My iPhone approach tends to be to wait for the revised version of the new hardware.
iPhone 4S, iPhone 5S, and I'll wait for the iPhone 6S, or whatever they call it.

It'll be interesting to see how games settle down on the new hardware in the next 6 months.

I agree with this, but also think that early adopters should just chill their jets a bit in jumping to conclusions or constantly asking which games support it. Give it a month and the apps will be updated. That's the trouble with Apple's release strategy, outside of a few exceptions most devs won't see and be able to work with the new hardware until it's released, so there's always a gap in things being updated.

Got a 6, and have started messing with Metal Slug Defense now that games are more playable. Man, wish I got this game when there were more people playing. Multiplayer is fun but it takes forever to get matches and looking around in wikis and such it seems there's a ton of units that are absolute necessities that'll cost a good sum of money to obtain.

Any recommendations for similar games? Still having fun w/ MSD but if there's a better alternative I dunno if I want to keep playing this one.

Turbo Dismount, the sequel to Stair Dismount, is finally releasing on IOS tomorrow. Played the game a lot on PC, imagine Stair Dismount + Burnout's Crash mode and that's Turbo Dismount. There's not much "game", but it's fun and the vehicular mayhem is always worth a slow-mo replay

A few under-the-radar releases worth checking out

Don't Drop That - Free
Don't Drop That! is a minimalist arcade game that will piss you off!
Random shapes are dropping into the boiling plasma, causing a catastrophic chain reaction and overflow! You, piloting the ultimate stick, must catch those unstable shapes to save all humanity. This is no easy task, as you will have to adjust your thrusters to compensate for the mass of each shape you catch. If you drop too many, the plasma will consume all!

Bipolarity - Free
Bipolarity is your next impossible game.
The perfect mix between the simple control of the casual games and the flavor of the classic arcade games of the 80s.
But don’t be confident, Bipolarity will put your skills, reflexes and finger synchronization to the test.
And don't forget: Avoid the walls.

Mosaic - Free
Mosaic is a puzzle game about simplicity, but that doesn't mean that it's easy.
If you know the game Lights Out, you will already understand the premise of Mosaic. To win, you need to turn on all the color squares on the screen.

Page Flipper - Free
The NEW style of "Simple Casual" game! How quick are your reflexes?
Quickly step on the correct square to avoid being crushed by the flipping page!
With quick and accurate instinct, you can flip more pages.
Level up your character by collecting more cubes on the page as fast as possible.

I think they attribute that to GPU scaling to make apps bigger, so I'd hope that once apps start running native, this will be a non-issue.

I think it's due to the 6 Plus running native apps at 2208 × 1242 and then downscaling them to 1920 × 1080. I read somewhere that this was due to an iOS quirk that only lets you render at specific resolutions (1920x1080 is not possible.)

That's why I'm curious about games running natively. Can anyone take a screenshot on the 6 Plus and tell me what the dimensions of the file are? Taking screenshots in the homescreen/Safari supposedly produces 2208 × 1242 files.

If they don't make an A8X chip for the iPad next month I think I'm gonna skip the upgrade this year. Not worth replacing my 128GB Air for a 25-50% performance increase and Touch ID.

This free iPad mini has convinced me that the next iPad I get is going to be in that form factor. The size is perfect for games and reading books. PERFECT. I have rediscovered Wayward Souls because of it, it's the perfect size for that game. Never buying a full size iPad again.

Glad you finally saw the light mate :)

Anyway, I fired up and beat in a couple of hours The Silent Age, lil' gem, is the second chapter still coming? I'd definitely throw a few bucks at it, TSA for free was a steal.

And I've been enjoying Cytus, it's fun if you take it as some kind of "My Very First Bemani Game" experience, and the game is choke full of content, can't believe I've gotten it for free.
Dunno how much it costs now but you guys should check it out, although my favorite iOS Bemani is definitely still Jubeat, but it isn't fair comparing the two when you need to spend >$100 to get a comparable amount of content on the latter (well, it'd also be better content tho).

Episode two which is the final part of the game arrives late 2014/early 2015 last I heard. They're in the final stages of tweaking the game and have finished all the art for it already.

Edit: Their blog makes it sound like the game is closer to release than 2015. http://thesilentage.com/blog/

YES! Stair Dismount has been on my phone(s) since it came out, and it has provided hours of endless entertainment and stress relief. Can't wait for this.

