If you're actively selling people on your cinematic storytelling and talking it up to high heaven, then you sure as hell should provide something that's not as miserable, shallow, and incoherent as Destiny's story, world-building and characters.

I truly enjoy the gameplay and co-op, but come the fuck on. Lets not just start dismissing categories entirely because Destiny failed to deliver.
 
People are playing this game wrong. Enjoy yourself in PVP while slowly becoming better equipped for raids and strikes. Why is everyone saying the game just ends once you're done grinding? What's the rush? Did you all stop playing Halo 3 PVP once you completed the campaign? There's no grinding in Halo 3 PVP, just repetitive fun.

Well, I wonder if he's referring specifically back to the original Metroid or the series as a whole.

Because if it's the series, he's barking up the wrong tree. The Prime trilogy, in particular, had a story far more interesting and resonating than anything presented in Destiny.

Shit, I think a scanning mechanic (someone in the OT mocked this up) would solve most of the story complaints.

This is a pretty asinine statement. If you finished the story missions currently available, you'd know it doesn't have a definite 'end.' The Exo stranger even confirms as much in the closing cutscene. The universe will become fleshed out further in due time. It isn't like the content in the game currently is the final product. This month we're doing some favors for the Queen, I'd assume this will kick things back off.

How is he wrong? Super Metroid and Metroid are two different games. I'm not saying it's necessary to have a "thick and rich and buttery" story, but they kind of advertised that they did.
 
Is there a list of reviewers that spent extensive time playing this game before forming an opinion? I'd love to read a translation of the level 7 review. FWIW, I'm still grinding away and hoping to join a faction in the near future.

The sad part is that so many things in the game don't like a final product. When you pay 60$ for a game, you should be paying for something that for all intents and purposes is a final product. And anything added on later just makes it better.

Destiny is like an early access game that's way too early.

I don't like the PvP and don't want to touch it. Am I playing the game wrong? I just want to play the story.

I bought it for PVE. I have no interest in the PVP. Just got to 20 and not seeing much reason to stick with it right now.
 
While I do appreciate the "review the game for what it is, not what you want it to be" mentality, it is flawed, as a blanket statement.

Developer promises and intended game design should be taken into account.

Super Metroid is a really good example. There is a story and it gives you something to care about, but the story is mostly exposition and background. You know it's there and it's always in the back of your mind, but you don't get a payoff until the end. That would work with Destiny: hook players with a great exposition and then leave them alone for most of the playthrough.

He said Metroid though, not Super Metroid to be fair. I'd have had no fucking clue what was going on in Metroid. I'd also agree that few good games actually REQUIRE a good story, just like how few goof game require good graphics. It certainly helps though when a game is lacking in many other areas (such as interesting encounter design).

Take the story and set pieces out of the first Uncharted... then consider how good a game this would be, just endlessly fighting wave upon wave of identical enemy, with some sparse platforming that's basically impossible to fail. It'd be horrible. Then imagine you played each part of it countless times hoping for an item to drop...

The desire to explore compels you to continue in Metroid. There is highly intimate interaction with the environment. Destiny can't offer that.
 
Also, the problem with Destiny's story isn't just that it's sparse. It's that it's told so fucking poorly.

A limited story game can pass, sometimes. A game that has such an awful story with awful dialogue repeated in the same cut-and-paste awful story missions is a different story.

Halo 3's PvP is better with more balance and variety.

Maybe if they gave me crucible marks for playing Titanfall...

The voice acting in particular is surprisingly awful. I just got to Venus and am shocked by the delivery of some things. The parts where you hear the speaker talk during spaceflight really stood out, as did the acting by the female you run into. Good lord. And the ghost attempts at humour are terrible

I really haven't been in this thread but how is that nonsense? Have you played on hard? The game goes from enemies standing around you to enemies making plans to flank you. On hard I really couldnt count how many times I have been lured out of a spot by one enemy just to be flanked by tons of other guys. Its actually pretty impressive and I dont feel like I die because of some bullshit, I just got outsmarted

What a terrible argument. Not only does metroid games have stories but tells them completely in the background through the environmental text. If a game like destiny is actively trying to tell you a story then yes it should be good.

So well over 30 hours of content, 6 strikes, a raid, PvP that has basically unlimited replayability, free story content adding new gear, missions, game modes, bounties, etc. coming in the next week, with even more free stuff being added in October isn't enough to justify a $60 purchase?

Just how much content do you expect there to be in a game? They've stated -- from the beginning -- their intentions with the title.

You review what ships because that's what people are buying - not some future potential. Content additions later are why things like re-reviews or Polygon's updates exist.

You highlight a major issue with how people market games today.

Content =/= worth.

Also, I would hesitate to call replaying the same content over again for 30 hours as 30 hours of content.

I also just realized you included things that as-of-yet are not playable as content. You pay for what's on the disc. Not for future maybe/ifs/someday content.

This shit doesn't matter, like at all. You put a product on store shelves, whatever's on the disc should get reviewed.

I'd really love to know what this new content entails. If its decent that could certainly change my opinion on this game's legs.

It seems to me that almost everyone was going for that SHOCK low score on a big game. It's almost like a push back for being PR forwarding drones most see games journalists as.

Everyone shit on them for giving Last of Us 10's for a great story and OK gameplay... now we have an amazing game with a kinda bad story side.

To me it should be ranked:

GAMEPLAY >>> ART > GRAPHICS > STORY

Interactive movies are fine, but I really don't understand giving a game a 6/10 because it is not an interactive movie.

If TLOU had a 4 hr story mode, even if it was still great people wouldnt say it was worth $60, and ^ TLOU ok gameplay? lol
 
I'd feel better about the potential of new stuff being added to the game if they weren't already selling two expansion packs. I don't regret buying the game, I had fun and got my moneys worth out of it but it is lacking in long term appeal right now.

The problem with your statement is that The Last Of Us has fantastic gameplay, single and multi.

Uncharted 2 is far ahead of Destiny in terms of designing engaging encounters even without the set pieces. Destiny's failings are at a much more core level. It's frustrating that the narrative execution is getting the brunt of the criticism. With how solid the mechanics are, Destiny could've been great even if it was simply a progression of fun, unique, well presented moments. The real problem is that it has very few moments. The first mission isn't different than the middle, which isn't different than the end, which isn't much different than the Strikes. Layering an amazing story on top of Destiny wouldn't even begin to fix its problems.

You can't use a blanket template for attributes for like that - it totally depends on how all of those compliment each other and result in an overall quality experience.

Apparently the Grimoire stuff was added really close to release and putting it in the app/site was the only way it could realistically be included at all.

But yeah, I really hope they add some way to view them in-game.

Wow, so it's basically a Wikipedia written for the game? Yeah...not going to bother. Most games would have that stuff told in-game through books, artifacts, or NPC dialogue and conversation trees.

Also, I'll amend my statement to say content alone =/= worth. You need content, but you need good content.

I'll spare the rant of what's wrong with Destiny's content, for if you've been in this thread for more than 10 minutes or read any of the reviews, you've probably already heard them.

I find it hard to trust IGN when they've just had an entire month of Destiny exclusive coverage in July.

I'm expecting something like 8.9/10 (just like Game Informer who also had a Destiny cover story & month long exclusive in January). They're not going to bite the hand that feeds them and risk losing future exclusives.
