Destiny |OT4| Get your ass to the Vault of Glass and help Timmins find better pants

Like... there are ways to still be productive in it but its all assbackwards and you really, really have to close your eyes and pretend its all good to defend the mess that's in front of everyone. This is simply bad design. You can work around it, sure, but that doesn't make it any less poorly designed and flawed. What's worse is people using "well, if they didn't do it like this then all the bad players would be screwed!" excuse when there are a multitude of ways that this could've been handled better.
I don't agree. I consider myself relatively knowledgeable in terms of game design and try to keep an open mind when beginning any new game. Progression in destiny is relatively unique among systems I have experienced but it is not bad. It's satisfying, I feel like my rewards had a lot more to do with my efforts than with random chance, and I'm able to make consistent progress. I like it. And while I understand that it's extremely different than what people were expecting and that can be frustrating as hell, I'm starting to feel like I'm being told I'm just "defending bad game design" as if I have some personal stake in trying to enjoy poorly designed games, or even at times that I'm an idiot for liking it. It's good. Different, but good. After an adjustment period we're in the middle of right now (Bungie really ought to rename "Legendary Engrams") I bet it will even be remembered as such.

I will append "in my opinion" as I have no expectations of convincing you, but will stress that I recognize that, for sure, a lot of people who are unhappy with this implementation of loot/progression are just misunderstanding it. That much I can be absolutely certain about. It might not be the case for you at all- you probably get it completely, and still don't like it, and that's fine- but it has not been a tiny fraction of the vocal community that fits the description I just offered.

So far as tailoring game structures to be equally rewarding to bad players; only the random rolls on the PvP reward screen actually have that effect.
This is still the best FPS I've played in a long long time so that alone will keep me here for the ride but geez... imagine if the gameplay wasn't good. I'd be throwing this in the bushes.
If the gameplay weren't good I would have played this game for five minutes and never thought about it again.

There are a ton of things that are wrong with Destiny, by the way- some of them are hilariously, outrageously, inexplicably bad. But this particular issue isn't actually one of them.

Looking forward to my bonus ascended shards tonight and possibly replacing my chest piece if the Queen's is more pleasing to the eye.

The Progression is essentially just fucking Fucked...
But it doesn't fix the fact that I spent the last 55 hours of playtime stuck behind a Wall that was completely dependent on a random drop system.

Did you max out marks both weeks as well? If so, you should've been at 26-27 easily before this event. So......I don't quite get where you went wrong? Maxing both marks and hitting rank 2 for Crucible / Vanguard is like an automatic 3 armor pieces assuming RNG is fucking you.

I still agree with your premise, but for entirely different reasons is all.

That's what happens when a game starts costing $500m. People start saying "listen motherfuckers, ship what you have or we're going to hunt down your families". Luckily Activision has said they're in it for the long haul. Games need to ship to start bringing in revenue. Now that that's happened, we can expect to see some of the missing stuff added in successive patches.

I hope that's the case. I really do.

^completely agree

i'm hopeful i just don't trust bungie to make the committed effort. i'd love to be surprised though

that's being incredibly dismissive....

It isn't as though that the sentiment isn't true whatsoever. It's better to trust your gut than to listen to what other people want. Nine times out of ten, people don't even know what they want until someone presents it to them.

Regardless, that opinion lends itself to the idea Bungie knows what they're doing.

To be honest, I think this game is suffering from a huge identity crisis, though this may be more evident in the next few months. From a design standpoint, Destiny is all over the place while nixing certain features that make the included features function within the game. The go-to example of this is how the hell are you going to have a raid with no way in-game to find people to do it with you?

So far, we've been talking about the loot and I've said my piece on it, but that's just one person pissing in an ocean of piss. Granted, the game is fun as hell, but what in the world is Destiny?

I hear what you are saying and completely agree. I was simply chiming in that, whether we are talking video games or foreign policy, you cannot make 100% of the people happy 100% of the time.

does difficulty effect the loot item drops in any way? I want to try the farm cave and was wondering if I would get better stuff if I was to place it on Hard.

Yes 100 Marks from Vanguard (not counting the 37 from the week before), and 100 Marks from The Crucible ( picked it up over the weekend of launch and couldn't max anything out with limited amount of game time on that first week). that total will buy you exactly one piece of Armour from each (which is what I have). When Xur came he was offering a piece that I had already purchased (and it didn't offer the stats nor the abilities that I utilize).

I think the problem, Hawk, is that nothing in-game teaches people how to do this. I mean, look at the mess with the Vanguard cap that's literally fucking people this week if they decided to promote Dead Orbit.

I realized pretty quickly it was dumb to NOT max out Vanguard ASAP, and as a result Crucible. I even started going nuts saying it around the time you did (and you did it far more eloquently, I might add). Public Events were my bros even as people sought out the Treasure Caves of the world.

Playing MMO's since Ultima Online and Neverwinter Nights helped, though, with realizing that. And even then it took me a few days of really looking around....but, remember, Bungie went out of its way to not call it an MMO. They actively fought against the term when they should have just acquiesced so people realized what they were getting into.