I'm interested to see how the model for this works. I read that they were planning to make this free-to-play, though the PC version of it is one purchase only. Maybe it'd be something like you can play a certain amount of money and you'd get access to all content, like with the PC version of it

Anyway, I'm so excited to mess with it

Interesting, didn't know it was going to be F2P. Really hope it's just free with game unlock. It would be really unfair to mobile gamers if they shoehorned in the usual freemium elements since the PC version is nothing like that

But either way, the game is awesome. You can place your guy in different poses, choose different routes to drive, choose from a wide variety of vehicles (skateboard and shopping cart to fire truck), and place all kinds of obstacles like brick walls, ramps, speed boosts, and oil slicks

Driving into intersection, getting t-boned by a truck so hard you get torn in half by the impact, and then getting decapitated by your flying car, following by a huge pile-up...never gets old

I hope they kept the first person camera. It's both nauseating and awesome.

I could have sworn Stair Dismount was also F2P at one point (if not currently). You got some levels you could play, and maybe there were ads every once in a while. If you bought any additional character models or level packs, ads went away.

my concern is, I am interested in going back to ios, as I have a htc one x atm, and that thing you could fry an egg on when you play games

Yeah, like I said it's the first time I've encountered it, and it sounds like it's done the same on other handsets. Definitely plan on testing others as I spend more time with this 6.

Oh, so regarding Turbo Dismount, courtesy of TA
One really interesting thing about Turbo Dismount is its pay model. Similar to Stair Dismount (or at least, the route Stair Dismount eventually took) Turbo Dismount will be free to download and play. It'll have advertisements, and sell additional level packs and vehicles for 99¢ each as IAP. Also, you'll be able to play a preview of any level or new vehicle by watching video ads, giving you a chance to actually check something out before plunking down some cash for it.

However, if you don't feel like dealing with ads and IAP packs, a "premium unlock" option will give you all available levels and vehicles as well as disable ads for a one-time price of $5.99. Even cooler, that premium unlock price is adaptive, so if you've bought an IAP pack or two and eventually decide to go the premium route, the $5.99 price will adjust accordingly based on what you've already spent on the game.

Is there any way to buy in-app purchases outside of an app?

I grabbed a few games on the Japanese App store and put them on my phone (on which I use my U.S. region account) via my MacBook, and I while I can play them, I obviously can't make in-app purchases because I'm on a different account. It doesn't seem like there is any way to make these purchases in the OSX version of iTunes/App store, either. Are they really tied 100% to the account, whereas the base game data can be shared?

If this is the case, it really sucks, because it means I'm pretty much blocked from any game that is a free download but offers the ability to purchase the full game from within the app (Ace Attorney, etc.)

You can sign out of your US account on your phone and switch to the Japanese account, and then launch the games and make the IAP purchases. Everything else will work just fine, and updating your US apps will just ask you once for the password.

If he has his Japanese Apple ID saved on the device it should even ask him the password for that when buying IAPs in a game from that store directly even when he's actively signed into another Apple ID. That's what it does to me for my US store bought apps while I use my regular UK account.

(This whole process is super seamless with Touch ID FYI. :p)

Also note that Game Center can use a different Apple ID than what you use as your App Store ID as well altogether.

Edit: Thinking out loud, if The Banner Saga was meant to release in September, then aren't we gonna get it tonight?

If so, this week will be one of the best release weeks in a long time

I wouldn't hold my breath about Banner Saga releasing today (my top wanted game on my iPad right now).
I asked (and asked...and asked again) directly the devs and the answer is no date yet.
About 10 days ago they told me they were still squashing bugs on tablet version (I'm assuming iPad) so while it can be out soon (I hope) I do not think it will be out this week...or the next one.
I'm pretty sure if they submitted we would know....so we are at the very least 2 weeks from getting it on our devices.

And yeah, I'm hoping to be proven wrong tonight.

Thanks EA for stripping pretty much every mode out of FIFA 15 except for Ultimate Team. Because I didn't find them useful at all </sarcasm>

Well, it's a thin piece of aluminium, which is a soft metal. Of course it will bend when you apply pressure to it. How could it not? An iPad will bend in the same way, but nobody carries it a back pocket and sits on it. Which is a pretty bad idea, for obvious reasons.

I don't get the "bendgate" hysteria.

The guy carried it in his front pocket though

Just tried this. My home screen screenshot is 1242x2208:

Picked up Anomaly Defenders, which comes out on iOS today, as part of the latest Humble Bundle (for the Android version).

Critics were unreasonably hard on the PC version of the game (5/10 on Gamespot) mainly because they flipped from their reverse tower defense to a regular standard TD. Yes, the others were more "ground breaking". But this game is awesome for fans of TDs period.

The usual excellent graphics from the series and I think the RPG-like skill tree for towers and upgrades is a great way to add depth to the genre.

If you love TDs. I'd say this is a valuable addition to your catalog. It may not reinvent the wheel but the level of polish, three difficulties and the skill tree twist just make it a game to own.
