I really liked Log Horizon as well, though I stopped watching it about halfway through because I wanted to wait for more episodes to be out to marathon. Kyoukai no Horizon, god I had no damn clue what the hell was going on in that show in the first five episodes or so, but I heard that this is common and I have been meaning to re-watch it. I totally agree on your points though where I like the idea of multiple pairings as opposed to MC harem and every other male cast can go cry in the corner.
Can't blame you about the Kyoukai no Horizon part, since I had to do a lot of reading before watching the show. It was base on a chain of light novel, and the world setting is built gradually on previous Kawakami's works, so I was worrying that why would they choose Horizon to make an anime adaption. As I was afraid, the first 3 eps are pretty much info dump about the world setting, so not many people could get into it. It's the world setting keeps me from abandoning the show, and then the characters humors me through out all their journey.
As you can see, only the bold parts was made into anime. The previous novel, Owari no Chronicle, where pretty much all the world setting was built/explained, are below and just skipped altogether.
I know this is off topic, but is Log Horizon like SAO? It seems to sound like it is, so it might be cool to check out

.
Remember, the anime is low budget, so don't expect it to be something flashy like SAO. The charming point of that show is it's kinda heavy on the politic side, since people are "moved" into the MMO world, and they have to adapt to live there, without idea how to return to their former world. People don't disappear permanently when they die. They are revived at the church instead, but that doesn't mean life is without danger since they raise a lot of problems in human society, when people have power in their hand and they have no goal for their life in an MMO. They also have to deal with NPC, since the world is a living one with established hierarchy, and you can't really overlook them just because you are stronger than them. A note that while Adventure (how they call players) can't permanent die in this world, monster is also in the same state, but NPC is not. If they die, they disappear forever. That also raise a lot of different treatment between NPC and players on different cities.
Also, the characters are lovable, have their own love interest, and acting great as supporting cast with their own distinguished characteristic. It's more like "ensemble cast" in a plot driven story, not character driven as in you see various parts of the world under different people's perspective, and the world is pretty expand if you have MMO knowledge, since the author did pretty well in establishing various MMO culture for different servers in that world. The main characters are just a guys with deep knowledge about game and know how to utilize everything. He's not overpowered in any sense, mind you. Alone he's suckass, since his class is mainly supporting, and people don't flock around him like Kirito. Even after everything he did, only a small amount of people recognize his contribution since he's mostly working behind the scene.
If it's possible, I would recommend reading the light novel, but I guess that's kinda too much so the anime is enough entry.
