So what happened to rap?

Rap always gets shitted on for some reason more than any genre. There are plenty of positive and creative rappers but nobody cares about that they just want music that can make them dance or get them hype.

It helps to learn the lingos
A C-note means $100.
A crib means a house.
Nuttin means you are not doing nothing.
Yo, pay attention
And listen real closely how I break this slang shit down

Check it, my weed smoke is my lye
A ki of coke is supply
When I'm lifted, I'm high
With new clothes on, I'm fly
Cars is whips and sneakers is kicks
Money is chips, movies is flicks
Also, cribs is homes, jacks is pay phones
Cocaine is nose candy, cigarettes is bones
A radio is a box, a razor blade is a ox
Fat diamonds is rocks and jakes is cop
And if you got rubbed, you got stuck
You got shot, you got bucked
And if you got double-crossed, you got fucked
Your bankroll is your poke, a choke hold is a yoke
A kite is a note, a con is a okey doke
And if you got punched that mean you got snuffed
To clean is to buff, a bull scare is a strong bluff
I know you like the way I'm freakin' it
I talk with slang and I'm a never stop speakin' it

[Chorus: x2]
[Nas:] "Speak with criminal slang"
That's just the way that I talk, yo
[Nas:] "Vocabulary spills, I'm ill"

Yo, yo
A burglary is a jook, a woof's a crook
Mobb Deep already explained the meanin' of shook
If you caught a felony, you caught a F
If you got killed, you got left
If you got the dragon, you got bad breath
If you 730, that mean you crazy
Hit me on the hip means page me
Angel dust is sherm, if you got AIDS, you got the germ
If a chick gave you a disease, then you got burned
Max mean to relax, guns and pistols is gats
Condoms is hats, critters is cracks
The food you eat is your grub
A victim's a mark
A sweat box is a small club, your tick is your heart
Your apartment is your pad
Your old man is your dad
The studio is the lab and heated is mad
I know you like the way I'm freakin' it
I talk with slang and I'm a never stop speakin' it

[Chorus x2]

The iron horse is the train and champaign is bubbly
A deuce is a honey that's ugly
If your girl is fine, she's a dime
A suit is a fine, jewelry is shine
If you in love, that mean you blind
Genuine is real, a face card is a hundred dollar bill
A very hard, long stare is a grill
If you sneakin' to go see a girl, that mean you creepin'
Smilin' is cheesin', bleedin' is leakin'
Beggin is bummin, if you nuttin you comin
Takin' orders is sunnin', an ounce of coke is a onion
A hotel's a telly, a cell phone's a celly
Jealous is jelly, your food box is your belly
To guerrilla mean to use physical force
You took a L, you took a loss
To show off mean floss, uh
I know you like the way I'm freakin' it
I talk with slang and I'm a never stop speakin' it

[Chorus x2]

Yeah, yeah
One love to my big brother, Big Lee
Holdin' it down
Yeah, Flamboyant for life
Yeah yeah, Flamboyant for life

I like the beats to rap music but the language is too much for me. Is it really that hard to express yourself without using four letter words? Maybe try opening a dictionary sometime.

in bf4 hip-hop GAF tells you there's thousands of intelligent underground rap groups out there that you just have to put the slightest effort into fighting on the internet
which they themselves consider corny backpack rap that they would never listen to themselves

The south's garbage cash money and trap music ruined rap along with white people thinking Em is the best.

Not quite at all. If it wasn't for Master P, J Prince, Baby/Slim, and a few others that embrace the independent scene. Hip hop would pretty much be in a coma on a new york subway.

The south took hip hop to a whole different level beyond the normal ultra lyrical mafioso stuff the east coast was on and the gangsta rap g funk the west coast was on. The south made it cool to dance to hip hop again instead of bobbing your head in a corner trying to catch every dope rhyme. Even if you don't want to dance...there's lyrical artists in the south that can get down with any rapper up north and to the west.

South hatred in hip hop need to end :(

I would rather listen to Imagine Dragons or even maroon 5 then the crap rap songs being put by Lil Wayne, imSU and others.

Then go for it, music is a great experience especially when you can listen to what you enjoy without worrying about being judged.

I'm not a big fan of Wayne either, I listen to my share of "ignorant" rap though.

psst...he's a walking dictionary and a college thesis. You can't go wrong with Canibus.

I don't know why people keep saying Maklemore is great mainstream. He's shit compared to when he was an underground rapper.

been a while since we had an OP like this. i do love all the subtle racism.

listen to better artists, kiddo.

Rap always gets shitted on for some reason more than any genre.

I'll give you one guess.

I would rather listen to Imagine Dragons or even maroon 5 then the crap rap songs being put by Lil Wayne, imSU and others.

so why would you create a thread if you are unwilling to expand your own horizons?

oh, that's right...

When was the mainstream stuff about anything else anyways?

Every now and then you'll get an oddball like Macklemore, Matisyahu, or whoever, but typically a rap artist's career goes from bitching about being poor to bragging about being rich.

I guess 2Pac lamented the situation of black people and that's come up from time to time, but it's hard to take seriously when it's sandwiched between cars, money, girls and the clothes.

Aw man, you sold your soul.

It's not the only genre where mainstream is crowded by garbage, but I definitely think (personally, just an opinion) that a higher percentage of mainstream rap is pretty shit compared to the percentage of pop or rock that's pretty shitty.

Guys

Macklemore made Same Love.

Same Love.

The rest of your opinions don't matter.

Dude is a true pioneer of the rap game from now and years to come.

Macklemore for President.

lmao, hip-hop is killing it right now. How haven't you heard of Kendrick Lamar? Yeezus? Isaiah Rashad? Big KRIT? Chance the Rapper? Childish Gambino? J. Cole? Vince Staples? Shit, man, even Mac Miller dropped a great CD.

Isiah Rashad, Chance the Rapper, Mac Miller mainly talk about that stuff the OP mentioned.
