A lot is being made of how dominant the NFC East has been this year, and it's true. Arguably the 3 best teams in football reside in the division, and the 4th best team (Skins) might be a Top 5 team in the NFC. The division is loaded with talent and every team looks like a legit playoff contender.
But this isn't just a one year thing. The 4 teams in NFC East have been incredibly succesful and competitive for a long time. These are the numbers for the 4 current teams in the division since 1983 (after the players' strike in '82).
Code:
NYG: 218-182-2, 6 Div Titles, 12 Playoff Apps (15-9 record), 4 Super Bowls (3-1 record)
PHI: 216-183-3, 6 Div Titles, 12 Playoff Apps (10-12 record), 1 Super Bowls (0-1 record)
DAL: 215-187-0, 8 Div Titles, 13 Playoff Apps (12-10 record), 3 Super Bowls (3-0 record)
WAS: 214-187-1, 5 Div Titles, 10 Playoff Apps (14-8 record), 3 Super Bowls (2-1 record)
In a span of 25 years, the difference between the best and worst team in that group record wise is 4.5 Games! Each team has won the division atleast 5 times and made the playoffs at least 10 times, that's simply amazing. Although the Eagles lost in their only Super Bowl appearance, the other 3 teams in the division have won atleast 2 times and appeared in it 3 times. That means over the past 25 years, one of these teams has appeared in 11 Super Bowls and won 8 of them!
I hate the rest of the division with a passion. The Skins, Cowboys, and Eagles are the top 3 teams I hate in the entire sport. But I think it's amazing how great the division and all 4 teams have been over the past 25 or so years. People are right when they talk about how great the division has been this year, but it's really not just this year. This division has been the most compettive and succesful division in sports over the last 25 years. And yes, I realize that the Arizona Cardinals were also members of the division until 2001, and yes they sucked as much as a sports team could possibly suck. But that doesn't take anything away from the other 4 teams and the NFC East. The NFC East has been a monster of a division for a long time.
