Is Halo still relevant?

Relevant is a pretty tough thing to place in a nice little package.

Is it still a relevant fps shooter in the current state of gaming? Yes. As relevant? Debatable, but I'd say probably not because there are so many variations out there.

Is it's impact relevant? Absolutely. I bet there are a lot of analysts waiting to see how the MCC fares. Not just to see if publishers will want to create their own packages, but if it helps sell systems.

Story relevance? I was never too huge into it anyway, but with the amount of lore created around it I would say it is still very relevant not just to gaming, but to a niche science fiction crowd as well.

It's one of those franchises that will always be relevant to some degree.
 
Its lost a bit of of its luster ever since COD became the big go to shooter franchise,but its still massive.

I dunno if the MCC is going to be a good enough indicator as to wheter its still got its massive appeal, since its going to mostly be sold on notalgia (that and it being a really good deal)

Its Halo 5 thats going to be the key decider.
 
I'd say it is. I've never been a ms/xb guy but all the Halo games in a compilation for xb1 is the only thing that has made me consider the platform. Sounds like a great deal.. I think I'm in!

I don't think Halo Reach is MS's fault, judging by Destiny.
 
Not feeling it myself. Wouldn't be surprised if this didn't move the needle much, but since Halo: The Master Chief Collection will bundled for the holiday season everyone will just attribute the boost to Halo and think it has drawing power.
 
Its probably the most relevant Xbox game the xbox brand has, #2 is Gears.

As far as FPS go, its COD ( which is declining) then Halo. Battlefield hurt itself immensely and id say most people aren't looking forward to hardline. Destiny still has to prove that it won't fade out by november when COD and Halo drop
 
It's still relevant. Just not as relevant as it used to be (thanks to the Modern Warfare boom).

Halo 5 will be "make or break" since it will be the first Halo for this gen (and will therefore get attention due to that alone). If it's dissapointing then I don't think the series will ever get back to where it once was.
 
If I had to pinpoint the "start" it was definitely CoD 4. It was the only game then that really tore people from sci-fi shooters successfully. It was only a matter of time I guess
 
Is Mario still relevant? What about Link? What about Final Fantasy? What about Metal Gear Solid? All those games are not the juggernauts they once were.

Halo is no different. The Master Chief Collection will have a ridiculous attach rate, I personally am buying a Sunset bundle just for it, and I know at least 4 people personally who are doing the same or already bought one.

Halo 5 will be a good indicator in the future of the series. It's never going to recapture what it meant like Halo CE, 2 or 3 did. But to ask whether it's still relevant is ridiculous. It's easily the biggest IP MS has, and will easily sell millions this year and the next.

And yet, with the launch of TitanFall, Destiny, soon Halo, the next Call of Duty itself is set much further in the future with futuristic sci-fi gameplay. CoD:AW pre-orders are also much less than ghosts, which were much less than Black ops 2. Call of Duty itself is a declining game brand as well. It's sheer strength is due to the fact it's multiplatform, if Halo was to come to PC you'd see it regain a ton more relevance. If Halo was to be on Playstation (never), it would probably be the premiere shooter again.

I would argue that it's more relevant now than it has been in years. The gaming world -- especially consoles -- is in desperate need of FPSs like Halo. COD and other military shooters are cool, but they've become way too dominant. The genre needs diversity. The genre needs Halo.

It is a funny thing to see the modern shooter if last gen join in the sci fi race this gen.
 
Not for me. Plenty of other FPS games have successfully adopted enough of the series to make it feel generic - Generic enough that you can just hire a batch of yahoos to churn out new Halos for you, ha-ha.

What last bits of identity Halo still had has been co-opted by Destiny. I finally did make my own Spartan, and he punches space wizards all day. More importantly, the Crucible feels like Halo MP to me. Given how incredibly lackluster recent Halo multi has been (I include Reach in that, best Forge notwithstanding), it's 'good enough' that I feel no desire to spend any money on Halo ever again.

And even if Halo 5 is the best ever, it would only be the first of the three 'system-sellers' I need before I'll even consider buying a system.

