What's your guys' opinion on the gtx 980? I'm running 670 sli and I'm thinking about upgrading to the 980. I'm also interested in upgrading my 2500k to another cpu but not sure which.

i5-4690k if you're not looking to break bank, and is more than enough. i7-3790k if you're looking to go way overboard.

Hey guys, looking back at my post I figured it was a bit too convoluted so I'll make things a little clearer; here's my original post. Here's the PC I'm about the order and build;

Potential PC
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII Ranger
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz
GPU: N/A (GTX 970 at a later date)
SSD: Crucial MX100 256 GB
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750W
RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB 2133MHz
Optical: LG GH24NSB0 DVD Drive
Case: CoolerMaster Force 500
CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H60 2013
HDD: N/A (WD 3TB at a later date)
Current Price: £776

Question 1: Will the chosen Power Supply be able to handle the i7-4790K and 2 x GTX 970's?

Question 2: What speeds could I potentially overclock my i7-4790K with the Corsair watercooler?

Any help will be appreciated.

Guys I have some questions;

- What are some normal temperatures? My CPU is running at around 36-39 C, GPU around 28-32 C. My temps have gone up recently on my new build, the CPU used to set at a cool 32-33. I need to do a good cleaning but I'm starting to fear maybe the heatsink could be coming loose a little? Should I be worried about temperatures climbing like that and at what point should I be?

- On to cleaning, I could sure use some tips for this. I use compressed air and typically blow everything out really well, two or three times a month, should I do this more?

- Also some general system software cleaning tips wouldn't hurt :)

- Lastly, I have PUP.trovi that I accidentally installed from some shitty freeware :( I know I know, stupid, but heres the thing. Its dug into chrom, I can't get rid of it. malwarebytes and adwcleaner won't seem to get rid of it completely. Do I need to completely uninstall chrom, then run my cleaners and reinstall?

Thanks guys!

Specs:

1. Although the GTX 970s have been listed to use around 150W, id take these as averages, even at 200W though the PSU would be fine.

2. Probably the same as OCin with a Hyper 212 Evo or slightly better specced Air cooler for less money and less noise.

2133Mhz is overkill. 1600Mhz CL9 is good enough.
Motherboard overkill, unless you want a specific feature.

3TB Hitachi 7200rpm is a good HDD to buy.

This might be a stupid question but it's something I've only just realised, I'll need to plug my PC in through an extension lead. Are there any problems this could potentially cause not having it going straight into the wall outlet? Should I be looking for a certain type of lead?

Thanks for the advice. As far as the psu, I was just thinking if I upgraded my gpu and it required more juice to run it or something. Like I said, I'm not very good at this. Nice to know I shouldn't need a new one though!

The new GPUs of Nvidia are very power efficient and although I don't know the numbers likely require less, also switching to an Intel CPU also requires less power. So if you have a good power supply it is perfectly fine to keep it.

I don't think so, but there are people using surge protectors as some power supplies don't work nicely in case things go wrong.

Nope, will be fine. I run mine off a 6 way extension socket.

Re: GTX 970 - That's good to know, thanks.

Re: Overclock - I don't know what speeds I could get at all, I've been out of the know in regards to PC's for a while, only just getting back into it so I'm oblivious to what kind of speeds I can expect to reach, I just know that it's almost always worth overclocking.

Re: RAM speed - I'm fine with it being overkill, or will that be detrimental to overall performance of my PC?, I'm fine with being a bit beefier than what I'm currently needing as I won't be upgrading this PC yearly, this will be lasting be 4-5 years or so and I will be gaming on it too.

re: motherboard - It seems a really good board, and like above I'm going to be keeping this PC for a number of years so I'd rather spend good money on all the components and have it last.

re: HDD - I'll check it out, thanks.

Ok but paying more for a board doesnt mean itll last longer.

On the CPU OC, i didnt state a speed since it depends on the CPU lottery and your cooling/ambients. But for a Hyper 212 Evo id expect around 4.3Ghz. The limiting factor becomes the thermal paste between the die and CPU heatspreader, and no amount of cooling can make this better, only option is to delid the CPU and use something like Coolaboratory Liquid Pro so get the best contact possible and reduce the die to heatspreader distance.

Ram speed has a sweet spot of around 1866mhz cas 10, don't break the bank on ram as it is negligible difference in literally any real world application. For gaming there is maybe 1-3fps in it, video editing would be more in line for a performance impact.

