Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Just caught up on this thread. So very happy at people's reactions to the new cards, and when you start experiencing all the new tech and features rolling out over the next year things are going to get even better. As a champion of Downsampling for the longest time, DSR is amazing to have out there, working on all monitors at all refresh rates, on Win 7 and 8.1, and without any technical knowledge required.

For the future, Crescent Bay/CV1 in VR SLI is something I personally cannot wait for, having spent a ton of time playing EVE Valkyrie, and experiencing the new Epic demo on DK2 with 980 SLI.

Great work Andy!

By the way, is there anything you can say about the issues that DSR seemingly causes with software like MSI Afterburner? (Flickering in some instances)

I had flickering while using DSR and Battlefield 4. I just figured it was a compatibility problem.

I haven't seen that myself. Is there a dedicated thread, perhaps on the Afterburner forum? If so I'll direct our guys to it, though I suspect it's more likely to be an application issue.

My Gigabyte Gaming G1 GTX970 should arrive this Friday. Can't wait :O

Should a order a second one? Just for fun? Playing on a 2560x1080 60Hz monitor.

Any plans for having DSR support >2x scaling factors (in each dimension)?

21:9 monitor?

::kills Faith steals monitor::
Nothing special, just a LG 29EB73 :)

We've noted that feedback.

BTW, did you see Coonrad's PC Gamer interview? :)

"This is the big boy corporate version of [GeDoSaTo]"

BTW, Andy, if you get them to allow this for all GPUs including Fermi, I will kiss you accross the internet.

Not sure if you want that though.

I haven't seen any specific thread on it. I just noticed the issue in a few games and then noticed that it only happens in combination with using DSR and Afterburner. I also contacted EVGA about it and they said:
Third party applications in combination with DSR can cause the described flickering issues.

Seems I am not the only one then.

Alright, so I installed my Asus GTX 970 (swapped it out for my old Gigabyte 670). Do I install anything other than Nvidia's drivers to, for instance, get it to use those silent cooling features?

/edit: also is the DSR global only? Can't seem to find it in the application specific settings.

Good to hear!

Yeah, Wes sent me a link to it.

I always said that the driver is the correct place to implement this, it makes lots of stuff much simpler. Some of the most complex/easy to break code in GeDoSaTo deals with OS <-> game translation. If you do it in the driver, that's completely superfluous, as you're "fooling" both the OS and the game at the same time. And you can do it on a level below any given 3D API, so you also get rid of those incompatibilities/complexity. It's so much cleaner.

"This is the big boy corporate version of [GeDoSaTo]" Accurate, but we have been working on this for some time, even before GeDoSaTo was released. Hopefully we can develop even more features, but like I've said before, Durante can always come work for NVIDIA to do it himself :)

Mine's not too much better, but I went against GAF's advice and bought a cheap case with not much in the way of options for cable management (an Antec 300). It also makes maintenance and moving things about a pain in the butt: when I changed out my PSU recently, I had to open up the fan mounts from the front in order to push in the GPU's power cables, and seating the 24-pin connector properly required me to do some weird, uncomfortable hand contortions.

So whenever people ask me for PC building advice, I tell them not to skimp on the case!

Heh, I've also got an Antec Three Hundred. It's a little bit of a pain to get around but I haven't had too many issues in general. If the GAF solution to cleaner/prettier airflow is "spend twice as much on a case as I normally do," I'm going to need more convincing.

(QUIET cases, on the other hand, I would definitely consider paying more for. So much fan noise, thanks in part to the four 120mm fans I have going and the blower fan on my 6950.)

If it were me, I would uninstall the AMD drivers, reboot to safe mode, wipe them with Driver Sweeper or whatever that great utility is called (it was from a GPU site, I forget which), then shut it off and make the hardware switch.

Either way you'll be fine. Worst case you can try to purge any residual AMD files afterwards if you don't get them all.

Thanks for the info. I'll search for that utility.

Looking at upgrading a user from a Geforce GTX 550 Ti. Which would you recommend for longevity? Almost pulled the trigger on a GTX 780 Ti a few weeks ago, but wanted to wait on these.

Also, from your experiences which brand do you recommend?

Single GPU? The Gigabyte gamer edition if your case fits it.

It's like the 670 all over again, but at a noticeably better price point.

It's an amazing card. Everyone at NVIDIA should be damn proud.

Durante locked behind an Nvidia paywall. :(

I've done several benchmarks [S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CoP, Stone Giant, AvP, DiRT 2, Just Cause 2, Lost Planet 2, PLA, Unigine Heaven 4.0, Unigine Valley, Hitman: Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, Metro LL, UE4.0 Elemental, FFXIV, 3D Mark] and the trend says that I've gained about 50% of performances*. I'm pretty satisfied!

Any word on when DSR might work with SLI configurations?

any ETA on VRdirect? Would like to play some more games on my DK2 :)

So many people up in arms about your cable management. Wonder how y'all would react to my case, I don't think it's much better.

