Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Is there any downside to getting a full tower? Apart from the obvious (cost, how much space it takes up).

I was thinking more in terms of whether it is harder to manage airflow because there's a greater volume of air or something like that.

Not really. Only downside can be in the bigger towers where the psu cables might not reach, but airflow is usually better and you can fit better cooling solutions. The big towers can usually fit several radiators or tons of fans, and the air flow is less likely to be restricted by tightly packed components.

Take this with a grain of salt.....but I usually buy a superclocked card in the hopes that a card that was tested to run at that overclock has a better shot at overclocking even further. I remember EVGA used to deny that they binned gpus this way, and it's still possible to get a great overclocker with a stock card, but for $10 you at least get those few mhz of headroom and a card that has already been tested to overclock (at least a bit)
Not really true. My Gigabyte 780 OC can't really OC anymore then it already is.

MFAA, from everything that I have read, is not at all in the drivers yet. Still in development.

That is one of the things I was most looking forward too.

Let's be honest, I can already downsample. A new form of high-quality, aggressively optimized AA? This is something I want to play around with.

That's why they call it the silicon lottery. The consensus is, generally you do have more success with non-reference cards though.

Is there any brand that doesn't overclock the 970 card? I want to buy one and keep it alive for at least 4-5 years. Maybe more. Can't afford both the card (which is more than 100$ more expensive in Europe) and a third party cooler which will cost me an extra 50 euros.

I just grabbed a EVGA 980 from newegg.
they have some in stock, EVGA haven't steered me wrong so the stock blower should be just fine.

Ah well, Alternate.de was clickbaiting on friday it seems. My card is not even shipped cause they don't have any stock. On friday they claimed to have them in stock and my card will be here by today/tomorrow :(

Same thing happened to me with Scan.co.uk. It was showing as in stock, I ordered (with next day delivery) and they sent me an email at 8pm Friday saying the supplier had let them down. Suffice to say I called them first thing Saturday morning and cancelled (it was a £590 order so their loss) as you can't say its in stock if its not in stock!

Anyway, I found a replacement which should be here tomorrow some time (already despatched thank god) so all's well that ends well.

Just wanted to mention for anyone rocking a Alienware X51 R2 with the 330 external PSU(like me) you can install the GTX 970!

It should fit perfectly and uses less power and generates less heat than the OEM GTX 760 ti in it already.

However the GTX 980 will not fit due to its length of 10.5 inches, unless someone releases a shorter card.

I don't see why such a card wouldn't last for 4-5 years. I don't think I've ever had a gpu die in that span of time, even after overclocking myself.

Why would you buy an aftermarket cooler when there's plenty of 970s shipping with fantastic coolers as it is?

These factory overclocks really aren't going to hurt the longevity of the card as the voltage is the same but if you really must, surely you can just downclock the card yourself?

Regardless these cards dynamically scale clock speed. They only hit these high frequencies when under load. I don't see what is causing this paranoia.

GPU's are not like CPU's. You don't need to buy an aftermarket cooler to replace the one that comes with your card just for a mild overclock. All of these 970's already come with custom cooling solutions that will provide plenty of cooling overhead for not only these factory overclocks, but also a decent user overclock if one so wishes.

Seriously, there's nothing to worry about. You can see the benchmarks for these cards, where many of them, even with the factory overclocks are hitting mid 60 degree temps under load, which is fantastic.

But yes, if you absolutely insist, there are some cards being sold without any sort of overclock. EVGA's with the ACX1.0 non-SC edition is stock settings, for instance.

Bummed to hear about the EVGA cards. I have two of their 670s and they've been great. Looking at maybe getting two ASUSes instead. Will I going to have a problem running those in SLI with those coolers? I've only ever used cards with the blower-style coolers on them.

Edit: Haha, Amazon just removed the $10.00 discount on the ASUS as I posted this.

Would not recommend the EVGA after the problems people have been reporting though.

My Gigabyte GTX 970s didn't come with a SLI bridge. In fact, the cards only came with a quick setup guide and 2 molex to pci-e cables. I hope the mother board comes with one.

They're not super loud cards necessarily, just loud compared to the alternatives.

Just saying, if they absolutely insist on a stock clock card, the option is available.

ok then, i guess im paranoid about the OC on the cards. Its just that i don't have a good experience with cooling solutions that aren't aftermarket. I've seen a few slightly older cards hitting 85+c, even 90, even with non-reference cooling solutions like Gygabyte, MSI, Sapphire, etc. So, if these coolers are good enough to keep things under 65 (under load), it will be a new for me.

lucky you!

The major stores/sites here do not have them in stock. I'll just wait a day or two and if Amazon is getting some stock in that time I'll switch.

There is no "problem". The cards are fine, albeit a bit more noisy than some of the other cards. That can be solved with good ventilation and fan profile though. In fact he should choose EVGA if he is worried about longevity of the cards due to the warranty.

Wow. That sucks. Guess that clinches it. I'll be going with the MSI card. The main draw of the Asus to me was the price. The MSI out performs it otherwise in factory OC, cooling, noise and user overclocking.

Well, someone actually just bought my 780 for $350 on ebay, wasn't expecting for it to still gain so much. But 970s (particularly Gigabyte 970s that I'm interested in) are completely out of stock. What's the ETA on restocking?

I have a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 670, and it stays around 65 under moderate (gaming) load. (I.e. playing AC Freedom Cry at 1080p) Idles at like 33.

As stated in the linked article above they admit the fan curve is a bit too aggressive and they want to change it with a bios update eventually.

Yeah, a few already mentioned it on the X51 thread. Is the perfect size. Whenever the reference card is in stock, I'll get one for my X51.

Good luck mate :)

I'm sure all major shops will be looking to restock ASAP. Most UK stores have restock dates for this Friday but it could be different for you in Germany.

I am unfamiliar with the fan profile setting. Is there a good guide to setting one up?

Wow. I didn't expect the Gigabyte to be THAT much cooler. Price justified? I'd love to see a shootout between the MSI and Gigabyte.

Yeah the Gigabyte 970 is amazing. I was playing Battlefield 4 at 120+fps and the card didn't even break a sweat. It hovered around 60c under load for me with a Coolermaster HAF case.

It's worth every penny.

SLI-bridges usually only comes with your motherboard.

This, but only if it supports SLI/Crossfire

Or you could just get them separately.
Never heard of a GPU which ships with an SLI/Crossfire bridge

Why would you get a reference one?
