Wait....really? There has to be some kind of mechanic that makes the boss weak during a certain phase of the fight. Are they all just really dumb bullet sponges with one "one-shot" kill move you have to avoid?

No. The first actual boss goes down quickly of you know how to block his teleports and kill his oracles. It also utilizes a "relic" that has a cleanse for a debuff that kills you, a super to take down his shields, and allows you to melee. There are a lot of mechanics besides bullet sponge.

So, the bosses seem really similar:

bosses stand there and take a bazillion shots to the face
Bosses summon guys that kill you
Run around killing small guys that kill you then shoot boss in face

Repeat until successful.
Man, I wish they would have shown how their raids would work before release, before digital pre-order was available. Had I known that the end game of this FPS mirrored what I feel is the worst excess and design of MMO raids, I would have stayed away and saved myself the disappointment. *sigh* Guess I can write off Bungie's output for the next ten years.

Yeah. It's meant for people who sit on their couch playing videogames for hours on end.

...Wait a minute...
Lazy is the wrong word... but he got a point. You don't get good loot from doing nothing. Why should you deserve it? It takes dedication, team work, stamina and tactics. If you don't want to do it, then don't expect to get the best loot.

The best thing about raids is figuring out the different stages and creating tactics. In the beginning this will be exciting, but sooner or later the less dedicated people finds guides done by the "pioneers". And that's where we get the lazy from.

If there is, they haven't figured it out yet. They've wiped so many times, it's not even funny.

Anyone remember that you had to Level 1 to 3 months in classic World of Warcraft to maxlevel? And then you didnt even consider doing raids for another 2 to 4 months (dependent on willingness of own playtime and doing prereq normal Group dungeons. And THEN you had to gather 40 FORTY "Friends" to raid.

IN MY TIME! We would go to the blackrockdeeps (+ the famous escort quest) on a Sunday morning and get out in the evening!

1-3 months in vanilla WoW was considered short at the time and only seems long in retrospect. People also put up with it, not necessarily because they inherently enjoyed that part of the experience but because if you wanted to play a good MMO, what else were you going to do?

BRD had unofficial wings to it, if you spent all day in there, that was your own decision to do so.

epic loot isn't meant for the lazy.

You know you're talking to someone with MMO Stockholm Syndrome when people unwilling or unable to spent a protracted period of time with a video game are "lazy".

While that sounds good in theory, you still have realize the landscape of MMOs has changed. The hardcore are a very small minority now. They're the people who constantly get world firsts and top spots. Casuals make or break a MMO now. If you cannot cater to them your game will surely die if its big budget.

I feel like I've played a fair bit of Destiny in the first week, and I'm only level 14. These Raids just sound like ridiculously hardcore exercises. 3 hours? Yeah, I've got a full time job and responsibilities. I'd like to experience everything this game has to offer, but this just seems a bit overboard.

Couldn't you have a Raid just be an hour? Maybe once in a great while you unleash a 3 hour one, but the first one is 3 hours and requires level 26? A lot of the people playing this game will never finish it.

This isnt a fair statement, I work full time and have responsibilities as well.

I feel that anyone, at least here on GAF, complaining that you have to play this with friends needs to check out the GAF Destiny clan thread. You can have 50 new friends added to your friends list within about 10 minutes and start doing this challenge.

I for one applaud Bungie for taking a chance here and making these raids challenging. I have no issues at all with this requiring 6 friends to coordinate.

Imagine the feeling of success once you beat this...

I'm confused by all the bullet sponge people. Have you ever played an mmo and fought a high end boss?

The problem is these bosses are all, "oh shit, got hit almost dead, hide behind pillar"

There isn't even don't stand in the fire mechanics in this game it's so outdated. It's literally CoD multiplayer but in PvE: run and gun.

There's probably a trick to it but they've been getting destroyed by supplicants that do crazy damage by charging at them and exploding and some instakill lost in time shit for last 30 minutes or so.

