Why do people pick up smoking cigerretes these days?

Does it still actually look cool though? I know a lot of people I've met see it as an immediate turn off. For some reason smoking cigarettes to look cool feels like such a 90's thing.

I will say, Don Draper's classy as fuck look wouldn't be complete without a lucky strike in his hand.

Definitely. I feel like it's quickly becoming stigmatized. I rarely see people smoking out and about now and it is almost shocking whenever I spot someone lighting up.

Leaving the US makes you aware of just how much people in the US don't smoke.
I swear to god my cousins in Mexico do nothing but smoke all day, it's crazy. Had a ton of European friends who must have had lungs as black as coal during college too. What is it with Europe and smoking?

It's hard for me not to smoke. I'm from Kentucky, which has one of the highest smoking rates in the US. Nearly all of my friends smoke (like 90% or more). I'm constantly being offered cigarettes, and often accept. I just don't buy a pack because I know at that point it becomes a habit.

I think that really depends on where you live. In my neck of the woods that's not true at all.

I smoke occasionally. Sometimes as a social thing, other times because it mixes well with alcohol and other substances.

Smoking is a great way to reduce stress and can help you retain knowledge.

It smells great and looks cool too.

It also is deadly.

I quit in 2002, and I was a heavy smoker (2-3 packs/day) for five years, and there isn't a day that goes by where I don't miss it.

My girlfriend smokes at work to blow off steam, mostly at work with co-workers. I don't agree with it but it's not like I can force her to stop. She doesn't do it any other time.

Its has a tremendously calming effect, can be solid punctuation to an otherwise dull workaday routine, and is gods damned magical when paired with alcohol or caffeine, especially in quantity.

I stopped about two years ago, and while I don't have physical urges for it, I miss it for the psychic shift that would accompany my smoke breaks. Those few minutes outside with nothing but thoughts and smoke were often enough to break through some of my most difficult software design problems.

But as I get older and the war on drugs is seemingly falling apart before my very eyes I look forward to becoming an old stoner at some point. Gotta look to the future, ya know?

New smokers are on the rise iirc. It's like any other consumable product i guess, young people want to experiment and they inevitably hang onto some of those and they become habits. For me it was just... something to do with friends when we were bored and skipping class.

Hell no it doesn't. Unless you're smoking cloves or something.
+1 stress reducer

I started smoking while drunk the last few years. I enjoy the smoke, fire and socializing. It's pretty fun. Sober it tastes like fucking shit though, so it's never really been a big part of my life.

So weird. Where I'm from in Florida, you pretty much never see people smoking in public. In Seattle though, there are people smoking everywhere all the time. It's gross and probably the only thing this place doesn't have over my hometown.

Quit a few years ago. Started as a stress-reliever, and smoking in the evening relaxed me as well as waking me up a little bit, which helped me stay up for long nights (worked better than caffeine). And living in NYC at the time, a large part of my day is walking so smoking gave me something to do with my hands lol.

On the flip side, while anecdotal, I swear 50-80% of the population of this town smokes. Smoking here is more common than not. Hell, my entire department smokes besides me.

At the cost of your health though. :(
Sanity is a major part of one's health.

I could never recommend them in good conscious though - they are so crazy addictive. If somehow you've managed to smoke casually and haven't gotten caught into the habit count yourself very lucky.

Cigarettes have a TERRIBLE smell

people who smoke and drink are literally repulsive to me.

Also a big turn off for me and women

Smoking with weed or alcohol is a pretty good combo tbh.

not a fan of it when sober though. The buzz is so weak and makes me feel shit afterwards.

I do find it very unusual how many college age kids I see smoking... There is so much research out there. Just boggles the mind sometimes.

That stale smell that gets into your clothes is gross, but the smell of that first drag as you light the cigarette is one of the best smells in the world.

The only smoke smell I could stand was a Black and Mild/Gold but that's borderline cigar which explains it.

You know, I don't smoke, but I am guilty of finding the smell of a freshly lit cig as being pleasing...

The people I know who still smoke only do so because of stress relief.
Same. Especially when it comes to stress at work.

I feel bad that people get THAT stressed out.

What's even worse is that once you start smoking, you can't stop because of nicotine addiction which only adds even more stress.

I picked it up from hanging out with people who smoke. It's super dumb and super hard to stop once you've passed a certain point.
