Saros | Review Thread

will I like this if I didn't like Returnal? is more of the same basically?
Why didnt you liked returnal is the question here. If you didnt liked it because it was too punishing or didnt had any meaningful run to run progression or you just didnt liked the gameplay.

Depends, what didn't you like about Returnal?

I'd say SAROS is far more accessible than Returnal. The gunplay and overall gameplay loop is better here. I don't see another action game topping SAROS this year imo

yeah mostly the gameplay loop.. it got repetetive fast and the difficulty kind of killed it, dying and having to go through it again

Well the gameplay was king in returnal and its the same amazing gameplay here, but you can customize your difficulty a lot more. Also getting progression after every death and you dont have to restart the game from the beginning everytime you die, because there is a biome selection now after you beat the boss

The most frustrating part of Returnal/Saros is that watching clips on youtube doesn't do it justice. Housemarque absolutely nails player movement and gunplay in a way that is wholly unique. So many people don't give it a fair chance

God this game is incredible. Biome 4 is kicking my ass. The game looks and runs so good on PS5 pro. The amount of particles on screen sometimes are unreal and it looks so crisp

There was a day 1 update that balanced the difficulty and i must say its not an easy game at all. Biome 4 started to kick my ass, i dont use the carcosan modifier so im playing on "balanced". Seems like a perfect difficulty. I can only imagine how fucking hard this game can be with negative modifiers or even turning off the armor matrix

Still no OT??? Someone needs to be banned or something at this point...... Anyways, incredible looking/sounding/feeling game and the concerns about being too easy are a non-issue imo.

Hearing that you needed to reach biome 4 to start having your ass kicked is not exactly the injection of hope i was hoping for but still better than nothing i guess :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Question about Lucenite and the skill tree -

I have maxed out everything until the skill you cannot unlock until you beat the first boss. Since everything is unlocked, is the Lucenite I pick up until first boss is defeated pointless?

Why would it be? it is saved and you can use it later

Oh i died earlier aswell, but i really felt the difficulty here
I just hope you are a much better tps player than me, a roguelite should feel hard from the beginning, that's how you valorize the metaprogression or getting a broken run once in a while.

Oh, so it saves after a run if you don't use it. For some reason I was thinking it disappeared. No idea why as I have used carry over after runs. Guess I just have a moment this morning. Thanks for the answer.

How are you playing it already? Do you live in the future?

I really shouldn't get another game since I don't have much time to play, but I think the FOMO is gonna do me in on this one. I loved Returnal, so I'm probably gonna break down and get this tomorrow.

Ugh do I really want to pay an extra $10 just to play it 12 hours early?

…kinda yeah

It releases in 7 hours, dont. Well maybe its 12 for you, its midnight release
Yeah, 13 hours from now. The only reason I'd get it is because I have a slightly lighter day of work today, compared to the rest of the week.

It feels great in the hands, which doesn't come across easily in videos.

A foil is something like Red Dead Redemption 2, which looks phenomenal in videos in terms of smooth, realistic animation, but feels sluggish to actually play.

If you want a challenge you should start at the beginning of the most recently finished biome.

If you start right from the beginning you will become OP in the later Biomes.

Sounds exactly the same as Returnal if you take your time to level up each run you can destroy the final bosses.

I think Players that tried to Skip the first couple Biomes had a real rough time in Returnal.

But that's not how you play a freakin roguelike where starting over from biome 1 is the norm and you should still have a challenge...

Also It should not be a given to have a killer build just because you start from biome one, most times you should have an average run with the occasional busted one, like most roguelikes.

Well i'm gonna play the game tomorrow so it's useless to wonder if the game is too easy or unbalanced, hopefully the returnal whiners didnt ruined yet another developer for the sake of making a game for everyone instead of sticking to their guns.

There is something you unlock after a bit in game that lets you modify the game to make it harder/easier with various parameters. Such as enemies doing more damage to you, or you can't obtain Halycon (rare upgrade material), etc.

In Returnal my first run I beat the first 3 bosses in a row, and then when I died in the 4th area it took me dozens of hours to get a good run again lol.

Here I can safely say the first 3 bosses are cake compared to Returnal bosses, but also nowhere near as epic due to the soundtrack.

The OST overall is a major misstep.

I also think Saros is not delivering as impactful of a story as Returnal so far. I hope it picks itself up soon.

Waiting for some more impressions from this thread. Returnal was great this feels like a spiritual successor that I hope innovates on the gameplay front (while I haven't watched a ton on content so not speaking from a position of knowledge here).

Finished the first area and got to the second boss last night. The haptics and sound design are sublime. Reprogramming your brain to dodge into blue bullets took me longer than I thought it would. I kind of feel like there is something off about player feedback when being in hit or something along those lines as I find myself confused as to why I'm taking damage in certain encounters. I'm not really sure how I feel about the meta progression or the the new structure of the game. I'm having a really good time overall though.

I'm about 45 minutes in, and the game crashed. I can't even close the game manually. My PS5 is locked up.

I'd say other than that, the game seems awesome. But this is pretty annoying.

Coming in as a music producer/engineer, the sound design is absolutely next level. Awesome work with PS and HM on that. I will say though that when enemies spawn, the audio does seem like their noises come from above when the enemies are actually in front of me. I think that's my only nitpick on that. Just might be something to get use to.

FWIW I didn't experience that in the 1.5 hours I played. Maybe a reinstall might help?

Seems like it was just a freak glitch. After a restart, it's working fine.

Yes sadly the OST is pretty forgettable. I dont even remember any good boss music in this game so far, its just okay. Also i agree that the story and mistery of returnal was much better. This is still a fucking amazing video game tho. Returnal was the first so its just special :)

I never use difficulty modifiers in roguelikes unless it is required to level up some stuff like on hades 2, so i hope the default challenge is enough or they offer real awards for using the modifiers.

But you beating the first 3 bosses of returnal in your first run tells me that you are far more skilled than me, thank god because your posts about beating bosses in oros were giving me multiple ulcers :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I mean I just beat boss 4 in less than 30 seconds and took one hit. I did an ult on it randomly and it killed its entire health bar….

Beat and loved Returnal. Died towards the end of first biome. Restarted and upgraded character. Got to the boss and beat him first try but we were both like one shot. I would have had to restart again but had opened a shortcut. It's hard to tell with all the tools available to you, upgrades, ability to increase chances by fully exploring what the difficulty will be. If there is a gradual increase in difficulty with spikes I think difficulty will be fine. Returnal more challenging at the start but honestly I found it a little overturned. I think the approach here is fair considering how many people bumped off returnal before even beating the first boss. Here the challenge is there but you don't feel like you're about to waste another hour for nothing if you die

I'm gonna do what the guy above said. Keep starting from current biome unless I'm getting crushed an obnoxious amount of times. I eventually do want to explore areas I couldn't get to before but don't want to make the game easier too soon

Can i ask you a question?

I"m pretty sure that most of my damage taken in returnal was because of falling damage or getting hit trying to catch the disappearing money from enemies (such a bullshit way to make things harder btw), do you feel like soros locations have the same amoung of voids where you can fall while fighting and does it still have the bullshit money disappearing mechanic?

I swear enemies were cute puppies compared to the amount of damage i took from falling or enviromental lasers and traps...
