Assassin's Creed "Parity": Unity is 900p/30fps on both PS4 & Xbox One

Is it possible that Sony inadvertently make a mistake by making their console roughly 50% more powerful?
What I meann is, we are seeing a trend where 3rd party devs don't bother with the extra power. EA sports games, destiny, unity etc are identical on both consoles so only 1st party title are really using that extra power. Might make them not push power next gen (ps5) seeing as its not really worth it. Hope that doesn't happen :(

The extra head-room will pay off in 1st party exclusives and I believe in multiplats towards the latter half of the Gen cycle. Right now we are still very early with MS jockying for position. MS gives up rather early by comparison to Sony, however. We've seen that happen in both previous gens and they will likely give up early on the Xbone as well, especially as sales projections over the next 2-3 years continue to heavily favor the PS4. In other words, these kinds of parity efforts on the part of MS will only last so long. Eventually the greater horsepower in the PS4 will be an obvious advantage in nearly every release, especially as this gen begins to wind down in 5 or so years. The last wave of games will really show off what the PS4 can do. For now we only see glimpses of it but its coming.

Thanks Jason.

That statement is pretty empty though; they pretty much say absolutely nothing.
Yeah, it's sneaky language. "We did not lower the specs" still doesn't mean they didn't intentionally limit them. I actually sent them a follow-up before posting that in hopes of getting some clarity on whether they're claiming that the PS4 version wasn't capable of more than 900p/30fps in the first place, but I'm not expecting much more.

The XBone has a 10% stronger CPU than the PS4 because of the clock frequency increase of the XBone but the PS4 has a 40% stronger GPU.
But I can't believe they can't reach 1080p on the PS4 if 900p possible on the XBone.
(900p to 1080p is 44% more pixel)

Isn't Xbox One also using up more CPU power because of it is using 3 OS? I can't really say if one CPU is better than the other in terms of practical uses in games.

The PR statement says essentially the same thing: they picked the same target so that the versions would be equal.

It's just dressed up prettier.

Just putting this here.

Who cares about how the game looks, yes the PS4 version will be running at 900p and at 30fps to match that of the Xbox One. Why are people getting so angry, this is the equivalent of 2 brothers/sisters fighting over who gets the better toy. And the Mother (game developers) giving 2 equal toys to the children, and one of them (the one who wanted the better toy) throwing it out of the pram.

I'm getting this game still, and many others will as well.

Meh. Don't believe the statement. If X1 could handle 900p/30 fps I would think PS4 could handle 1080p/30 fps.

No, see, they had quality expectations in mind and they've hit them on all platforms... while at the same time taking full advantage of all optimization resources of each platform... where the more powerful one performs like the weaker one... somehow...

Maybe it's timed parity, after 6 months ps4 owners can play it at 1080p.

At no point did we decide to reduce the ambitions of any SKU.

So, is Ubisoft saying that Bruno St-André was lying?

Ubisoft's upcoming stealth-action game Assassin's Creed Unity is targeting 1080p/60fps for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, level designer Bruno St-André revealed in an interview with GamingBolt conducted at E3 but published today.

Ubisoft: "We understand Vincent Pontbriand's statements may have made a lot of you question parity with the PS4 and XB1 version. We can assure you this is furthest from the truth. We have no intentions of not taking advantage of a system's hardware and stuff. Now if you'll look over here..."

"...Assassin's Creed is going to be amazing! Check out these impressions! HOT GAME SAUCE FOR YOUR FACES!!"

Thus is such a shitty analogy it's not even funny.

It's more like what it is, two systems, one of which is more powerful, and it being held back.

The issue isn't complex enough to need an analogy. All it's doing is obscuring the problem at hand.

It's not about how the games looks but how Ubisoft's practices sucks.

Ubisoft - I didn't care about the female character stuff, in fact I even defended you on the issue. But this is a poor decision - I won't be buying your game, and I will be encouraging my friends not to either. We all spent $449 CA for the ability to play games with better graphics that ran at 1080p. If you want to make a product that intentionally doesn't meet those standards, don't expect my friends and I to show you any interest - it's only fair.

Don't want to come across as a dick or anything, but you are saying that you and your friends spent $449 CA for games that run at 1080p. I don't recall Sony or on any of the Sony marketing that they promised you 1080p for every game, I think it is foolish to state that the reason you bought a PS4 is because of every game should be 1080p.

I am not defending the stupidity of Ubi's comments, but I am not naïve enough to think that every game on the PS4 should be 1080p. I wish it would, but realistically, there are going to be some gams that are not 1080p on the PS4. Be realistic. Again, not saying that AC Unity should or should not, I am not developing the game nor do I know what they are doing to cause it to be 900p, but making a statement that you $449 should provide you 1080p for every game is a bit naïve.

Interesting it was your site that ran this article about AI being moved to the GPU via GPGPU. Article seems fitting.

Kotaku | First Physics, Now AI Is Being Moved To Your Graphics Card

Speaking with Custom PC, representatives from both graphics card manufacturers say that "they're working on GPGPU-accelerated AI in games", and that we could be seeing the first games and hardware to take advantage of this as early as next year.

Nvidia and ATI say they're working right now with developers of both games and middleware on the initiative, with the ultimate goal of taking all AI routines - which spend around 90% of their time performing visibility and path finding queries - off the hands of the CPU, and sticking them in your graphics card instead.

So they sent out the 'putting out the fire' PR statement already.

No guys you read it all wrong. When he said "we kept them equal so nobody would complain" what he meant to say was "we worked our asses off on both consoles equally". You need reading comprehension internet.

See! This whole thing has been one big misunderstanding!

I still love you Ubi!

;P

Actually it was the home of the 6GB VRAM controversy, where we got dozens of meltdowns from some PC gamers thinking that their video cards were now "worthless". It also went through a bit of a console roller-coaster, where people were mocking the XBO version for being "720p30", based on some sort of vague information that the PS4 was expected to be 1080p60. It turned out that XBO was 900p30 and PS4 was 1080p30, so nearly everybody was wrong until we got our hands on the game.
What do you mean by vague?

On stream when asked about the technical details, an representative of the studio said targeting 1080p60.

I feel this is the second time I've seen you be incorrect about this very thing while having this pointed out.

Why is it the juniors that consistently push this false narrative? Serious question.
We have no hard numbers from Sony on it and the spec leaks indicated a 1.6GHz processor while MS has officially confirmed 1.75. I honestly don't blame them for not knowing about Matt's post that said they can get more out of the PS4 CPU. It's not that well known and is probably accounting for OS overhead. In all likelihood XBO's CPU is probably clocked higher but is held back by the OS.

When the game was titled Unity, I had no idea it would be this.

Why not just do what's best for both systems and let the consumer decide instead of causing a PR storm by forcing parity on both systems unless someone backed the Brinks truck up.

How long before people come here and say GAF was overreacting all based on a shitty PR release?

That shit does not alleviate any fears, I would say it doesn't say shit all to change my disgust at this practice.

Anyone defending this practice, may I ask why? You think its people overreacting?Let people voice their concerns it wont affect you, if the voices are heard you get a better looking game(on the stronger hardware) if not you still get your Vaseline smeared game you wanted.

This buddy relationship between a consumer and a publisher is getting out of hand, everything anti-consumer these days is shrugged off with "It doesn't affect me,so I don't care".

Keep fighting the good fight.

it reads as if the 900/30 was reached on PS4 and no further polish is being done. it all leads back to my wish that each version should receive the same amount of development time.

If the Xbone version is receiving more crunch time I have a problem with that. we're paying the same amount of money for the same game.
