Why do people pick up smoking cigerretes these days?

If you smoked in the 19th century, I've got hugs for you

In my case it's more because I don't know what else to do. Helps me kill the time.
And probably myself, haha.

I've been cutting down on smoking, I go days without them. But yea man, it feels good.

Also sitting down for long periods of time daily can shorten your life span but we don't have laws against that.

Because they don't give a crap if they die and it feels good. Also social opportunities when out drinking. Well at least for me

started when i was 15, quit when i was 23. those following months after quitting are really quite eye opening. felt so much better. then i started again while i was 27 approaching the end of my schooling. came back worse than before and smoking more than i ever did. quickly realized how disgusting it is and picked up e cigs. been on that ever since and im working my way down on the nicotine level. hoping to give up ecigs in the future as well. will power is all it takes, nothing more.

I can smoke a cigarette every once in a while and have no desire to pick up another...When I go to bars if they're a bunch of cute girls outside smoking I'll buy a cig or two and chill with them in my leather jacket while looking existentially frustrated to look cool...No doubt breh

I'll never understand it. No one likes you, you clothing smell, people are constantly trying to stop you, your kisses taste like hot ass, your breath smells like hot ass. Why smoke?

Don't

get it.

Smokers tend to befriend non-judgmental types. You wouldn't know them.

Or maybe it's attractive because the hands and the mouth are abundantly represented in the cortex and are also erotic zones. Kinda like when a woman eats an ice cream bar or lollipop... kinda fucking hot. Add in smoke and there's a sexy mystery.

Interesting!

Curiosity. You try it socially at just parties, then youre hooked

I'vw had less than half a cigarette amd sometimes have dreams about having a smoke. I hate to think what Id be like if I made it a habit. Definitely have no intention of doing it ever again

Dunno. But I see a lot of younger people who can't drink yet (that's a clue) out at hookah bars smoking. I guess for them it's just a way to go out even if they cannot drink yet.

I don't smoke but I do find it funny how nonsmokers go off the deep end spewing hatred towards smokers. I especially find it funny when they make some unnecessary hate filled comment, then follow it with "they look stupid/unintelligent!".

Given how many people say they take up smoking to kill time, I wonder how much smart phones have impacted the adoption rate for smoking. Suddenly everyone has a digital device that's always on and engages both the fingers, and one's attention span.

Also sitting down for long periods of time daily can shorten your life span but we don't have laws against that.

Sitting doesn't emit a cloud that bothers other people around you.

I am a daily smoker, I smoke atleast 6-8 cigs a day. Its a terrible habit, but its pretty hard to quit. I started smoking to escape awkward situations, stress and it goes good with coffee. Personally its very ironic that I smoke since I was a lifeguard, in grad school for science course and will most likely be in the research field or medical field once I am done. I should prob quit...

Back during my life guarding days, some of high school staff told me I made smoking look badass due to my style of smoking and question me about it. I mention to them to never do it. Such a hypocritical statement...

So many doctors and nurses smoke

An abundance of disposable cash and naivety. There's a reason people usually start in the teens.

Knowing the risks and with all of the information out there, I wouldn't know why people would do it. People can't be told what to do and what not to do which is why I don't mind if other people smoke but I damned well rather people make informed decisions about all of their life decisions and it seems counterproductive to smoke to relieve stress or whatever the hell reasons smokers give when it ultimately does absolutely nothing for you health wise but give you a preventable death.

My gf's parents smoke, they've smoked their entire lives, and they won't make it the next 10 years unless they quit but they won't because they can't and because tobacco is too addictive. My gf takes their addiction as a lesson to NOT smoke ever and hasn't smoked in her entire life nor is she not planning on picking it up in the future.

I don't think smokers are stupid, I honestly don't even care what smokers do and if they still want to smoke, then that's on them to endure the risks of smoking. I can say this though, tobacco smoking has zero health benefits and is the number one cause of preventable death among adults. Tobacco companies are enablers too which is why they are banned from doing anything, at least in the US, anymore on the commercial side of things from advertising to even being displayed in entertainment as anything other than harmful and with good reason. The product is nothing but a poisonous money maker that plays off of the fact that a smoker will never quit or moderate their addictions due to the substances in their product.