The higher RAM speed will not be detrimental to the speed of your PC, but it won't give any benefit now or in the future either. If the price difference is low go for it I guess.

Oh I didn't mean to imply I specifically choose the higher priced motherboard thinking it would last the longest, but it did come with a lot of features on the board that I liked and I did need one at least that was SLI capable, plenty of USB 3.0 slots, plenty of RAM support so with all the other benefits it advertises is just a little bonus.

As per the CPU overclock, I have some thermal paste left-over so I'll replace the factory-given paste that comes with the cooler, so I'll do that and test it out afterwards. Would a 4.2GHz overclock be beneficial?

RAM Speed, I will be doing some video editing too and using Visual Studio, Maya and other stuff later in the year and in the future but the price is barely negligible for me so it doesn't bother me.

Yeah, noise is predominantly the reason I want to go back. I'm on an H100. I suppose I could try getting the Quiet Edition fans, but that'd effect cooling ability.

I've been wanting to pick up the Noctua D14 or D15.

Pick up a non-AIO water cooling kit. Much quieter pumps (with rubber damping mounts), better block etc. Then run the fans at super lazy speeds and have the whole thing be dead quiet.

I run the EK L120 from H80i and the pumps worse =( Already RMAd it and both start off silent and smooth then start to make a noise like a buzz. XSPC kits could be a better option but the bay res is not ideal at all. Plus the extra cost. Air cooling is still better for this.

Have a look at the Z97 Pro and see what features it doesn't have that you need conpared to the board you picked.

Search CPU delidding, limiting factor is not the shipped paste but the paste Intel uses between the CPU die and heatspreader. 4.2Ghz should be garunteed, will give some boost to that minimum frame rate and reduce judder in some cases. And of course will help in all the CPU heavy tasks you look to do as well. Pushing past 4.4-4.5Ghz is where it gets tricky. You need very good cooling and realistically to delid too.

Edit
Just saw the price for the Maximus board, surprised it's so cheap, it's fine to go with that. Ideally a board for your rig would be in the. £100-120 range so it's fine.

As someone who has no knowledge of how to build PCs at all, what would be a good option for a pre-built gaming PC? Something I could play games like Skyrim on at ultra settings as well as upcoming games like GTA and MGS.

I've had a look at delidding, certainly not something I'm comfortable with, it's much more intense than lapping and even that I wasn't comfortable with, I think I'll just stick to using good quality thermal paste for now and think about delidding in the future.

Thanks for all the help! Appreciate it.

Recently moved my PC into the living room. What type of KB/M do people use?

I just ran out and bought a Logitech MK520 because it was relatively cheap, but it seems to have some delay or lagging every now and then.

Use the USB extender it comes with, I have this combo and even play BF3 with it. I can even play in another room with stream streaming without an issue. It's around 8-9m distance!
I had similar issues when using the Bluetooth dongle directly in the rear of the PC.

Jesus christ GFWL is a huge pile of shit.

Install Dirt 3, install GFWL client. Log in, choose option to remember my user/PW, enter CD key, GFWL must update. Okay, update, game no longer boots. Try again twice, works for some reason, have to re-enter user/pass. Try to sign in, get error code -- click on "more help", opens a browser window with a "page not found" from microsoft. Boot it again, has forgotten credentials again, sign in, re-enter CD key.

Was that a D5 pump kit? Neither EK nor XSPC actually make those pumps. I wouldn't go bay res. It definitely costs more, but if you can afford it the noise/performance benefits are awesome.

Hi everyone, the time has come when I'm finally in a position to afford an upgrade.

Current Specs: C2D E6850 / 4GB RAM / Foxconn P35A / 8800GT baby! / Corsair HX520 / ATX / Seagate 2TB + 1TB
Budget: around 1000$ (I'm from Poland).
Main Use: 5 for Gaming and general usage; 2 for Emulation (PS2/Wii).
Monitor Resolution: 1080p, not buying anything new for a long time.
Run well list: Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and multiplatform games. 60fps is enough.
Reused parts?: Just the 2TB HDD, I will be selling the old PC.
Overclocking?: Yes!

Sa far I came up with the parts below:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($224.73 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($28.66 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($135.99 @ NCIX US)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($166.98 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($109.99 @ Micro Center)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card ($369.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($48.98 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: Corsair CSM 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $1150.31

I'm mostly looking to cut down the costs, 1150$ is a little too expensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi pc gaf, is there any logic in wanting to go from AIO water cooling back to air?

Some pumps can get really loud, louder than a good air cooling.
That's one reason.

