Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor | Review Thread - Welcome to Middle Earf

Fuck yeah. Glad I haven't lost my ability to judge games without getting hands on.

Gonna pick up a PS4 copy on sale at the end of the year.
 
If only Forza didn't come out on the same goddamn day. I'll pick it up in October. It'll probably drop to $40 by then anyway.
 
Kind of love seeing both Middle Earth and Forza outpacing a majority of the big blockbuster games reeleased this year.

Can't wait to play it.
 
I really want to jump on this digitally so I can get it early (UK gaffer using US XB store) however I think I'll hold on to my amazon preorder as you get 2 extra runes and it's the same price (£37 on XB1).

Unless anything can confirm the runes are unlockable in the game, if so I'll jump on the digital preorder.

Guardians of Middle-earth, Gotham City Imposters and LotR: War in the North all landed with a collective "meh", but I wouldn't consider any of them to be straight-up bad games (assuming that's what you mean by "dud"). As you said, most of WB Interactive's output has been very very good over the last few years. They've got some great franchises under their belt (Arkham, LEGO, Mortal Kombat, Scribblenauts, Injustice, and now Shadow of Mordor).

Coming up, they're the ones publishing The Witcher 3, Mad Max, and Dyling Light - they're doing very well for themselves.

This is what I'm thinking. I just preloaded FH2 last night on the Xbone, so no taking that back and buying this instead.

Still though, even though I was excited about it i felt like the hype with this had been so low. Glad to see they were able to live up to everything they wanted to do.
 
What the... how does WB Games keep making surprise hits like this? Expected this to be a mediocre AC/Batman knockoff worth buying in a Steam sale after a few months at best, and now it has a Metacritic of almost 90%?

Seems like Wolfenstein has a rival for underdog of the year. I'm not that big of a LOTR fan but these reviews are making me seriously consider buying the game day one.

WB Games is led by Martin Tremblay, who is barely known. He was the CEO of Ubisoft Montreal from 2000 to 2006, when the studio created Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield and Assassin's Creed (first AC was released after he left).

I'm not saying Tremblay is a genius or that he was/is responsible for everything at Ubisoft Montreal or WB Games, but his his track record clearly proves he is doing something right.

Watch the Extended Editions. Seriously, they may be significantly longer, but they provide a much better presentation of Tolkien's story.
 
So when do we know if XB1 and PS4 are equals in quality? I have a lot more XB1 credit (thanks Gamestop!) than PS4 credit and would like to buy on XB1, but if it's 900p on XB1 vs 1080p on PS4.... I'll go PS4.

WB Games have been great lately, I even found lollipop chainsaw to be fun. 😀

Guardians of Middle Earth was seriously a good game. Only with friends, though.
 
I try to preorder on amazon, and it says I need to choose one day shipping to get it on release day, and I got prime. Anyone else getting that?

How are Amazon with launch day deliveries with free postage? Any idea? I'll order it
 
IGN review lists "unexciting campaign missions" as its only negative but gave it a 9.3. I know its IGN but that seems like a pretty big part of any game.

Edit - Okay, so other people have noticed this happening elsewhere. Will wait for GAF impressions.

The fuck? I was expecting something more in the 6.5/7 tier.
Didn't look like this game had much beyond the nemesis system.

I'll look into some reviews then.

Well I have Amazon prime but to be honest I've never had a problem with them (even before I went prime). I know others have but they have always been on time for me.

From what I've read, the story is good, but some of the actual gameplay missions are unexciting. Seems like the nemesis system and other things in play make up for it? We will see!

Well they only got the PS4 and PC version to test (atleast ign said that last night).
PS4 is 1080p and supposedly 60fps (confirmed by the guy streaming yesterday) so the only unknown is the XB1 version.
 
Waiting for a PC specific review, but I'll probably get this game either way at this point.

I can't believe a LotR game is being reviewed this well.

Just imagine the follow up with different characters, a more fleshed out plot, bigger budget = true LOTR music score, etc. The possibilities are endless. Really glad they found a way to make this franchise work. I have no doubt I will enjoy this game when it comes out.
