New Driveclub gameplay

Okay, dammit. I now have a PS+ account and i preordered the game. What is happening??!!
A digital copy of a game where you drive around in circles in virtual cars without anything spectacular happening. I'm officially a graphics whore.

In return i expect a spectacular Motorstorm-esque game next Evolution!!!!!!!!!!

Well done.

The game has alot going for it right now.

  • First exclusive racer on the PS4
  • Fantastic visuals
  • Ps plus version
Also if you look on the ps4 of the game. You see this graph that shows the free content updates along with the season pass updates. So you're gonna get a lot of content after launch.

I hope you can adjust the POV, would love to slightly see the side of my car in the mirror. (Its how I have my real car set up). Visually, I also think it will add to the sense of speed, which is already stellar.

It'll be alright aside from being a longtime Plus sub I actually preordered DC based on graphics. Sure Plus version is nice but I need to see all the pretty places.

At this point, Im really not concerned at all with the visuals. Just hope the game is fun.

What do you consider fun in a racing game? If you have to have unorthodox stuff to create fun like flying through farm fences, don't look here.

This is PGR or Gran Turismo or Ridge Racer. Standard pure racing.

If just racing is fun to you then you know what to expect already just within a very polished, beautiful, great sounding package. If you need off-road madness with spectacular wrecks then I doubt you get much interest out of this.

Thankfully for that type of racing The Crew is coming out so you get that fix as well

That's the weirdest part for me too. I want to drive around in these gorgeous surroundings in non jagged cars with great lighting, great sound, etc.
Mostly the surroundings. I have no doubt the actual driving part will bore me to death after a few days (maybe hours). But maybe i will be hooked for months. It's just all so well crafted and i love that they delayed the game to make it exactly like they wanted.

You know.. when people say they hope they find it fun, that doesn't necessarily mean they're looking for an open world racer, or a Burnout, or a Mario Kart or whatever.

Those three games you listed are nothing like each other, and many people that like one of them, would not like the other 2. Assuming someone will enjoy Driveclub because they enjoyed Ridge Racer is kinda ridiculous.

I hate to be honest, and I know this is tough to hear, but here are some of my concerns about Driveclub. Evolution really dropped the ball on DRIVCLUB
I hope I am doing this right :p

1. The AI is too predictable. When I look far ahead, I see where my opponent is, and I can decide to go left or right. I can plan how I want to pass him. When I look at my rear view mirror, I can see if they are approaching me on my left or right, and move accordingly to block them. A real racing game like Pole Position at the arcades or on the Atari 2600 has your opponents pop up just a few frames ahead of you. With this unpredictable AI, it really challenges your twitch fibers, leaving you only a split second to decide how you want to pass them. Some may call this unfair, I call this a real racing challenge.

2. Driveclub restricts the direction you are going to go. I dont look at it like corridor racing, this is like line queue racing. It resembles waiting in line for your favorite amusement park ride, except you are allowed to pass or line jump. The game funnels you towards your destination, which instead of being some fun ride or to pick up a preorder at a Midnight Launch, you reach a finish line. Pretty anticlimatic. At least in a game like Burnout Paradise, I jump the line queue and get to the end however I want, flipping my finger at the rest being herded like sheep.

3. The Draw Distance and course sizes are too shallow. A true classic racing game like Rad Racer on NES shows a city so far off into the distance, you can race towards it for nearly 5 minutes, and never get any closer to it. Showing off this massive world that Driveclub simply cannot duplicate.

4. The Car Handling restricts itself to what it feels like on 4 wheels. So boring, I drive 35 MPH every day to work and back. I know what it feels like to drive on 4 wheels. At least with a game like Wipeout, they challenge physics, allowing me to be amazed by the wonderment of anti gravitational racing. Come on Revolution, remove the wheels, let these cars float and challenge what most racing games have become, driving on 4 wheels. And I didn't even get to weapons, which I can save for my impressions after the game releases. I dont see any guns or missiles on the cars like Wipeout has.