That is interesting because I mostly keep seeing is bullet sponge this bullet sponge that.

How is that any different than what he said? There's no interesting boss phases to be accounted for, so each and every boss in each and every strike/raid is nothing more than a bullet sponge.

I'm stuck at level 23 so I can't do this shit. Why does Bungie have to do this bullshit to their players? You'd think that putting in hours and hours into this game would get you passed the mandatory level they give for these raids. So annoying.

Watching the stream, looks pretty fun!
I don't think I'll ever play it myself though. I'm lvl 20, grinding is boring and most of my friends are giving up on this game pretty fast. But I still enjoy the stream.

Yisssss!!!

Looking at the StreamerHouse stream, it looks like they need to successfully hit the boss X number of times with the relic. It doesn't look like player damage matters in this phase at all.

It can only be done once a week. IMO, it would be pretty disappointing if the main end game content could be finished in 1 hour. I'm assuming you've never played an MMO, 2-3+ hour raids are pretty normal.

Correct, I've never played an MMO. Bungie themselves have been quick to tell people Destiny is not an MMO.

The variety of the raid seems pretty good from the stream, all the stages seem to have good unique twists to them that can't be worked out by just reading the mission text, it requires a lot of teamwork (no way this raid would work with silent randoms, it would be totally impossible), I'm impressed.

But why is none of this variety in the rest of the game that I have to play over and over to get to 26? No bosses with stages or vulnerabilities, no stealth sections or platforming, when are those of us who don't want to play 6 hour raids with friends going to see content like this?

Lol at 6 people and no matchmaking. Also remember them saying it will take a couple of hours to get through. How the fuck do you coordinate 6 friends who have that much time free and get them all together consistently. I see a trade in in the near future.

Yeah I don't get why this stuff is only in the raids, it doesn't need to be :(

They should have really made the first 20 levels shine.

every boss in the game

Honest question: is there clan support in the game? I saw a "Destiny Clan" thread or somesuch so I guess if there is, it shouldn't be hard to coordinate with clan members to do raids?

It's happened for years, almost decades with 20 raids and 40 people raids on the PC this is no different.

Bahroo stream hasn't figured that out yet.

I actually just watched them take like 5% of his health in maybe 10 seconds before the first teleport, so it doesn't really look like his health is all that insane anyway. You just don't have any time to DPS in this phase once the teleporting starts, so you clearly need the shield super.

If you look at the Destiny app, on the second tab of your Guardian profile, you can see your Vault of Glass progression.
There it lists 2 tiers 4 boss each.

Just noticed that. Wow. They put all of their game content and length into the raids that only a few people will ever be able to do.

That is so stupid.

Thats wrong on so many levels. "Casuals" never make or break a game or a system. "Casuals" are the one you have to feed instant gratification over and over again. Wii was driven by casuals. They moved on to the next thing (mobile) WiiU is "dead"

on an MMO Level, Core and Hardcore Players are the ones who create a thriving community (if your game is good) They are the ones who have core or casual friends. Thats the rat-tail phenomen. If you cater to Casual userbase. You must feed them instant gratification on a constant basis.

(Hard)Core players are fine with a challenge and play the games for months on end. Their social circle that comes on every so often or only plays because their hardcore friends plays, is the foundation of a healthy MMO.

Without the core you dont have the thing that binds all the players together

From what I can tell from the stream, the tactics for the Atheron boss seems to be that when he comes out you do minimal damage to him until he teleports 3 of the party into an alternate dimension.

The three outside need to fight off adds to open up the portal so the other can escape the other dimension while the three inside needs to pick up a shield and kill the oracles in the alternate dimension so that they don't get DoT'd and die while waiting for the outside group to open the portal for them.

Once they are all outside they are able to use the shield on the boss in order to do damage to him.

Edit: Also looks like you still need to use the shield's cleanse ability to remove one of the DoT's you get from getting teleported.
