Tekken 7 - Offscreen videos

So Heihachi has a normal move that has super armor, he seems to have glowed gold when hit and took 2 hits. So maybe instead of the invincibility on moves from TR, they implemented super armor instead as a compromise to have "specials".

It's in the official pdf they released, they're called power crush moves.

Graphics do slowly get upgraded, what is most striking though is they don't seem to have updated the animations since Tekken 1.

That's not a tombstone. That's this.

Wow, thanks for the clarification. That looks so similar to a tombstone. I can't even tell in the King rageart video if he's aiming for the head while slamming the opponent or doing a body slam (like in the video you linked).

No problem, boss.

On a side note, in an attempt to make you mad jelly, I'm playing Smash on my 3DS right now. :p

Hahaha. I got to play it on 3DS a little bit. It looks REAL good but the controls were not cutting it for me. I need that GC controller. Can't wait for Wii U version.

Are you liking the game so far? Or not?

Well I basically just unwrapped it, so I have no opinion yet...

Sorta like how people shouldn't have an opinion on things like supers in Tekken when we barely even know how it works mechanically!

HAH!

Ah, cool. Hope you enjoy it.

And I pretty much have been saying that from the moment this game's gameplay got revealed to hold the boat. If the mechanic sucks, the people playing the game will provide feedback and they will adjust things accordingly. That's why it's a location test. But some people have already made the decision to not buy this game, lol (based on posts in this very thread and in other threads).

I was really looking forward to Tekken 7, thinking they were being so hush-hush about it because they were going to make some completely drastic changes. As someone who has only dabbled in the series, this looks exactly the same as the last several games and I find that uninteresting. I really wanted a next-gen 3D fighter to be excited about. :(

They've added ragearts, power moves, took out bound and added new "flop" moves, completely altered the red smudges with sparks, made CHs easy to detect, and added some great visual flair and you're saying it's the same as the last Tekken's? The only thing that's the same is the art design. This game is not going to play similar to or anything like TTT2, T6, or any previous Tekken games based on the changes we've already seen.

He's saying that despite that the game is still mostly the same as a whole.

You don't need to speak on his behalf. Let him say what he wants to say.

Let's also ignore the drastic changes to the wakeup system and the movement.

Forget this, I'm not starting another debate.

Oh that wasn't guided towards you. That was just my attempt at cleverly getting back to the thread topic, while taking a pot shot at certain people.

I think the Tekken team is doing just fine. If they add a couple more new characters and bring back the fairly new characters with some nerfs, the game will be fine.

The 10 year old art assets are place holder right? Because I can't stand their lack of evolution of character art. SF has an excuse of being cartoony/hyper-realistic and upgrading their sprites over the years. With Tekken, I'm seeing the same models and same lifeless cg art. It's getting pathetic.

I think Tekken 7 could work without any of the Tekken 1-2 cast. I've grown to love the entire cast, but it would be interesting to let the veteran cast rest until Tekken 8.

The way they're framing it, this may be the last game with the vet cast which is why i figured this game wouldn't be such a big ass update.

Except that they already advertised it as the end of the Mishima saga, so it very much can't work without a large portion of the T1 and T2 cast.

What happened to the other thread? Closed before the stream even started? Wat.

If you're talking about the character portraits, they're placeholders. And they're not 10 years old. They're from Tag 2.

Street Fighter doesn't get a free pass for being cartoony. lol.

I'm talking about the models and artwork. Maybe because I don't play SF, but the characters wearing the same outfits doesn't bother me when I used to read gaming mags because the look of the game/sprites were different. Tekken has the same visual style with the same, yes, 10 year old looks/models (Everyone is in their Tekken 5 get-up) from 2004.

* Those sparks on the heavy-damage attacks have to be toned down. Totally distracting.

* Haven't heard of the Claudio guy before, but he seems rather boring. Don't we have enough of these power-hitters in the lineup already?

* Was the middle-eastern character MIA at this event?

* Katerina seems alright, but doesn't seem to move much like the videos I've seen of her martial art (forgot the name).

* Law's animations make him seem a lot more fluid and Bruce Lee-like now. Historically he always moved pretty stiffly.

* I do really like the slo-mo finishes on KO moves.

You listed a bunch of things that advanced players will notice, and barely anything that novice/casuals will.

I don't think you understand how 3D modeling works. Just like SF updated its sprites, Tekken updates its character models with higher polygon counts and improved textures in every sequel.

Harada wants each character to have their own iconic look look that never changes. Literally EVERY other fighting game in existence does the same thing.

Does anyone ever complain? Nope.

The animations were all changed in 6.

I had to log in for the first time in maybe a year to say that this is simply untrue.

Take a look at King's chains. Some of these animations haven't been changed since Tekken 5. You can see for yourself. Watch during King's Bridge in particular. Look at the way Mokujin's head moves, for example. Look at his arm positions. Exactly the same.
T5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUc5gczNG44#t=1m23s
TTT2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_GbSWGrcbo#t=7m44s

And, many knockdown/juggle animations, various stun animations, and universal things are decades old. So, yeah, there is still some PS1 era animation in the game.

Also, I'd like to say that technological advances like lighting and shading and crap are nice and all...but when people say that it looks like T6 or TTT2 they aren't just talking about "shinier, spiffier models" or "special effects". They're talking about ART DIRECTION, which hasn't changed since Tekken 5. They're talking about the flow and pace of the fighting which hasn't changed in ages. They're talking about the same old characters doing the same old moves, on the same old people. I don't care how shaky your camera is...you would still be able to tell the difference between SF1, SF2, SF3, SF Alpha, and SF4. Heck, you could easily tell the difference between TTT1 and T4 on a potato phone stream. The art direction, style, and pace of those games are completely different.

THAT'S what people mean when they say it "looks like T6 or TTT2" so far.

I don't think you understand how 3D modeling works. Just like SF updated its sprites, Tekken updates its character models with higher polygon counts and improved textures in every sequel.

I understand how it works.

Unlike sprites, when you update a model, you don't necessarily have to update the ANIMATION.

However, when you make new sprites, you HAVE to make new ANIMATION, since in 2D they are both one and the same.

In 3D, they models and animation are separate.

So, the amount of work going from SF2 Ryu to SF3 Ryu is WAAAAAY higher than the work of going from T3 Paul to T4 Paul, because even with brand new models, most of Paul's animation keyframes can be ported directly from one game to the next.

The animations are one of the problems I have with Tekken. They're not bad at all, but it's obvious that they have gotten better at animating. It's extremely apparent with some of the newer characters, and especially some of the new moves on old characters. It doesn't seem consistent to me at all. I can almost pinpoint new moves just because of how they look even if I'm not familiar with a character.
gonna miss Baek... I have the worst luck when it comes to favorite fighting game characters.

Rain
Baek
Hwang
Ein
...

Ein has been in every DoA since his first appearance?
