I can't believe I've been playing this game an insane number of hours since it was released and just now realized that you can get extra ascendant materials by upping the difficulty on the daily heroic mission. I've been doing them on the default difficulty most days and wondering why my reward was a big fat nothing.

How do you up the difficulty?

I think it's worth pointing out that if a player isn't using a guide and trying to maximize how to do everything the best and getting screwed over because of it, the loot system is probably in pretty poor shape.

Like...are people really supposed to know the public event schedule and where to show up? It feels like these are meant to be organic encounters you just come across, not some harsh mechanical schedule to follow up on.

And why do the majority of the vendors use crucible marks? The PvE/P split is pretty heavily leaned in one direction from that and the HORRENDOUS value from doing the strike playlist.

I read the guys and even told people to read your guides. While people were farming venus I was telling others how to join factions and make the most of it.

If you get a weapon, chest, and gauntlet piece - how many marks have you spent? A weapon alone is 150. Chest, legs, and arms are each 65. You're gonna be hurting climbing that mountain for a while unless you raise rep in a faction AND across both the crucible and vanguard vendors. I wouldn't mind it, but again - seeing people get exotics just for showing up makes that grind feel worse than it even is.

All but one of my legendary drops have been useful. Everything else has been either a dupe (as in, armor piece not better than one I already have) or unusable by main class. I could've bought items from Xur, but spending strange coins to replace items I've already spent marks on is redundant and wasteful.

I mean... its just a bad system. Its fixable, but its bad. And you only need to get lucky one time to really get yourself over the level 26 hump. I could absolutely drop the 12 remaining ascendant shards to get my legendary chest piece maxed out - but I shouldn't be essentially forced into that pricey predicament.

Buying the weapon is the mistake as weapons don't add Light and Light is the only form of progression. That's why armor is Rank 2 while Weapons are Rank 3. The game is trying to push you into buying your Armor first as that plays a larger role in completing content.

When you're below the recommended level for the content, your effectiveness against enemies is lower. To help illustrate, here's a video that Datto made after the beta. Pause it right where I've linked and you can see that fighting higher level enemies cuts your damage production by a set percentage. This makes your light level (thus your armor) more important that your your weapon until you reach the appropriate level for the content.

holy fuck first off don't spend marks on weapons. that's a luxury mark expenditure. weapons never have light. I did put this in the guide. :/ you can also get legendary weapons as vanguard rank rewards. For the moment, my primary weapon is a rare and I'm okay with that. My rocket launcher is a bit of another story.

Dude welcome to my world in any game with loot rolls. I never get shit. I'm trying to tell you DESTINY IS BETTER at counteracting this issue than most loot games. And by the way, one day, you might get an exotic roll you know. anyone can get lucky. Are you gonna feel like you can't enjoy it because it might be making the grind feel worse for everyone else present.

"All but one of my legendary drops have been useful."

I have had no legendary drops. or exotic drops. zero. I'm going to hit 27 or come ludicrously close tonight, without any rng. I'll prove it.

This is a good point. Yeah, you can make the end game work... sorta... but it's a pretty rigid system.

I love the fusion rifle.

Hey, we need two guys for the last raid boss. Any level 27+ stuck on that can come join us. We have gotten close to killing him a few times.

The weekly strike got you 3? That'd be 5 probably from pvp theyn I guess. So you were 5 away...

Yeah, that was why I was farming. I was hoping I'd get those last 5 coins from the cave. 5 coins from PvP took me a week or so, so I wasn't counting on that one.

Sadly, public events are the most likely roll for coins and ascendant materials both that you can do on a regular basis.

I didn't know you could predict public events like that, I'll check this out. Thanks!

1) Did you buy that legendary helmet? ;_; Helms are way more marks than any other armor piece. nooooo. Because you had the helmet you'd also have to have replaced the piece you had already upgraded nooooo argh.

Ugh, you're right! I didn't see that helms are worth more marks. When I made the purchase I was looking for which piece gave me the most light compared to my current gear, and my current helm had the least light. I should have checked the price.

2) So you'd done two upgrades to each legendary. You're right. ONE MORE UPGRADE puts you at 26! ;_; I'm so sorry. So all of the remaining possible upgrades needed shards, eh? Definitely the route you can do soonest. how many are you missing? I can only recommend public events for them.