Initially it's the rather powerful nicotine high sensation that's very pleasurable but also fades over time the longer you smoke. After that it's the calming sensation of controlled breathing in and out slowly that tends to relax you. You become reliant on cigarettes whenever under any degree of stress and thus the product becomes this relaxing vice to which you become dependent. It's also amplified by caffeine and alcohol so coffee drinkers and those that drink socially tend to rely on cigarettes to increase their enjoyment of nights out.

Also of note is the extremely high level of addiction power that nicotine holds. It's one of the most addictive substances on the planet. You only need to smoke a few times before its power kicks in. Thus those that start can find it virtually impossible to successfully quit.

I started when I was younger because everyone around me we doing it. It made me wonder "if cigarettes are so dangerous there must be a really good reason why people continue to smoke." As a naive 17 year old I bought a pack and now as a near 20 year old I am addicted. I want to quit but it is really, really hard. My mum smokes so there are always cigarettes nearby and nearly everyone in my course smokes.
It is extremely hard to get away from and when you're quitting you need to totally remove yourself from easily available cigarettes for the first few months.

Also, in Australia a pack of 20 Marlboro Red cigarettes is almost $20 which is just downright depressing. Spending that amount of money on a dirty habit is terrible.

This isn't a shaming thread, just a genuine curiosity.

The detrimental health effects are pretty well known these days, and anti-smoking campaigns out in full force it seems. Are new smokers generally still young people? Are they pressured into doing it? Addiction after the occasional casual smoke? Conscious choice as an adult?

In my circle of friends, aside from a very infrequent cigarette at parties/outing, none of them have picked it up as a habit. Even in my general age group, regular smoking is not something I've noticed as a popular trend. Is today's youth picking up smoking as much as before? Are the majority of smokers holdovers from previous eras?

I noticed e-cigs/vapors becoming a trend at my university.

As for regular cigarettes, that's mostly older people at my job.

I had an older co-worker who smoked for years and finally decided to quit but found out she had lung cancer a few months later. Now her family is puting most of their finances towards her chemo and radiation treatments.

Despite this there are still younger people who continue to smoke during breaks.

It could be that when you're young, you don't think much of longterm consquences.

Because I like smoking. I quit, but when I hang around certain friends I usually will light up a couple.

I think my first exposure to cigarettes as a concept was from watching Ghostbusters at like age 4, and those guys didn't make it look appealing at all.

smoking does a few things

first off, It feels nice and can open up social situations for talking to other people smoking. life slows down for a bit and you live in the moment smoking your cig.

thing is you then are constantly craving this moment because it is the only time you can feel at peace.

but most importantly it gives you something to look forward to throughout the day if you're going through rough times.

one of the reasons why so many people who usually are in dysfunctional situations or have little income do it.

you become mentally addicted to it and it becomes a ritual that relieves discomfort.

I used to not be able to go to parties or bars without cigarettes. I had far too much social anxiety.

Changed my social scene and the people in my life and quitting smoking was much easier.

oddly I still crave cigs when I'm feeling down and alone. I quit smoking two months ago and have had zero desire to go back. feels nice.

More smoking advertisements

What a stretch of a statement. All that smoke is clouding your brain hole.
What's a brain hole? ^^

But you are right in that it is a huge stretch what NP said. You can meet and befriend all kinds of people, doesn't matter if you are a smoker or not.

Best of luck with how it goes.

Smoking makes you relax. It's a drug that gives a certain type of rush or feeling, like any other. It's a ton more subtle than alcohol or weed, but it's still there.

Edit: also lol smoking thread hyperbole

"Smokers are subhuman and i literally vomit whenever i see them"

As good as it can look in media (especially in black and white), if you require a prop in your hand to be able to emote you have some problems.