Air cooling is good, and can perform at or above the level of AIO water-coolers. Your other option is to go whole hog custom water cooling.

Good quality parts can be just dead quiet. I have my CPU and GPU in a loop with a D5 pump and Cougar fans set at 40% speed. It's amazing how quiet it is.

There's not a whole lot of room to cut things down unless you want to lose substantial performance or the ability to overclock. You could hold off on the SSD for now, that would really be the only way I can see to drop prices in the short-term at least. If you're set on getting the SSD immediately, I'd try to find a way to come up with the extra $150. You could opt for one of the cheaper 970's, that would save you about $30.

Of course my 290 would die right after I go to the nVidia event.
Lol...

It got jealous and decided to leave you. :p

GAF, I have a bit of a dilemma. I want to build a media server with an eye of upgrading it to a gaming PC in the future. I have an PS4 and XB1, so I'm willing to wait a few years on an upper middle class gaming PC. I'll never have a proper desk space (tight condo city living), so the the box will be tucked away sight unseen. That also means I will exclusively play on a tv, which is only 1080p right now (although I may upgrade to 4k in the future).

Any advice on creating a media server with an eye for a gaming PC in the future? The case and the PSW are the only two things I know I can buy now that will be helpful in the future.

Budget: $500 .
Main Use: Media server, may upgrade to a gaming PC in the future..
Monitor Resolution: 1080p tv, my upgrade to a 4K in the future.

Reused parts?: Nope, but I do have a full cope of win 7.
Overclocking?: No

I've decided to do it, I've bought a Zotac GTX 970.

Girlfriend won't be happy!

I'll give one of my GTX 580's to a friend as a wedding gift (weird one I know!) and sell the better condition one.

I'm running it with a 2600K and 8 GB of RAM.

Let's hope my dual monitors don't catch fire.

Custom water cooling is kinda the final frontier and what I'll eventually get to once I start my completely new build next spring. For my existing build that I've had since 2012 I think an air cooler will do for now, just to dampen the sound some from the AIO I currently use.

Of course if you guys wanna recommend a kit, I'll definitely keep it in mind for when I eventually get to starting this terrifying project.

If you're gonna go all out, just do your own custom setup. The kits do some things right and other things not quite right. They're great value, but not a perfect setup.

Hey PC Gaf, Building my first rig in 2 months or so after joining the dark side / master race a few years back. A complete novice so any recommendations and feedback regarding my potential build would be much appreciated:

Your Current Specs: - Completely New
Budget: $1100, US
Main Use: Gaming
Monitor Resolution: 1920 x 1080
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Current games - Titanfall, Diablo 3, Ultra Street Fighter 4. Upcoming releases - Dragon Age Inquisition, Witcher 3, MGSV. 1080 / 60 at medium / high settings but would accept 1080 / 30 or a reduction in resolution if necessary
Looking to reuse any parts? - No

If at all possible I'd really try to budget in the $330 GTX 970. It will blow away the 760, and be much more future proof. Also, you listed your CPU cooler twice but didn't list the motherboard.

Anyone here have any experience with the Enthoo Primo? Is it possible to add casters to the bottom?

I am looking for a case for my next build and as much as I really, really want that CaseLabs ST10 that's an extra $600+ after I add in the case, accessories and additional water cooling parts needed for a case of that size.

The Enthoo Primo gets me the price range I want but I really need a case with casters on it.

I would check out the Little Devil V8, too. $300, excellent build quality, and all the water cooling capacity you could possibly need.

Anyone ever hear of a PC working incorrectly some of the time when connected to a TV but not to a monitor?

Reinstalled windows 7 on my old PC and it rarely hit post and often just looped over and over again without shooting me and indications why.
Today I decided to troubleshoot it some more and it's working perfectly. Only change is that I'm now using a monitor and not my TV.

Currently running memtest to check for errors and will continue looking at things but I'm a little confused by this.

What would be a decent price to sell a used evga gtx 670 ftw that has a stable overclock ~1300MHz? It's in great condition. I'm seeing $150-185 on ebay but the prices are everywhere.

Also ordered an nzxt phantom 410, hope I like it, mixed reviews.

Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Metro Redux, Battlefield 4. Watch Dogs (unoptimized however).

Good choices but yeah, Watch Dogs should really not be recommended (It's mostly fine at 30fps, but this should be out of the question with these cards).

Witcher 2 is still pretty and the infamous Ubersampling setting can finally be achieved. Far Cry 3 can also look great at times... Both are cheap by now.
