Both. It drops during certain checkpoints but they're held ransom until you beat it, if you beat it. Otherwise you can kiss goodbye to anything you grabbed along the way, well that's the main drop anyway. It also drops from chests but it's not definite, however these are given to you instantly.

Like most mmo events, because they want to extend longevity of content. Hey tie a little bit of content to a grind and make it limited time so that you will come back to the game later. Makes you wonder how much was cut out to create these random events they will toss at us.

Just the other day I was thinking how good it was that the game didn't have dumb challenges that would mess matches up like Halo Reach... and in came the head shot bounties. People on your team will let themselves get stabbed to death trying to get a head shot instead of just killing the opponent. I thought Bungie knew better than this by now.

I think he does sell them, but it seems random. One day I just kept buying engrams from him, and after several greens a blue popped up, but I don't think the icon on the menu changed though. RNGesus at it again.
 
I can't even imagine how anyone can be successful using a scout rifle. I went into it today wanting to do all the queen's bounties, but it's clearly not happening. I cannot get headshot kills with a scout rifle. I can get headshots... But it takes 4-5 to put an enemy down. I'm just shooting, shooting, shooting, cleanest shots straight to their dome, but all they have to do is throw some auto rifle fire at me and I'm dead. It's a joke. I've completely ruined my Crucible record trying to do this bounty. Scout rifle is fucking garbage.

Scout rifles were the shit during alpha, I think they nerfed it in the final build. For headshots, I just stick to handguns.

You can definitely get rares from the Cryptarch. It happens to me from time to time.

I think I'm gonna pray to RNG tonight for some goddamn legendary boots. My feet hurt so much in these fucking rares I've been rocking forever.
 
So just for clarification, can you repeatedly do the Queen's Wrath Story Challenge, and get a legendary each time? Or do you have to reset it somehow (bounties)?
 
Did the nightstrike with my friends. It took us forever cause we had to hide in that cave under the entrance and I was in the middle reviving each time the left or right guy died. Took forever lol. But now we have bonus EXP for the rest of the week and a cool shiny blue flame head.

Also none of us got exotic, but we all get legendary. I got a legendary scout rifle, which promptly replaced the thorn lol

Friends got legendary assault rifle, which seemed shitty, so he is gonna destroy it. Third friend got a legendary fire machine gun which'll be useful as shit later on.

So nice to finally do one

I had a hotstreak doing that bounty on the big moon map at medium-long range. I think I managed to pick up 15+ headshot kills. But in most situations I agree.

Not sure if I should curse the people who told me I could tackle queens missions solo @ 24. Nahhh son. Nah. I barely made it past the initial entrance so I don't how y'all did that shit. Goddamn harpies and their elemental shield. And wtf why do primaries not do any sort of elemental damage?

Thankfully I did end up linking with some people in a fireteam. We did 2 missions and I got my first legendary drops (helm and chest plate). NOT engrams...but actual equipment, people! It was glorious. Wondering if I can go back for morrrrre.
 
Anyone else wish they kept that area where the queens ship is docked open all the time. Not only for the amazing views but think of all the dance parties you could have in that area (if only they phased in more players in the tower)
