I just installed a 3570k in my system and I'm getting idle readings of around 45 - 50c, is this dangerously high? I'm using the stock cooler and it doesn't really wiggle or anything.

I installed the cooler sideways instead of normally if that matters.

Any suggestions for 'eye candy' games? Any genre will do.
Metro Last Light Redux, Watch Dogs, or Titanfall for already released 2014 games. Battlefield 4, Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, or Crysis 3 for 2013 games.

And look forward to Far Cry 4 and Witcher 3 coming in the near future which will surely look amazing. You might also get something out of the upcoming Shadow of Mordor, Dragon Age Inquisition, Assassins Creed Unity, Ryse: Son of Rome, and The Crew.

Good choices but yeah, Watch Dogs should really not be recommended (It's mostly fine at 30fps, but this should be out of the question with these cards).

Witcher 2 is still pretty and the infamous Ubersampling setting can finally be achieved. Far Cry 3 can also look great at times... Both are cheap by now.

Oh I know it doesn't run as well as it should, but it can look very pretty which is why I went ahead and recommended it.

Anyone ever hear of a PC working incorrectly some of the time when connected to a TV but not to a monitor?

Reinstalled windows 7 on my old PC and it rarely hit post and often just looped over and over again without shooting me and indications why.
Today I decided to troubleshoot it some more and it's working perfectly. Only change is that I'm now using a monitor and not my TV.

Currently running memtest to check for errors and will continue looking at things but I'm a little confused by this.
Cable? Nudged around?
What would be a decent price to sell a used evga gtx 670 ftw that has a stable overclock ~1300MHz? It's in great condition. I'm seeing $150-185 on ebay but the prices are everywhere.

Also ordered an nzxt phantom 410, hope I like it, mixed reviews.
Depenbds where you are selling it I'd look about $180 shipped

Nah it's probably fine if load temps are <75C

Custom water cooling is kinda the final frontier and what I'll eventually get to once I start my completely new build next spring. For my existing build that I've had since 2012 I think an air cooler will do for now, just to dampen the sound some from the AIO I currently use.

Of course if you guys wanna recommend a kit, I'll definitely keep it in mind for when I eventually get to starting this terrifying project.

I think the XSPC kits and EK kits are both very good. You can save a ton of money if you don't mind starting out stuck with just one brand. I started out with an XSPC kit and have since added some different stuff like an EK block and better (Monsoon) fittings. Also of course depends on your case and the layout you want. I always refer to the case specific threads at Overclock.net to see what other people are doing.

Anyone here have any experience with the Enthoo Primo? Is it possible to add casters to the bottom?

I am looking for a case for my next build and as much as I really, really want that CaseLabs ST10 that's an extra $600+ after I add in the case, accessories and additional water cooling parts needed for a case of that size.

The Enthoo Primo gets me the price range I want but I really need a case with casters on it.

It's known to be an outstanding case. There are a lot of videos about it on Youtube.

You should also go to Overclock.net and ask in the Enthoo case owners thread here:

Hi PC GAF.

I recently received a promotion at work, and with my PC being about 6 years old I figured it’s time to build a new one. Conveniently, this coincides perfectly with the new WoW expansion coming in November. With that being said, I will primarily be using this PC for World of Warcraft. I aim to get back into high-end raiding and am wondering if the build below is sufficient. I've heard WoW is much more CPU intensive than other games so I’m wondering if I should bump up the CPU to something better? And if so what would that be exactly? Other than that if anyone could let me know if everything listed below fits together correctly I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank You!

Budget: $1500ish

Main Use: Gaming (Primarily WoW) The occasional FPS/RTS. Minor video editing.

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080. No immediate plans to upgrade.

List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: World of Warcraft. First and foremost. Preferably super-smooth at max settings. Anything else is a bonus.

Looking to reuse any parts?: Nope.

When will you build?: By November 6th.

Will you be overclocking?: Maybe?

Maybe someone here can help me.

Asus z97-a motherboard and an Intel Core i5 4690k CPU. Both are brand new as of Friday. Have not tried overclocking yet since I wanted the thermal paste on my heatsink and CPU to settle before doing anything.

Installed all the components on Friday and everything was fine until Saturday. Install went smoothly, the graphics card worked fine, all the ram was accounted for and all the fans turned on without a hitch. The first boot to several boots to Windows went off without a single issue.

