i thought gamergate was about that digital video game website gamersgate. Next i'm going to find out DC puts out good comic books.

Justice League #32: Read like Johns' DC grocery list.

Is image the new vertigo? Seems like everyone is flocking to
Image now. I couldn't even tell you what vertigo has besides fables

It's just a matter of folks really wanting the creative freedom of writing whatever books they want with minimal editorial interference. While Marvel is pretty lax with their editorial policy you have to remember that it's still work for hire and they're telling other people's stories. After awhile you kind of tired of working within someone else's sandbox, plus image is giving out pretty healthy contracts at the moment.

You also have to factor in the explosion of TV/Movie deals that are happening right now. If a creator owned book gets picked up for a TV/Movie deal the writer/artist are basically going to make a decent amount even if it doesn't go into production and if it does they'll been sitting on some Kirkman money.

I am a bit disappointed that more people are not upset at Marvel for cowing and canceling the covers, but those tweets are rather dumb.

Anyway, good comics - I'm 3/4 through Hickman's FF run and I'm sure that this is a top 5 run for me, could even be no 1 maybe. Just reached the climax of the story (those Celestials has me gasping and excitedly showing the mrs pages for the whole run! So cool!) and I love it so much. It's a book about family and parenthood and it's so beautiful. Massive ideas, intricate puzzle-esque plotting and a pure beating heart as big as the galaxy. Definitely Hickman's most human story so far.
His FF and Avengers runs are fantastic but goddamit I wish Marvel would put out the tpb by reading order and not by series.

Juggling between Fantastic Four/FF or Avengers/New Avengers/Infinity is not the best reading experience. I get Hickman is writing it this way for the peeps who buy the singles and that's cool as I got a similar experience back when Moz was writing Bats but still...

That Spider-Woman cover was shitty though.

I enjoy Manara, I have some books of him right next to me. Good erotica is good.

But main Marvel comics starring a female aren't the place for that. They should kick Greg Land from doing the interiors though.

I had an exchange with one of the Marvel editors about this on twitter and they basically confirmed it without confirming.

It's the nature of the business and I get the feeling a lot of those guys really want to do creator owned work at the moment and will eventually be back at Marvel.

I imagine he's much happier writing Sex Criminals and Ody-C and Casanova over Inhuman.

Also, maybe he can get some DC work in now?

You know what I'd like to see DC do? Take those 52 universes they keep forgetting they have and ramp that shit back up to infinite. Then tell the shit out of those stories. Go fucking nuts. I don't actually mind the nu-52 universe these days so much. It has issues and I don't like some of the decisions they made but it's not terrible. Just new.

What I wish they'd stop doing is cockteasing multiverse stuff and then never delivering and forgetting all about it for the next few years.

Just get Pre-52 Booster and Rip back. 52 weekly issues and they'll fix it up good as new.

Not about quality to be honest, not about if I liked it or you liked it.
It is about a company being forced to change something because a vocal group decided that they did not like it and made the choice for everyone.
It was not even the main cover, it was a variant.
If they did not like it, they did not have to buy it they could have bought the original cover.
The variant would not have been on sale at 7-11 or Barnes and Nobel, it would have been at the comic shop. But a group of people said "No, we will take away your right to choose which cover you want because we find offense with it even though we have a completely viable other option to get it".

Like I told someone else, I expect this issue of Spider Woman to be the biggest selling book of the year because I am sure all of these concerned vocal people have every intention of buying the book right? They would not just be stepping up and using this to further an agenda never really having any intention of buying the book in the first place...right?

Oh boy, always this argument with the vocal minority...

I disagree. I believe that it was a cover that happened to, like the Teen Titans one, come to symbolize one of the areas that comics could use some modernization (depictions of females). Marvel has made considerable strides to appeal to females and being seen as proactive is probably a good move for them.

Man totally, it must be mad to only be reading one of those books through without all the other chapters. It's one story, it should be collected as such. Glad I'm reading it in the singles. I've just done the bit in FF where there's the big battle in New York and the kids are elsewhere with the Celestials and I loved the back and forth between the chapters, but reading just FF would be super disjointed I think.

Maybe he's handled it a little better for trade readers with Avengers though, the main book is fairly self contained (until now where I guess lots of people are all WUT) and New Avengers is there adding context and allowing him to layer in motivations and long-game plotting without cluttering the Superhero book that Avengers does quite well at being.

He's just the shit, basically. So impressed with him lately.

Question - what's the best place to go to look for older comics outside of Amazon or rummaging through the stacks at the local comic store? Trying to track down a copy of Punisher MAX vol 3, and actually having a tough time tracking one down that isn't overpriced. Any thoughts on where I should be looking?

InStockTrades is the way to go.

Unfortunately, Punisher MAX vol 4 is the one that's absolutely impossible to find for an okay price.

Hickman is probably one of the best writers in comics at the moment but his writing is more long term story telling and doesn't lend itself to month to month reading. It's best read when you have all of it laid out and easily accessible.

Ebay is not terrible, message the person and try to get extra pics and pay attention to feedback.