At the higher levels, content like the Daily Heroic Story gives you a guarantee of most ascendant materials.

I needed 3 more shards, and I couldn't figure out how to get my hands on them. I did that "Defend the Warsat" event at least 6 times throughout the course of the farm and managed to get one extra, but the public events weren't exactly handing them out like candy.

I've been doing the daily heroic story every day, (and all of the bounties) that's where I got my three.

3) How many motes of light did you have? A random roll for the chest piece, one in 3 shot you'd have WAY exceeded 26. Such better than cave farming ;_;

I've got 19 motes of light, which is 4 short for a Xur exotic engram. What are the best ways to get those?

So right now, you're sitting at like, what, how many marks of each vendor?

Right now I've got 140 Vanguard Marks (currently grinding out Vanguard rep daily via bounties) and 4 Crucible marks.

At this point, though, the ship has sailed. I'm doing the raid this coming weekend, (at this point I can just get the crucible marks the second they reset and buy the greaves) but I'm still really bummed that I wasn't able to share the first experience with my friends. Here's to hoping I'll be raid-ready in time for the next tier.

I'd certainly hope so, otherwise they totally screwed the pooch.

...I believe Dax was being sarcastic, it's pretty obvious that you're meant to level up the faction and buy the gear you want. The drops are just there for RNG goodness/badness and to dismantle to upgrade the faction gear you bought.

I think people are too focused on the rush to level up to realize they can just work on buying the gear they want tailored to them and upgrade it. Hell, I'm even guilty of it, spent some shards when I shouldn't have.

When you're gaining reps and marks, you're earning towards gear with stats you know and want. When you're farming, you're gambling. My biggest complaint about this is that the 3 other factions don't take PvE/Vanguard marks. Strikes need a mark giving boost as well.

Just need that helm, which I will likely get with 60 more marks, to complete this current suit. Then ill work on the various armor sets.

i love this game, but like people have said this is basically diablo 3 at launch. the question here is do you think bungie can pull a blizzard (jesus) patch?

also the story really killed me, i love the foundation the whole good vs evil....but yeah you know the rest.

d3 started off so much worse

I wonder if Bungie's intention was for players to focus on buying their gear and not relying on the drops.

I'd certainly hope so, otherwise they totally screwed the pooch.

"We want every piece of gear to have an epic story behind it about how the player found it."

Not sure if grinding bounties and shooting at a level 5 cave is all that epic but those are my stories so far.

Just finished the raid a second time with my level 25 warlock. I was in the tower with my hunter and they asked me if I could help and I basically coached everybody to do their job and I got a free chatterbox and atheon's epilogue for helping them :)

It's diablo 3 at launch without the auction house and yet people still have the best gear there is after 2 weeks.

(meh, i never spent on a weapon but 65 65 65 120 for equipment makes the point. i've said it before but destiny could at least do players the favor of allowing them to keep and accumulate marks pre-20)

@bolded, but how?

Like, I'm really trying to think of a big name loot game that does this worse than Destiny - especially one that gates based on loot.

Anyone want to do the Raid? Helping a level 25 complete it, but there's 3 level 28's here who have completed it and can help you.

Forgot about that quote. Nothing epic about loot drops whatsoever

d3 started off so much worse

to me its about even, on one hand d3 had a beginning, middle, and an end to the story(still sorta garbage though). it also trading, auction house, and 4 player party but i love destiny's base gameplay.

the problem with this game is that it decided to copy a plethora of online rpgs systems but without any of the improvements that has come from years of exposure to them.

Because most loot games don't have ANY way to get best-tier items without RNG
Best example is Vanilla Borderlands 2

Lol, yeah. I'm just thinking that if they meant to do it this way, it'd be a poor design decision, but if they wanted it to be any other way, they're just incompetent :P

You know what the shittiest part is to me?

You should have just gone in with your friends :'( I get that you feel like you'd have been stomped and I'm sure you would've had a hell of a time, but it wasn't worth not GOING. And if it was them saying you couldn't enter with them I think that's kind of crappy too. Like, stick with your bros. I don't know. You could have found a legendary inside in the first 30 minutes. Argh. I don't man. More than anything I feel bad for you. some sliightly different choices or approaches to last-minute farming would have gotten you there, and you could've gone in without getting there anyway. :( *sigh* glad you're not giving up that easily at least!