I had just finished up installing the last batch of Windows updates before restarting. I wanted to check out my bios settings just to see what overclocking options were available before deciding to call it a day and going to bed. The only thing I changed was the fan speed on my heatsink. After saving my settings and exiting, the computer would get caught in an endless loop of restarts. I would press the power button, everything would power up and within a few seconds, it would power down and restart the process over again. The computer was never able to maintain any power for more than a few seconds.

The only way I could get it to boot into the bios setup screen was to clear the CMOS. The screen would give me an error message showing that said "Overclocking Failed, please press F1 to enter Setup."

I tried the following:
  • Resetting to the default values of my BIOS
  • Underclocking the CPU
  • Forcing a boot from the BIOS directly to Windows. This would work however, once I restarted it got caught in that endless loop of restarts again.
  • Removing and reinstalling the CPU+Heatsink. The last time I got into BIOS, the CPU was running at stock speed for a Core i5 4590K (3.5ghz) and the temperature was running between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius

The only way for me to stop the endless loop of restarts is to turn off the computer, unplug the power supply and clear the CMOS. After that I can get to the bios settings and boot to Windows from there but that's not a solution, just a workaround.
The upside of all this is that the motherboard and CPU are still under warranty. However, I need my computer for work so I kind of want to avoid the whole process of returning it and waiting another week. Also just to satisfy my curiosity, I'd like to know what could possibly be wrong here.

Most of the parts look good, that CPU is fine for WoW. The only thing I'd recommend is swapping out the PSU for a higher quality/higher wattage one. If you think you'd ever SLI in the future, bumping up to a 750 or 850 watt PSU would be a wise decision. If you aren't going to ever SLI, you can make do with a 550 watt PSU (650 would be better), but the one you selected isn't very high quality.

Best took for checking HDD health? After that transfer this HDD's been humming loudly whenever it first starts up. Then settles down to a soft hum. Read/write sounds are normal.

Better put an HDD on my Black Friday shopping list anyway.

Edit: In case it matters, has the NZXT Phantom chasis ever been known to add to HDD loudness? Like, not having proper dampening or something?

Edit 2: Soft humming might not have been the HDD. It continued after I shut the computer down. Might even be the HDD in my older computer (that sound has always been there). So the HDD that got moved might just be humming loudly upon first startup, then settling down to normal. Anyway, I'll just make a backup of everything important I save between now and Black Friday.

So I finally ordered my PC which I've been holding off on building/buying for over a year now, in anticipation for Haswell-e and the 900 series.

Here's what I got:

Case: NZXT H440 Green/Black
GPU: EVGA GTX 980 SC 4GB
Mobo: ASUS X99 Deluxe
CPU: i7 5820K
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 2400 16GB
SSDs: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB & 250GB
Cooling: Corsair Hydro H100i
PSU: EVGA Supernova 750w G2 Gold
HDD: WD Caviar Black 4TB
Keyboard: Corsair K70 RGB

Oh should mention I'm coming from an i7 950 and a GTX 570, and this PC has been giving me trouble for the last year and a half, so it's been a battle trying to wait out this long to upgrade.

aaaaaand...I think that's about it. Unless I'm forgetting something. Hopefully it gets delivered this week. Can't wait to put this together! :)

Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with that build. You'll love that keyboard

Are more exhale fans better? I ordered a Corsair Air 540 and I could install 2 more fans on the top. But with my bequiet Dark Pro 2 cooler everything is blowing to the back. Would I improve the airflow?

Isn't the general consensus to have positive air pressure to reduce dust build up? So either matched fans or slightly more intake than exhaust

Is there any chance for the 970's price to go down in the next 5 or so months?
I don't follow pc hardware as closely as others here, but from my experience, graphics cards aren't usually something that's worth waiting for price drops. By the time they drop by some minuscule 15% the next card with way better price/performance is right around the corner.

Maybe if you're willing to buy a used card during the fire sale right after the next card is released.

However. it would probably be worth while to at least wait until you can find one at retail price if everything is selling above retail like it seems to be at this moment.

Update your BIOS see if that fixes it.

Someone came up with this idea. Front and back blowing in and top + CPU cooler blowing up. Makes sense because hot air is going up.

Or would you reccomend a different approach?
You can always try some different setups and see what temps you get. However I doubt the intake in the back would do much good since the air might go straight out the top without doing a lot of cooling, a short circuit. And putting the CPU cooler upwards means you're sucking in hot air from the GPUs instead of cool air from the front. I believe that if there was a setup that was noticeably better than the standard one then people would have figured it out by now.

