Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

I'm having a little trouble getting started.

I want to get to blowing some ships up. What's the best way for me to find some objectives that won't be beyond me at the start of the game?

Probably jobs on the bulletin board, although I only ever took trading jobs so I can't tell for sure.
What I like to do when I feel like blowing something up is patrol around a planet and look for unidentified signals. You find a lot of wanted NPCs on their own.

Just loaded it up and my controls were changed. The right stick changed to look around and now I can't control up and down thrusts. I changed it back and it won't stick :/

edit - restart fixed it!

I still have to look you for Quiche. I forgot. :p

I am just a simple man doing simple jobs cause I am awful at this game :P

I'll be your escort in the Anarchy systems. Just pay me a few credits here and there. :p

Just landed in a small space station near a gas giant.

Priceless.

Im getting stable 75fps with my rift by forcing the Batman Arkhan Asylun profile. Pratically perfect experience, with some artifacts.

Still stuck on the loading screen when trying to play anything that isnt tutorials or combat missions. Probably need to reinstall the game. :(

Edit:
Nevermind, had to just clear my save (profile?) and I was good to go again, sweet.

Hard to say, the interior was said to be for the courier. This seems to be from the exact same company but a much smaller version. There's talk that its a "cutter" on forums.

Just by looking at the size of the canopy in the sketch, the courier is nearly Anaconda in size. In frontier 2 it was 160m×45m×100m, compared to the Anaconda's 75m×60m×170m

While the one from this week's peek is more towards eagle's size due to the hatch size in the back.

We'll know soon, one thing for sure, there's very very different ship designs coming and thats a really good thing.

I like that they're adding some slick-looking ships, but I hope they also work on more bulky Star Wars-ish ships like the Sidewinder and it's mechanical sound.

Not getting very good performance in the Rift unless I turn everything way down (GTX-680, game runs like a champ in normal 1080p with everything maxxed). I even have to turn down the "Oculus Quality" slider. I'm also getting an odd "pulsing" glow effect now and then, like there's a bright light flashing outside the ship. I wonder if it's some kind of lighting effect that's displaying oddly because everything's turned down so low (shadows, etc). Seems to happen more when I'm near a station. Don't remember seeing it when I was running on the normal monitor.

Aside from that, the new lighting engine is like playing a whole new game, major graphical overhaul, and it performs even better (sans Rift) than it did before. I'm liking it.

I think the pulsing effect might have something to do with your camera. Have you tried going farther from the camera?

I'll give it a try tomorrow. I was having an issue where the system initially put me way too far back (I was behind and inside the chair, I could look down and see my own neck), so I leaned forward and reset the Rift position (thank God for VoiceAttack.. lol.. I have "Oculus Reset" as a command). Need to tweak some more stuff for sure.

We don't have to still turn off/pause the Oculus service, do we? I left it on tonight (first time I played the new beta) and I wasn't getting any of the issues I had with Beta 1 with the service running (horrific chromatic aberration, messed up distortion/aspect ratio, etc). But someone on the Oculus forums said he got rid of the judder by turning it off. I guess I'll give that a whirl tomorrow too (off to bed now).

I've been keeping it off and performance has been good 95% of the time. So I'm gonna keep it off.

2.03 fixed things up for me, so I spent a couple of hours last night safely running cargo in solo mode. Trade routes are still quite fussy, I'm finding myself spending more time trying to locate a consumable on the galaxy/system maps than actually traversing systems!

The smaller stations/outputs are really nice, but a designated landing pad can be tricky to find. Most times I'll exit jump to the underside of the station. Not a huge problem, just wish approaching had a little more sign-posting.

Does anybody know how to make the menus look sharper? They kinda look like somebody put a blur filter on them.

I actually prefer this, same with the menu display interference - gives off a real Alien (the movie) vibe.

How does the piracy/faction system work?

I've been looking for contracts to kill stuff, but I'm only seeing piracy combat contracts. Will I immediately turn into a criminal and get attacked by the police if I do any of these?

How do I get "legal" combat contract missions?

Jesus, Beta 3 this month? If there's going to be another wipe I might not dive in as deep as I planned to.

Frontier is on fire.

Man, I'm excited that the Betas are coming fast. I need to figure out my setup and such so being able to mess around without consequences has been good. I can't count how many times I've flown into the space station because I didn't have Throttle Forward (toggle) Throttle Reverse set how I "thought" it was set.

Or using the Rift and not knowing what any of the menus are. BULLSHIT I NEED TO REQUEST DOCKING COMING IN HOT!

