satelight vs. deen

Honestly, after an episode of Sailor Moon Crystal even Satelight/Deen is going to look like the Sistine Chapel in comparison. That being said, there are subtle distinctions in the art, but I would be lying if I said I saw a huge difference between the two.

Log Horizon S2 episode 1 - impressions
My impressions are written as it is from the point of view of someone who has read all books available ( last one was out on the 29th spetember 2014 ) knows the lore and such.

First minute: Incredible waste of time. If it was to tell me that there are fights coming , it would have made much sense to integrate it within the first episode :" oh well "

Opêning: music is godly , the new opening visuals are EVEN more spoileric than the first OP. All the clues , twists , characters are in. They left nothing . Note to everyone: " don't pay attention to the OP or you'll be disapointed because you'll know most of the upcoming events"
Log%20Horizon%202%20-%2001_01.jpg

If you hadn't seen the episode i'd challenge you to know who is talking in this scene and you will lose. what's with the camera placement ?
First impressions : What a visual downgrade on the last seasons. the backgrounds in particular are not that nice. The animation on the faces and the characters position regarding the camera is all "off"
MY GOD , the animations are all stiff ..it's like everyone has no expression when talking ( compared to season 1 )

And why did you pick that sequence for the end of episode 1?it doesn't make sense
Again it's without context and it void the importance of such a scene
( that we' ll have to see 2 more times again )

Ending: The ending animation was alright .. i think it'll take time before i like it but it wasn't that bad.

General impressions:
So we're skipping book 6 entirely and then whe get book 7 events first I understand that they wanted to get in to the "meat" of the intrigue first and this is a matter of "chonological order" and "airing order" DEBATE but somehow i'm not liking how they handled this episode.
Too many scenes that weren't nicely made. we weren't missing any story but the way it was told lacked impact. As of now .. this episode might be confusing for many and i don't blame them.
I think it's a mistake to go "chonological" when the books had events placed just at the right pacing so you could go and figure out how everything unfolded and be amazed at how everything fitted together.
Log%20Horizon%202%20-%2001_02.jpg

"/adjustglasses emote failed" , not so smooth anymore.
Conclusion: right now i'm quite positive they will mess-up the big moments of the 2 books consisting this arc ( book 6&7) It's fairly obvious that the characterisation for all characters is at risk now that they choose to go and show scenes in the wrong order on purpose. It's a shame since i think log horizon fans could have handled it properly .( meaning that we are not dumb and we can understand out of order events , especially if it helps the narrative )
i'm very disapointed in the backgrounds, in the animations , in the details and in the cameos, i want to scream "DEEEN" , but right now i'm just too disapointed.

GENERAL RANT
Why are you showing me a scene , then you go back to a scene that happens earlier , then you cut show me a scene that happens much later in the timeline , to go back and show me the regular event timeline again ?
WHAT THE FUCK ? WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS TRAVESTY ???
GODDAM.

DEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!

Although S1 animation was average but it's rather obvious the production took a bigger dive when in the hands of Deen. S1 OP/ED is much better than S2 OP/ED. How is this studio still alive?

Other than DATABASE DATABASE JUST LIVING IN THE DATABASE WOAOH! Glad to see the superior MMO anime makes a return. How many times did glasses got pushed up? I lost count. Kinda weird decision to go for media res and sudden cuts, it's the same director so why go for it?

Okay, seriously, is this joke? Yea, I see differences here and thee but, no, they look pretty much the same to me.

Not sure either, the guild building structure and image is the same as in the original material ( it's the same facade on all sides if my memory is correct ) and the difference is mainly summer / fall changes.

They did change the round table floor room even if the positionnement of the camera is different

We may not know until later, we may not know ever, hard to say at this point.

The second shot is redrawn.

While Log Horizon and Log Horizon S2 share the same director there are plenty of differences among the staff:

- Different character designer
- Different art director
- Different director of photography
- Different colour designer

And presumably others.

