IIRC he had Girl's Gneeration on before (which was kinda funny since only two speak English really well the others just kinda sat all pretty). So not TOO much of a stretch for him to take on something outside the North American culture, but great nonetheless.

Oddly, I wish the 3D Miku model looked better (maybe I just don't like the artist's style they adapted into 3D though).

Miku my queen, she has come a long way since she was just a niche music software people in Japan used to make music with, love her and Vocaloid music

Anime on tv. What a time to be alive. Give me a perfomance with HoloTupac and Gorillaz and then you've got yourself a show.

Not gonna lie, I had no idea what this was and had to search for it.

And now I'm just confused. Why is this a thing?

The real question is... why it shouldn't be a thing?

Anyway i'm a little surprised that there's people in a place like gaf who don't know who/what Miku is. I understand not being fans as I'm not a fan in any way (i only find a little tune to be actually bearable to listen) but i thought its existence to be pretty widespread in these kind of places.

IIRC, a lot of posters on the OT side don't even visit the gaming side.

"Anime" is just the modern day umbrella term for "creepy Japanese crap"

Honestly, I have never seen this once before this thread. Guess I just overlooked the references/threads about it.

How/When did this become a thing?

Does Hatsune Miku speak English? I mean, she does right?

You've gotta be eased into vocaloid. You can't just throw it on a stage and expect people to not be confused and kinda weirded out.
Agreed. It doesn't take a genious to figure out tonight won't end well. I think vocaloid is the defining musical technology of the era but it's still a very strange concept.

I belive V3 has an english voice bank, but it's not great.

I always thought that Miku was a videogame based on a Japanese idol.

I mean, she isn't real, can't they just get someone to give it an English voice

What in the hell? I already thought the holograms of dead artists was bad... What's the target audience for this?

While I wouldn't go to one of these concerts (ignore the avatar), I can see the draw. A concert is just as much about the atmosphere as the artist. Treat it like a party celebrating music and not a concert, which those people seem to be doing.

Honestly, while I mock this kind of stuff, I still find it less shameful than the dead artist holograms. At least this doesn't feel as shamelessly exploitative as those do.

I've never watched an episode of Letterman, or played the Miku games or vocaliods. But now, I kinda want to watch this to see how it plays out.

When you peel away the animu, Miku is honestly pretty fascinating. Its the democratization of popular music and pop stars. Imagine if anybody could create a Katy Perry sing. Imagine if anybody could create a Kanye West song. I think vocaloid type stuff stands a chance of succeeding in the US if you build the character around our culture instead of importing a very Japanese character.