It's a shame I'm settling for good enough, though. I spent all day at a card shop around the time Halo 3 launched, and let me tell you, there was nothing before or since like having the back rooms literally bursting into the hallways with people playing, watching, cheering and jeering. I miss that.
 
No. It peaked seven years ago with Halo 3. MS is clinging to it in desperation because it's one of like three IPs they didn't just buy timed exclusivity for last gen.
 
I remember playing halo 3 a lot when my brother had his 360. But I actually liked Resistance: fall of man better.
Not as big as it used to be though

Do you NOT understand the social and cultural significance of Halo? There IS potential that;s is untapped currently. The MCC will grab that, and hopefully Halo 5 will build on it...

Halo will probably outsell battlefield by a wide margin, and were it not for the fact Advanced Warfare is bundled with Xbox One limited edition 1TB consoles, I'd venture to say it would have sold more than CoD on Xbox One as well.

I understood it, when it was relevant in 2007. I was there at the midnight launch. Rewatched the terrific liveaction ads, and poured hundreds of hours into the game.

Then MS decided to commit Bungie to churning out sequels forever, Bungie made two quickies as fast as possible and got the fuck out of dodge.

Halo was a dying man with ODST and Reach, and a bloated corpse by the time Halo 4 hit.
 
I feel like in one of the sales thread I asked this very question and I don't remember the answer. I think everyone agrees that the multiplayer community has been going down of a while, but I don't remember the games' sales from 3 to 4, and their respective attach rate at the time of their sales (i.e., if there were only a million Xbox 360s when 3 released, and it sold 1 million, that'd be a better outcome than if 4 released on two million Xbox 360s but only sold 1.2 million or something).

Anyway, anecdotally, the people I know who were big into Halo all left to play COD once Halo became "too complex" for them with the shields and jet packs and running and all that stuff.

I'm commenting on the relevance of the franchise. It's safer to try to eek out as much money out of an established IP like Halo even after it has peaked than investing in a potential flop. I understand why they're trying to keep it going, it doesn't change my opinion about its irrelevance.

While it wasn't as popular as 3, Reach's population didn't fall nearly as much nor as fast as Halo 4's did. At least Reach's population stayed over 100k (daily peak) for months, 4's population dropped to about 20-25k right after Christmas ended (so about a month after release).

Halo in its prime was beaten by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare quite comfortably. There are limits to what you can expect for this remake against modern games. I'm excited for Halo's return, but I don't think the general public are in the same way they will be about a modern shooter made.
 
First of all, it was Reach not Halo 4 that caused the decline. 343 simply tried to honor what Bungie did and it didn't work.

Bullshit, I remember watching X-Play and seeing the live stats for COD4 and Halo 3, Halo 3 was almost always in the lead but sometimes COD4 would win out.

Yeah, but we're in a new generation, where PS4 is the lead platform so to speak. Why would you buy an Xbox One if not for Halo? So it's safe to assume Halo will have a high attach rate. Additionally, CoD:AW pre-orders are significantly lower than they were for Ghosts, which itself were lower than Black Ops 2.

The Master Chief collection has the benefit of having the majority of the past Halo games, promises a return to more classic roots in H2A, and allows you to play the Halo 5 Beta early. Were it not for the fact Call of Duty got its own bundle, I can easily see MCC having outsold Call of Duty Advanced Warfare on Xbox One.

Talking out of your ass there slick. Halo 3 and CoD:4 routinely traded spots for Top played game on Xbox Live, it wasn't until Modern Warfare 2 came out in 2009, that Halo dropped, further evident by how much Reach was hated by a large group of fans.

And if you look at the new Call of Duty, it's almost eerily similar to the gameplay of Reach and Halo 4 now, full on active camo, entire game types like ricochet copied, very futuristic sci-fi gameplay.

This is also wrong. Halo 3 and CoD4 would trade places for months for the top spot for most players on XBL. In no way did Modern Warfare "comfortably" beat Halo 3 until years later.

This whole thread is full of wrong.