It certainly feels like a downgrade both in terms of visuals and storytelling (and storytelling through visuals!). This is extremely disappointing. It just feels like amateur hour.

The thing that bothers me most is the messing around with the story for no good reason. I don't care if it looks like shit as long as that part holds up.

Disappointing to hear about Log Horizon. One of the few anime I had some mild enthusiasm for this season. However, it wasn't unexpected given the studio switch.

Basic events occur with time skips, are distinctly labeled by date so the viewer can work out the order that they occur in, and are given explicit context that ties the events together.

Anime fans across the world are bewildered.

I think the real problem is that it's the kind of story which, if told incorrectly, will fall apart. The series is focused on world building, systems, mechanics and scenes of talking heads. In the wrong hands this kind of tale would be cliched and terribly boring. This is quite the risk considering how thin some of the characterisation is.

Season 1 took great steps to keep the audience engaged, pace the heavier material well and hint at future developments without giving them away. One of the most exciting sequences in the original series features a scene where they cut between a battle and someone signing a contract and the shots with the contract are actually the most exciting parts! It takes a certain kind of skill to convey that. It remains to be seen if the new team can pull it off.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 00: Dayum that was a great adaptation of the prologue, cut down on exposition a bit, the backgrounds are also a noticeable step up from Zero and dat fight was all that I could ever wish for and more, loved it all.

Sure, animeGAF and timeskips and unchronological narration will never find together.

Poor first episode of Dusk Maiden and Natsu no Arashi.

First episode of Berserk is garbage too!

Unless you have a damn good reason for doing it, don't fuck with chronology. That's something for skilled writers to mess with, not slaves making anime.

I don't think you guys are aware of it so i'll say it .
The original author wrote this arc With 2 perspectives ( shiroe & akatsuki ) each told in one book.book 6 is akatsuki perspective and book 7 is shiroe perspective .
It's the same arc, with climaxes, downtimes , lot of world building exposition and character develloppement. The thing is , those 2 books do NOT have the same chronology. It would have been a out of order set of events perfectly paced by the original author itself and trust me , it worked beautifully.
My problem is that :
#- they adapted the events in chronological order ( from the 2 books ) breaking the original flaw of events AND THEN they mixed in some events from later and various points in the episode. Imo that felt unnecessary.
jexhius said " don't fuck with chronology" i agree but it was already fucked "just right" and there was no point in changing it.

As for what dimb said , they actually gave the clues for figuring the timeline in the episode. but then you have to :
-understand where in the timeline the first season ended
-see the details on the filler event( festival ) so everyone knows that only a couple of weeks have passed ( pumpkings was in the last days of october )
-that when shiroe is deciding to leave we're 30 days from christmas ( end of november now )
-understand that the whole ending sequence is 29 days later (without context since it happens roughly without information )

And don't get me started on shiroe departure.
shiroe says he is going to leave , then we cut to the tearstone mountains , then we are back to the log horizon building and then we get the naostugu is going too ?( wasn't this spoiled by the fact that naotsugu was in the earlier scene ? )
Anyway ,all this back and forth was totally unnecessary. it's not that it is hard to understand. i honnestly see no need for it.
Obvious to anyone who has read the book , no way they could have filled the remaining episode with only mother rosario. Calibur arc should be intresting to see animated. let's hope they don't adapt the "bad end scenario"

Can you watch fate/stay night without having seen any of the other fate shows? All I know is there is some war for a holy grail with summoned warriors

Log Horizon S2

Well, not that terrible. Though it also can't be said it was good, nor we won't be able to discern the quality until a few episodes more, when the plans start to move.

First minute is the typical flash-forward that teases all that is going to happen in the season, but imo it isn't important. You just see fights, monsters, people shouting, doing stuff, it's all vague and at the same time the same as season 1, which isn't exactly surprising.

For now, the basic setup is clear:
We bought lots of expensive buildings to avoid the south faction to buy and control the city, but now they need income. This is just the excuse to a new adventure, a high level dungeon raid to where the gold that appears magically in the world comes from. But they want to do it in secret to avoid the south faction's acting up, so they are going to need new characters. So I suppose this is again an "excuse" to introduce new heroes in the ensemble cast in the new season (new LN books).