I really suggest you play for a day or two with just the monitor to see what the menus are and where things are..

You're striking me as a bit odd though. While the resolution can clearly be better, you can lean in and make out stuff. Have you tried B lenses?

I think it might be an AA thing. My main thing is that I don't know what buttons really do what. I'm in the process of making a mapping off some pics I found for the X55. I'm really new so most things are foreign to me. Haven't had a lot of time to tinker =(

So I'm pretty sure the Detailed Surface scanner or whatever it's called that allows you to make decent money exploring can't be purchased on most ships. Won't show up in the store for my hauler or eagle but if I buy a sidewinder at the same spot there it is. Da fuck.

So for those using the X-55, I found a sheet on the official forums (user 'forger') and took that base and went through and found out which buttons mapped to which "Joystick [Number]" button. While I could assign things myself (and I will) I kept 'remapping' things accidentally when just going down the list accidentally and it was irritating.

Oh, you thought mapping Boost to that button was genius? Well Deploy Hardpoints was using "JOY5" and now you're screwed!" ... anyway, here's the blanks so you can fill them in as you please, I just edited out his stuff in Gimp and then added the J#.

Performance is definitely better, I can run it almost maxxed out now. I did have to turn down the "Oculus Quality" slider, I was getting this odd "doubling" effect when I turned my head. Not quite stutter, although the framerate did seem low, but I was also getting two frames at the same time which looked horrible. Turned it down to about haflway and it performs normally, even inside stations. Still getting that pulsing effect, but I do believe you're correct in that it's the camera placement, as there's a very slight movement to my positional tracking when it happens. I need to find a new place to put that camera, but it doesn't have the right kind of mounting bracket for me to hang it on the wall behind my monitor. I'll think of something.

Anyone have any money making tips?

I just ran the Distress Beacon and I've been doing no cargo space required courier missions but I'm wondering if there is something a little faster to get some credits.

Trading was the way to go back in Beta 1. I don't see any reason for them to have changed it at all, but I haven't really tried very hard in Beta 2.

They seem to have fiddled with the controls a bit. I have a button on the stick used for targeting things, but previously it also worked to un-target something.. if I clicked it again with nothing else highlighted, it would deselect the current target. Now, it doesn't do that any more, there doesn't seem to be a way to deselect something. Am I missing something?

???

As far as I know there are these button assignments:

-Select what you are looking to.
-Select highest threat (enemy).
-Cycle between contacts (previous and next).
-Cycle between enemy contacts (previous and next).

If you use the first one twice looking to i.e. the same sidewinder, I think it will select it again. No? Maybe I'm wrong and it just selects the locked destiny, I'm not sure.

Yeah, but it used to be (prior to Beta 2) that pressing the Target button again, when you already had something targeted, but nothing else highlighted, then it would just deselect your target and you'd end up with nothing at all targeted.

As an example, let's say I get interdicted. I pop weapons and turn around, lock target to get a scan, and find out it's only local security. No big deal. But now I can't get rid of that target lock.. it's there permanently unless I target something else. It didn't used to work that way, I could just click "Target" again and it would unlock from the security ship.

I'm guessing no one else has come across this? You just leave everything targeted all the time even if it's of no further interest?

Awesome my X52 just broke, something inside the stick just snapped and I lost all input.

Looks like it's time for a replacement... so X52 Pro or X55?

Did my first long run with Elite:Dangerous + Oculus DK2 this weekend. Played for 3 hours.
I love it. The only times I got sick was outside of stations. The looking around + rotating of the station seemed to mess heavily with my sense of balance.
Resolution is of course a problem, but its ok.

Other than that I had a blast. Dogfighting was incredible. I had so much fun exploring a new system. Crusing around looking for those bright spots that move in front of the background.

There seems to be a bug in the selling of exploration data though. First time I only registered a sun and got about 1.5k credits for that. After I cruised around the system and scanned like 10 planets/moons I got only ~500 for that. Or maybe I did something wrong...

I got to play Elite for the first time yesterday. First, I played it on the Oculus DK1, then on a big screen. I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the feeling using the Oculus. The sense of scale is awesome, and the feeling of running loops around asteroids was just amazing.

Of course I had to forget the resolution, but the experience was still so damn great.

I have no complaints with the X55 but I haven't used it for an extensive time and never used the X52P. From research I guess it's been a QA issue with the X55 otherwise people like it better that I've read. I got it from Amazon with a 3 year warranty which was only $20 just in case. Figured $20 is worth peace of mind.