That said: is it just me or is there a case fan at the BOTTOM of your case?

I have fans everywhere lol. There are actually 2 on the bottom or 3 I can't remember.

Anyone?

Works like a charm in Dark Souls 2, but I can imagine wanting to use different settings for different applications.

Ignorant question, but i haven't kept up with graphics cards in a couple of years. I'm gaming at 2560x1600p resolution. I'm currently rockin GTX680 2gb SLI. Would a single GTX 980 yield better or equal performance to my setup now? Has the jump from 680 to 980 been substantial enough that it would be the case?

I guess I can save up and get 980 in SLI but was just wondering. If it would be worse then I'll just wait till I have the money for both.

most people will point you to a 970 and I am pretty sure you will yeild better performance with just 1.

For myself I am rolling with x2 980s
I game on 2560x1440 also

Well, that makes me feel better about the insides of mine! I've got a bit of cable management going on, but not a massive amount. Wish I'd have got a modular power supply really, quite a bit of space is taken up by random wires I'm not using.

I have a modular power supply, but ended up using almost all the cables anyway (:lol).

You would probably see mixed results. On-paper, SLI 680 is still more powerful, but that doesn't always translate to real world results depending on the game. Worst case SLI scenarios, a 980 will probably be better. Best case SLI scenarios, your 680's will be better. vRAM limitations will still affect you with your 680's as well.

And there's other benefits to going with a single 980, including far, far less power draw and heat.

Is there any hope for my EVGA 970 ACX 1.0? Everyone keeps talking smack and Im wondering if i should send it back when it comes tomorrow for a blower or a different brand.

I bought straight from EVGA

I got this one. No issues after about 7 hours of gaming on it, no noticeable noise. Temps max around 70c, but that was me really pushing it on the heaven benchmark. While gaming it rarely goes over 50c. No complaints here

ManuelG on the visits forums confirmed that DSR is single GPU only so I'm not sure what you're seeing. I don't own the new cards to test, but it not working with SLI seems to be the official behavior right now.

A bit down in this thread on the forum is ManuelG's post.

Definitely working for me. Running Far Cry 3 in SLI 3840x2160 close to 60fps.

Edit: DSR setting is in global only indeed.

screenshot downsampled to 1440p, 90% usage on each GPU:

^Either Gigabyte, MSI or Asus seems to be the consensus.

I wouldn't be surprised if the fan stuff is controlled via BIOS, but I'm not sure if DSR would be controlled through GeForce Experience.

Yeah, looks like it, thanks.

/edit: pff forgot how terrible uplay was.

What's the likelihood of a 5-6GB model of the 980 being released in the next month or so? I have a 4K monitor and am worried that 4GB won't be enough.

Just ordered the Asus 970, expected to ship next week. Choice was mostly based on brand loyalty. Upgrading from a Radeon 6950 (softmodded to 70) and first nVidia in a looong time. Now the real wait for Witcher 3 begins

Gigabyte and Galax have good UK rma service. EVGA do too but their cards seem to be worth avoiding in the mean time.
I believe avoiding is the wrong advice. Basically they stuck with a 3 heat-pipe design to avoid coolers built especially for the DIE size but they are thick pipes. Therefore, only two pipes are needed to cover the chip. They also do not have idle shutdown like the competitors but are promising a bios update to accommodate this criticism.

http://www.reddit.com/user/TeamEVGA

Lazy re-use, ploy to buy ACX 2.0, etc...? Who knows and honestly who cares. Use your wallet on what you are comfortable with. If the extra $ is worth it to have small 3 pipe designs which may net you a few degrees improvement and not have to eye a bios update for idle shutoff, then that's perfectly reasonable. I personally stopped listening to most forum talk after buying hardware for heavy OC'ing over the course of a decade. 50% is accurate, 10% of that could affect you, and any slice of that is often not worth time/effort/cost.

My card is almost in my hands so I hope to add to the success stories later today. I had it shipped to my GF's office to avoid the tax and am lucky enough to have it carried back for me.
I'd go with the Gigabyte G1. It seems those are sporting cherry picked GPUs that will overclock among the best.
Not cherry picked but reported improved cooling system.
Yeah, that's what GAF does. Got crucified here as well. But it actually got me to work on it a bit which was quite fun...
Bah, cases are evil. Haven't used one for over a decade. Bench tables are the pricey way to go but DIY is even better. Completely removing air flow issues is liberating and custom cable management especially with DIY is the best of the best. #caseless

ArcheAge is completly out of whack, every texture is flickering and game seems slow as hell. Don't know if it's due to SLI or the new beta drivers.

Game doesn't seem good anyway but didn't expect that after waiting in queue for 2hours. Couldn't even check if it's due to some graphical settings since you have to restart the client for them to take effect, putting your ass back in the queue.