Didn't know about this site, just what I was looking for. Was always curious why that volume in particular seemed so hard to find, or was otherwise noticeably more expensive.

Good thought. I did peruse ebay and saw a few copies for sale, always been leery about going that route. Still good to know it's an option however.

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!

Hickman just went in this with full force in New Avengers #24, the Cabal is brutal and insane and even Terrax acknowledges this. What happened with
Wakanda
? And Doom reveals that he's working with
Molecule Man
??
I had trouble reading the conversation Terrax, Corvus and
Xavier
had, not because of comprehension but because it was really demented. What a bunch of savages. I felt a little sorry for Namor when Doom refused to help him with the Cabal, but when I read what they were doing handling the Incursion, I just thought: "Namor, you done fucked up big time."

I agree with you. It is just a variant cover and I thought it looked pretty good. Overly sexy for sure, but welcome to comics.

New Avengers #24

Yoooooooo another eight months from now. But hell, it was freaking awesome. The Cabal is insane.
I'm still reeling from that shit.

The Wakanda part kind of blew my mind
So apparently, the free world gave Wakanda away to Thanos and his pals so they'd stop incursions by blowing other earths up?

I'm really curious to see how we reached that point. My best guess is that the transparency Cap wanted ended up biting him in the ass. Because most people would react like Namor did.

Also, fucking Doom. Hickman writes an awesome Doom.

Now that Spiderman: Learning to Crawl is over, I can officially say it was a waste of time, talent (of the artist) and my money. It was a story which did not need to be told.

Ya know, I really had high hopes for this thing. HUGE fan of Slott/Templeton's "Spider-Man/Human Torch: I'm With Stupid" mini-series, one of my top 3 favorite Spidey comics, one of my favorite comics period. This seemed like it was going down the same route, a nostalgic look behind with Slott's love of the Marvel Universe and Ramon Perez' is a fantastic artist doing some really cool stuff, like how he uses the Ditko 9 panel grid to break up beats and moments of his larger, more modern-day storytelling pages.

It just...never came together. Never seemed to have much of a point at all. A big ball of nothing, hot air, poof.

Aint been a good year for Slott's Spider-Man, I'll tell you that

Harley Quinn Future's End #1. Meh. I guess that was an issue. Getting a bit tired of Harley saying something along the lines of holey moley every second line. Also Holy shit this was a text heavy issue. Joker didn't feel like Joker to me. It didn't feel believable to me at all. The art was good to decent as usual. Bit let down by this issue. It was fine but I was expecting better :(

Did you pick up the Catwoman issue? It's not written by Nocenti, so it was safe enough for me to purchase.

Good god,,, my pull list next week is over $60. I need to get this under control lol

I'm looking at about $40 myself, even if I skip a few of the sub-par books. Early in the year, there was one week I had $100 worth of pulls, I shit you not.

Rat Queens next week! HHHHNNNNGGGGGG

Next i'm going to find out DC puts out good comic books.

There are a few diamonds here and there.

Looks like the Humble Valiant Bundle updated; the BTA now includes vol. 3 of Archer & Armstrong, Quantum & Woody, Bloodshot, Shadowman, X-O Manowar and Harbinger.

I picked this up since I've never read any Valiant stuff; I'm pretty interested but it adds a lot to my already huge backlog.

Is image the new vertigo? Seems like everyone is flocking to
Image now. I couldn't even tell you what vertigo has besides fables

Because Image doesn't retain ownership of any properties. Everything is creator-owned, so creators have been flocking to Image for a while. Brubaker / Philips even signed an exclusive deal.

Vertigo still does have American Vampire, but a lot of their new stuff seems to be lacking. I thought The Names #1 was decent, but I don't know if I'll be in for the whole series.

I decided not to as I am trying to cut down on books plus I really hate that art. I'll be back in next month though.

So did you hear that the Scratch and Sniff Harley issue is going to smell like leather and pot* among other things? The leather smell will put us even closer to a Harley / Sunstone crossover!

*The pot smell is apparently only going to be in the US edition.

New Avengers is just...mind blowing and depressing at the same time. It sucks to think that this isn't an alternative future-this is really going to happen.

That's not a very good welcome, which is why it's gone.

Admittedly I am very new to comics, but from my newbie perspective that variant cover isn't anything "worse" than I have seen White Queen, Medusa or Gamorra's asses drawn the past few months. If it were the main cover sure I can see the issue. But it was a sexy variant of a sexy hero so I don't see the problem. At least I still have Zenescope!

YES! We can will this into existence.

We are getting
fresh cut grass smell right?

If it's Harley
smoking weed I am sure Ivy can't be too happy about it.

Can never be too sure on them spoilers

Scratch and sniff 3d covers will be the end of the comics industry.

the spider-woman cover isn't gone though, is it? just the next two manara variants; that one still comes out.

Oh, you are right. Manara's words after this probably had a lot to do with it then.

I don't like that other shit either, but you make progress where you can.

Sweet.. all my Futures End books shipped from DCBS

I did pretty good, the only one I bought (that I didn't order from DCBS for 40% off) is the Booster Gold.
There are a couple I may check out I didn't order, if they're at my lcs for awhile