As for the game..ot's a lot like the PvP for me. The basics, the underlying systems....when I'm with a full Control team that's complementing each other and giving each other orbs? It's amazing.

There's nothing in-game to really show people any of that, though.

Wait a minute.

What if the Raid is the hard barrier preventing cave farmers from hitting max level?

...

Woah.

"Oh, you stood in front of a cave for 20-30 hours to level up? Cool. Here, I need you to play the hardest game of Control ever while time travelling."

Any MMO developer will tell you that some people are literally never happy, and most people are always unhappy about something. That's just how it is.
If you want to hear it from me rather than an MMO developer, here's an lengthy expansion of that universal truth

of course I was talking about another game (an actual MMO), but it's all just a little bit of history repeating.
level 25: maxed all Marks in both Vanguard and Crucible. Got Vanguard to level 3, Crucible to Rank 2 and a independent faction to Rank 1, which bought my way into level 25. Then I ran Weekly Heroics and Every Daily Heroic, Did at least 1 public event a day and did several lvl 24 strikelist matches hoping for an upgrade material or Legendary drop, and was still waiting for that last ascended shard to get to level 26: This took an additional 55 hours

But it doesn't fix the fact that I spent the last 55 hours of playtime stuck behind a Wall that was completely dependent on a random drop system.
holy fuck dude what. you should easily have been able to get to 26 with that much Rep/ maxed marks, without needing a single ascendant shard! 55 hours. my brain is so full of what right now. what did you buy.
This was me, I was totally on board and had the same beliefs as your guide but it just wasn't happening for me :( After three play sessions at 20, handful of hours or more per each session, I got bumpkiss. Last night I resorted to the stupid loot cave and it has rekindled my interest in the game because I went up 4 levels in that one play session and can now play some of the higher content like the Weekly Strike or doing the higher lvl strikes with my higher level friends. Just a little more and I can do the Raid! All I wanted was to go up a couple levels so I can handle new challenges where I figured I'd start getting better loot. The loot cave is great not just because of the cave, but because you get a recurring public event that can get you shards/energy AND two beacons to get rep while you're shooting into that silly little cave.

In any case, now that I'm at a decent level and the Queen stuff has hit, I can go back to normal play. Now I just need to find a faster way to get Ascended Shards. I think the Night Strike or whatever it's called does so but I'm still too low level for that just yet.
Hell, I hereby straight-up endorse the Loot cave or we've woken the hive or whatever engram farming you like to get to level 24 if you're having trouble. It's progression after that where things vary from other games and some perspective is necessary.

I assumed you had maxed out first week given your hours count. Yeah, you were just a week / cycle behind then in terms of the guaranteed way and not the Treasure Cave. That sucks.

Me too!

I just don't know what weapon I want to buy. Nothing jumps out at me as a must-have, unless I am missing something.

RNGesus blessed me with The Devil You Know a couple of days ago so now I don't have to waste my marks on a weapon. I'm all about dat white Sparrow S-31V. Faster and with lateral movement like the pikes. Mmmmmm. Really hope we get some vendors dishing out Legendary vehicles with some weapons down the road....

I hope that's the case. I really do.

I'm not saying the missing stuff won't come in paid DLC btw. It's up in the air whether it will. Honestly I won't mind if that's how it is. There are really 3 business models a company can use for an online game. Subscription, MTX (microtransaction), or frequent paid DLCs / expansions. I know everyone would like a "pay once, play the game forever" model, but it just doesn't work that way anymore. So given the above 3 models, I'm much happier with the 3rd.

When you start up a mission and somebody on your fireteam forgot to check something in the Tower.

Orbit is no joke

Do you get a legendary every time you do the Queen's Wrath? Or just the first time?

everytime. And it's likely to be for your class. I have the worst luck with RNG, and I got a warlock helmet for the first mission, warlock chest for the second. It's either chest or helmet. They're ugly as shit, but at least they're legendary right? lol

Here's the question I've been dying to ask:

What legendary/exotic weapons are worth looking at?

I can tell you Hard Light becomes good once you max out the stability. The Last Word is godly, but I can see folks preferring other handcannons. Gjallarhorn can only be hilarious if maxed out and used against lowbies in PvP.

I have more exotic weapons than legendary ones (wtf?) so school me. I'm looking for a good auto-rifle. Point me in the right direction while giving me your opinions on other legendary/exotic weapons.

Also, I got this sniper from the raid and it's fucking amazing. It does void damage, bonus damage to the
oracles
, and every headshot I get causes the corpses to explode.

3 Queens missions and all three have me the same chest....is this supposed to happen or is it just bad luck?

Don't get me wrong, the shards have been nice but was hoping for more of a set...

Yeah, I read that and was confused too. I hit 26 last night and I was 17 as of this past Friday. I would say getting from 20 to 24 was the same amount of time that it took me to get from 24 to 25 and from 25 to 26... I think getting to 27 or 28 is where it's really going to start taking some time to get the mats.