5. And to piggyback point 4, Driveclub restricts you to 4 wheels. A game like MOTO GP allows me to race motorcycles. Driveclub doesn't do this. Wave Racer lets me abandon the open road to hop on a jet ski and race the unpredictable waters of a colorful fictional world filled with rainbows and dolphins. On Driveclub, you only get to look at the water, while flying past it at fantastic senses of speed. What fun is that? Where are the jet skis?

6. Driveclub makes me turn on the music, since it is turned off by default. You have this amazing hit "How Fast Do You Wanna Go?" a song I sing on the way to work, in the shower, while cooking dinner. I want that song to play all the time. Games in the NFS series have the music on by default, not challenging me to navigate menus to hear the music blaring while I race. Do you really want to hear some of the most realistic car audio ever recorded instead of "How Fast Do You Wanna Go?"

7. Driveclub's interior car view is too stale. Twisted Metal 1's interior car view on PSOne showed driver character. Sure its not a racing game, but you drive cars in it. The Taxi had fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror, there was junk all over the dash. You mean to tell me someone is going to buy a $500,000 car, race around, and not have one empty Slim Jim package laying on the dash? Racer car drivers are people too.

If only DRIVECLUB was more like NFS, Wipeout, Pole Position, Rad Racer, Moto GP, Twisted Metal 1, Burnout, & Wave Racer, all wrapped up into one. Then, it could be a true racer, a real "next gen" racing contender.
/s I am so hyped for this game, just as it is.

You must be outta your mind

I wasn't going for outright similarity. But making the point that those 3 games stay on the pavement. Besides GTs rally mode that appears every so often.

My point was if you can have fun in a racing game while staying on the pavement the whole time and just flat racing without anything else going on, your good to go here. Now if the controls suck or the AI is dumb or the online is broken that could throw a wrench into the wheels

I really have a feeling that the 6v6 team based racing could be where this game shines. Just hope the infrastructure is solid so there is little lag. There is nothin better then going online and actually having a cheap free, solid race

jayonfirmed that he does not know who produced these videos. So said:
Not sure why an Oct. 7 embargo is that scary since they are giving the PS+ version free. That can't be that worried about customers knowing what they are getting.

I was going to let the downsampled thing sit and wait it out, since the game is so close to release, but there are couple of things that are bugging me.

I think Rushy already confirmed that he does not know who produced these videos. So, these are produced by third party. A third party (website?) who does not have any vested interested in the commercial performance of this game apparently produced supersampled videos (which cannot be easy for third party to do for a console game) and proceeded to post compressed version on the youtube! Where is the logic in that?

He doesn't know who produced that video (it's clearly edited by a non-English publication), but the footage they used in it includes final game footage. Whether that means they used some B-roll and some opening into video, doesn't mean it isn't final build or that Rushy helped that publication put it together.

Yea, I just don't think anyone that's saying "I hope the gameplay is fun" is unaware of the fact that it's standard racing fare. They're just hoping that it does that well. I guess I found your post to just be a bit reductionist, like if someone was to wonder if they're gonna like BlazBlue, and then someone responded with something along the lines of "If you want Smash Bros then look elsewhere. This is Street Fighter, or Mortal Kombat or Virtua Fighter". Chances are they already know it's not like Smash Bros, but that's not going to prevent them disliking it whilst liking Virtua Fighter.

if you search twitter for #EGX #Driveclub you can find some positive recent tweets and a couple of negative ones as well. The only negative one with any substance behind it was a criticism that it was too much about accumulating points, and someone saying they didn't like the 30fps.

Seems that the game is not going to please everyone automatically no matter how great the graphics are -- it would be a miracle if it did.