The OP still gets to me, the first minute was truly just a teaser, and I counted like 7 glasses push ups. This reminds of Log Horizon alright.
We get another reason to go on an adventure and timeskip in between the episode that I can almost predict what's gonna happen next.
Not too bad of an episode.

Sword Art Online II 14

1/3rd heart monitors saving the day, 1/3rd exposition for the villains' plans, and 1/3rd Kirito roasting his friends while introducing Shino to them. Using a little girl there was a bit blunt in its narrative devices, but it's also an example of why I'm extremely glad to have an anime season without Mahouka on the schedule. A story that tries to appeal to emotion has more value to me than whatever the hell that show was doing. While not without its share of flaws, I think that the GGO arc shows that Kawahara can improve, somewhat. Every writer starts out as an amateur, after all. It's merely a matter of if they refine themselves. One of the upcoming arcs even looks to have Asuna as a main character!

Log Horizon S2 - 1

Definitely enjoyed this episode. I suppose I can understand complaints with people saying that the narrative skips around a bit but the actual meat of the episode definitely scratched that Log Horizon itch for me and as a person who's only been exposed to the anime I came away satisfied with the experience.

Gundam Build Fighters 18

Objectively the best fight in the show

Gundam Build Fighters 19

I really shouldn't have watched this right after. The super robot tendencies contrasted way too heavily with the strategy angle of the last episode. Also Nils is kind of a boring character and his "I like Gunpla now!" character arc was really predictable. Maybe pairing him up with Caroline is the best thing for him

I'd put them on about the same level.

I don't think it's comparable at all. I -love- Fate/Zero as a series, but Paradox Spiral was a direction masterclass. Without a doubt the best thing Hirao has ever done in his career. How the visuals, the sound, the editing, and everything is used to convey the themes and "tell" the narrative through emotions invoked in the viewer rather than script, is something which isn't often executed on this level in anime (or film in general even).

Preach.

After a while I realized I don't like the KnK series nearly as much as I did at first but KnK5 is still an absolute gem that should be checked out for the direction and editing alone.

Damn you guys make me scared to watch LH2 ep1, really that bad?

No. Its also impossible to make a judgement on the quality of this season's plot, characterization, and pacing just one episode in. First episode was fine and very Log Horizon.

There is a noticeable change in animation however it is minimal. Some characters look a little worse, others look a little better. Some look the same. Animation isn't as smooth but its not terrible. Given that the first season didn't have the best animation to begin with complaints about DEEN's work seems a bit nit picky. The OP/ED is objectively worse though than S01. That said this a plot/character driven show so animation isn't as important as nailing the story. Given that all the key people are the same as far as directors, etc and that DEEN is only animating, blaming any potential issues to come on DEEN seems misguided even if its fun to shout "DEEEEEN!".

The direction is masterful, no doubt, but it's still hurt at least a tiny bit by starring the awful KnK characters :(

Waremete/In Search of the Lost Future 01

The season F/SN returns to the air, it brings with it more (not-Otome) VN-based anime than there's been in a long time. There was Walkure Romanze not long ago, and this is the first. The characters look a little weird, like they're almost CGI like Arpeggio, except I'm pretty sure they're 2D. They're messing with my perception. Mostly a setup episode to get to know the characters. They're not quite as quirky as some other VNs (that's what Librarian is for, I think), but I do like the sense of mystery. Namely,
Kaori getting hit by a bus after a love confession, and one cut later showing her being just fine.

If there's one thing I know about VNs, it's that time loops are a common plot device in them. Is that also the case here? I'm glad to see Yuko Goto voice acting again, and aside from the weird character design, not a bad start.

I suspect a few people may like Kenny for his English, too.

I gotta give it to SAOII they know how to brighten up my morning when the first thing in the new episode is rape face dude with his gollum creepy smile saying "ASADA-SAAAAAAAAN"