Personally I would use the back and top-back as exhausts, I'd leave the other top slot empty since it might short circuit the front fan and "steal" air from the CPU. Also I'd put an intake in the bottom to help the GPUs.

Oh you're right about the hot air blowing trough the CPU cooler, thanks!

What's better? Negative or positive pressure? 2 front, 1 back and 2 top would result into a negative pressure, that's no disatvantage, right?

Ideally you want positive pressure to keep dust out. You could move one of the top fans (the front one) to the bottom as an intake, this would help the GPUs since the case doesn't have a side fan.

I am thinking of buying a PC pre-configured to my needs online (I am in Europe). Is there a good site (not in the UK*) that would let me choose my own specs and they build it for me?

*High shipping fees and strong £ makes it more expensive than it should be

Okay guys need help with a case:

Which one of these is best as far as cooling goes and water cooling support as well as other goodies.(best value really)

NZXT Phantom 820 <<< $255.00

Corsair Graphite 760T <<< $249

Antec Nineteen Hundred <<< $265.00

Thermaltake Urban T81 <<< $239

or

Stick with my initial choice which is the Cooler Master Storm Trooper, just not sure the Storm Trooper will support the Corsair H105 cooler.

Thanks.

You want positive pressure. More intake than exhaust.

if you have good airflow, the hot air doesn't really have time to go 'up' naturally, you're getting it out of the case.

I think front/back both intake risks creating turbulence in the middle of the case rather than a smooth in-out flow from front to back.

LilJoka

Positive pressure - hot air can linger in case, less dust build up.

Negative pressure the opposite. I usually go for slightly negative pressure.

MoonGred

Member
When talking about less dust, what does that mean in real life scenarios, are we talking cleaning it out every 6 months with negative pressure and once a year with positive pressure. Or is the difference incremental?
I've never put a whole lot of thought into the dust part as I keep everything fairly tidy. My main concern is just getting the hot air out.

Heya guys,

I recently came into some money and I was thinking of building a home theatre pc.

Something around £400 maybe? All I know is I want it to be fast and be good enough to use the Steam Streaming System.

Hi guys.

I want to get a new case and I kind of like the Silverstone RVZ01, but I have two questions about it, being a case on the smaller side:

  • Can I use my current PSU - Corsair CX 750 W with it?
  • Does the Gigabyte 780 3gb fit in it?

MrArseFace
Haven't the foggiest. I want to say NUC only because of Intel though.

what do you need from your HTPC? a recent i3 NUC with 4GB ram and small SSD would be silent and enough to stream from another PC running steam, stream media from a NAS (or your other PC) and run some background tasks (eg plex media server or sabnzbd etc).

If you want to play blurays then you'll need a bigger chassis. If you want to host all your media in it, then you'll want something with lots of drive bay space.

I would like an all inclusive. Something fast, with a large amount of storage with server capability. If your suggesting that an i3 and 4GB of ram is enough then I can start looking up some builds.

A DVD Optical Drive would be nice.

I don't really need a tag, but I figured I'd get one to make people jealous. Is it working?
Somebody make RAM prices drop to what they were in 2012 please.

Something like Fractal node 304 would be perfect if an optical drive isn't needed. Can have 6 HDDs plus a few SSDs in that case with a mITX board and silent tower cooler.

Can even go for the Pentuim G3258.

Or is it just easier to buy an external?
Buy an external then only pull it out when you need it. The node is a beautiful case.

If an optical is super necessary look at Silverstone. They have many different htpc options

Should I just go with the V750 in the build sheet list? Or do you have other recommendations? Modular really appeals to me as a neatfreak who's last PC had horrific cable management.

So, when do people think M.2 PCIe SSDs will become more common (and more in line in terms of price/GB with normal SSDs)?

Now that I have this slot I want to use it, ideally with a 1TB SSD that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Just raid 0 SSD. Same performance and cheaper.

Dat turbulence. Just blow straight through. Front -> cooler -> exit rear. That's what the case was designed to be good at.

Seems like every 970 is out of stock now. Nvidia has a winner on their hands here.

I hope retailers don't start jacking up the price for the demand. I'm actually a little regretful I didn't buy one immediately. I'm still trying to decide which mfg I want to get. ASUS Strix and Gigabyte Windforce are front runners.
