Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor | Review Thread - Welcome to Middle Earf

Yeah Monolith are great but I was still skeptical because of their last few games.

What last few games? They created Condemned 2 and F.E.A.R. 2 in terms of good quality based titles.

Other then that they had another team create an Arcade title and some half-ass attempt on an MMO for Lord of The Rings while the more talented crew started work on this game.

Wow, I was planning to get this anyway but the reviews are way beyond anything I expected it to get. Very excited for it now.

Turbine made the MMO and it was (is?) pretty great.

Well the devs have mentioned that if you want to, you can go gun for a chief right out the gate and try to take them down. I mean it may be possible, but you can kinda set your own difficulty based on how you play and approach things. From what I remember, the game has no difficulty and it's up to the player to go with whatever route they're most comfortable with.
Yea that's the trap I see a lot of RPGs falling into. The problem happens when you both like to explore to the fullest and want a challenge. Part of the fun of RPGs for me is building up to be stronger. So I tend to take extra side mission and anything else in order to build up my power. Then I find that the game has become too easy and I have to force myself to not do missions in order not to over level myself.

I want to have to use the Nemesis system to the fullest in order to defeat enemies. I don't want to be put into the situation where I'm intentionally avoiding it in order to select the appropriate difficulty for myself. I'd like the game to have the following difficulties:

  • Easy: You can complete the game if you at least pay attention and make use of the systems a little bit
  • Normal: All systems must be use. However encounters can be made much easier with extra planning. For example, more use of the Nemesis systems can make the combat a lot easier.
  • Expert: All systems (upgrades, Nemesis, combat, exploration...) must be use with competence. The average encounter is setup to assume that the player has prepared for it and can perform well in combat.

Can someone tell me if this actually like an open world rpg (lots of big areas/fields to explore, towns to got to etc)?
More of an open world action game with RPG progression. No towns, few non-hostile NPCs. Main draw of the game is combat and enemy manipulation, and the world seems to be fully utilised for that end.

That's pretty disingenuous considering both those games were pretty much complete ass compared to their predecessors in essentially every way, even if they were okay games on their own terms. So no, it's not a leap to suggest people would be skeptical of their newest outing.

Lol wut? I always thought this was gonna another one of those 7/10 games. Guess I'll have to look into it.

Were they really? I genuinely thought that Condemned 2 was loved by allot of people.

F.E.A.R. 2 I can agree with but it was nowhere near a bad game.

A lot of people like the bear stage in Condemned 2...and basically nothing else. Hell one of the devs on the game posts here and even admitted the game was borked from day 0 due to development issues stemming from budgetary problems revolving around splitting the budget to force in a multiplayer mode no one cared about nor wanted.

never really followed it until recently, was it that bad?
Actually I thought the game looked pretty good with its initial reveal. The only issue was that people thought that the Nemesis system would be more hype than reality so didn't take it seriously. It really didn't help that the game really came out of nowhere so it felt like a too good to be true situation.

The nemesis system sounds seriously awesome.

I was kind of on the fence (not a huge fan of LotR), but reviews + Destiny being an utter disappointment means I'll probably pick this up day one.

I could see this being a pretty common reaction for many.

Dat Destructoid score bringing it down. :(

Fuck it. Gonna go watch Fellowship.
I just watched all 5 movies from Peter Jackson and I may just do it again and really pay attention to names and events. People may not like the pace of the movies but damn if they aren't beautiful and scored incredibly well.

I don't know anything about the reviewer or the quality of Destructoid reviews or whatever the hell, but reading his review actually acknowledges the fears that I had for the game. Hearing that the complexity of the system is actual rather simple and repetitive is not entirely surprising, and it's something I've experienced in many games. Ultimately it just tempers my expectations. I don't want to say anything more before I play it myself, but ultimately it's still probably going to meet or exceed what I thought it would be.

I am such an easy prey to hype, last time DestinyGaf hyped me up for Destiny, even though I saw what they game was in and through in beta and alpha. This time it's Shadow of Mordor. If I won't like it, I will blame Gaf.

that preload button is the work of the devil, I tell ya

I went instantly the same route as you did upon reading the first post, but finally managed to get myself to download the titanfall latest dlc instead. this time.
reviews are surprisingly good, kudos to all involved. I was thinking i dont care for this game, now my only problem is to find time for it.

This is amazing. wake up to find the hype is real haha
at least for reviews

I am very excited to see what the game offers, and experience what it looks like fun combat and an interesting nemesis system.

Could it be these guys got the PC port of it right? all the options for tweaking the game seem awesome. I am hyped :D

I'd say Destiny disappointment is factoring in for me. I liked Destiny, but it wasn't worth getting the Digital Guardian Edition as I did ( thankfully for a discount). It just didn't have the longevity and character that Reach had, so it was a Bungie disappointment I didn't see coming from the Alpha and Beta.

This game seems to have come from nowhere with close to the best response of any retail title this gen has seen. That's impressive.

The other reviews say it is excellent and pushes forward game design standards for the industry. The issue in the review was one that does not necessarily have to have played the way for him, nor is there a guarantee other players will even get the chance to face an issue like that thanks to some randomness and choice tactics.

Not a port. They said it was developed as it's own simultaneous version, rather than retooled from completed console material.