Def be driving in cockpit mode. If you stare at the tires the cars look like they are hovering. It's really noticeable when the back tires go on and off the pavement. I hope theres a feeling of weight while driving.

is driveclub really pushing a day-one embargo? Haven't the press had it for several days?

Yeah I don't get this, the game went gold a while ago, they should have their review copies with plenty of time.

As for other Sony 1st party games - TLOU:R and Killzone: SF had their reviews up early. Though Infamous: Second Son was a release day embargo, if I recall correctly. Though SP was trying to keep some of the extra powers a secret, so that kind of explains that one. Seems odd to hold the reviews for Driveclub, to me.

Is it the weekend before? I think Sony tends to want reviews close to launch so people can go buy the game, and less advertising costs. It's rarely a conspiracy to hide bad scores.

I agree, but a couple people in this thread suggested that it is actually release day (the 7th).

IMO weekend reviews would be perfect, build a bunch of buzz then release it a few days later.

I already spoke to a friend or two about taking part in the Club aspect so I'm fully committed to getting good. Even if it's the first racer I've owned since a PS2 NFS game.

You've never heard the saying 'Red sky at night, farmers delight'?

SAILOR'S DELIGHT.

farmer. pffft.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_sky_at_morning

It appears to be everything but farmers

Carry on.

#DRIVECLUB seems to be getting pretty good impressions in the #EGX thread.

HEY!! It's the first thing I learnt about the weather. AND I SHOULD KNOW!

Though it's definitely shepherd in the saying. Shepherds getting all the glory.

Except TLOUR was a remaster, Killzone Shadow Fall was a launch title needed to convince buyers and also Sony gave retailers permission to sell early. Not sure any of these are good comparisons.

Ok, because i am hearing some potential BS lately, and since I can't search the entire thread and see if this has been answered, please indulge me.

What I am hearing is that supposedly (this is insane I know) this particular spanish video is from a b roll footage available only for journalists here on this site: http://thecall.software.eu.playstation.com/

It needs journalist code, so don't bother checking it out.

So what they say is that this footage is not actual in game quality of the graphics. They claim that graphics are the same as the beta version with a few tiny upgrades. I personally find this ridiculous, and completely illogical as I don't imagine devs spending so much time making bullvideos of the game.

But for the sake of good order, I would love if there is some actual proof to present to this "claim".

Yeah I don't get this, the game went gold a while ago, they should have their review copies with plenty of time.

Review embargoes are never about giving reviewers time. It's about controlling the message. It's a practice borne out of pure corporate self interest. The fact that it went gold early is irrelevant.

It's pretty anti-consumer. Wish such a thing never existed, but it is what it is. Their game, their rules.

It's ridiculous that console racers still don't have fully customizable gameplay cameras - we should be able to use the free camera and lock in our preferred viewpoint, adjust FOV, etc.

Get it sorted Rushy.

I was sort of hoping that was in, it should be standard by now.

The colour difference here is due to the time of day/lighting, right?

I really love how this game looks when it's darker/muted/gray. That weather gif with the rain is truly the best thing I've seen, and it's mostly because of the colour/grayness.

Such an amazing visual variety

I love that they have a proper hood cam, but damn those refections are excessive.

Man, there are going to be meltdowns on gaf when reviews hit.

It's been hyped to the point where no score will please fans. It will be madness I tell you.

I'm waiting for the usual IGN "It does nothing new" review, right before giving the next COD a 10/10.
Probably true.

:(

It's impossible any journalist to have a review ready yet.
One of the most important part of the game is still closed to them, online mode.

At first I was about to post a rebuttal comment to Jett earlier in the thread when he claimed the game was supersampled.

I actually agree with him, the shit looks supersampled. ON THE CHANCE I AM WRONG, if it is real - than Evolution Studios has become the technical authority on racing games.

Perhaps we can all learn not to be so harsh on games still early in development.

lol no

If I knew the game was going to be delayed literally an entire year, I wouldn't have been as harsh.

One year delays aren't exactly common.
