Got this working. ;)

(By the way, there's no maximum)

Will there be an RPG mode or is that reserved for the sequel?

At the minute, this is just a simple system to increase the power of each paddle the more you play with it. For example, the laser one only fires one shot at level 1.

You could theoretically get it up to level 100 where it would fire 100 shots, but that would require 247500 experience and right now I have it set that you get 1 exp per block destroyed. Values may change, but I want it so that a) there's no level cap but b) it's very time consuming to get too high

I see.

I was only partially kidding btw. I do not seriously expect an RPG mode but I also haven't seen experience points in a Breakout game, yet, so that might be an idea worth expanding upon. :)

I can't stand them. Traditional turn-based JRPGs are by far my favorite genre, but I just can't stand Action-RPGs. Even acclaimed ones like Secret of Mana (mediocre) and Xenoblade (bad). And it's extra-frustrating to look at them, and know they would have been great games, if they had just used a traditional turn-based system instead =(

You've probably haven't heard this yet, but as they say in Dark Souls, GIT GUD.
Action RPG is the new future. Turn by Turn RPGs are antiquated.
Strategy can be incorporated in Action RPG if done right.
FF13 would be even better had it gone with an Action RPG Battle style like Kingdom Hearts.

It's like we live in opposite land. Ultra-traditional turn-based combat is my kryptonite.

I'm flashing back to the guy in that one Xenoblade LTTP thread who claimed Xenoblade was turn based because you had to wait for cooldowns :D

Don't know if my question belongs here, but do the streetpass games ever go on sale?

No way I'm paying 5$ a piece for these games when the only streetpasses I ever get are my brothers.

No.

I don't consider Xenoblade to be an action RPG at all unless you consider most mmos to be action based.

Shit is timed as hell in those games. You attack at a set speed, your stuff can be used again after a cooldown, enemies take their time attacking you. Sure there is minor bits of positioning to consider but it's not even close to what I'd consider an Action game.

Well, nobody said "action game" but "action RPG" - there's both.

Boo @ you people >.>
No wonder companies keep turning any RPG into an ARPG =(

This is why I was very excited and happy about the release of Grinsia.
And why Bravely Default is my Game of the Year

BD has great turn-based combat that removes all the hassle and annoyances! Another one with great turn-based combat is Radiant Historia or the Golden Sun series. Those do it right. But classic FF-style or ATB combat is my nemesis. I guess I can tolerate ATB in the games it originated in but put it in new games and I'll fall asleep at the wheel.

What about Zelda? That's probably the longest running action RPG series I can recall.

That Zelda site is pretty good. I like the encyclopedia.

FWIW, I've always been told Zelda is an action RPG and action-adventure game. I don't think people used to call games action-adventure games, though, that term is a bit newer in my experience; maybe that's why Zelda used to be considered an action RPG by more people.

I felt the series has always fit the action RPG role. Even the original game is Dark Souls by design: we're told very little backstory about Link, but we're thrown in and told to go. The Souls series is what Zelda would be if Nintendo never decided to stick to saving a princess and developing a villain like Ganon/Ganondorf.

Because there's a category which not only describes it perfectly, but which is pretty much defined by it.

Action-Adventure can also align with Action RPG. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I've never appreciated you enough, DoktorEvil. Even with your avatar from...the cover of...a Sensational Spider-Man issue I read as a kid? (I think?)

action adventure as a term is as old as my involvement in the gaming hobby. ever since I've started gaming on the SNES zelda has been classified as an action adventure.

This is skeleton Tobey. It'll change to another Tobey post-October, but what do I deserve appreciation for? I'm merely a person who debates emotionally and logically as anyone else does, I just stopped doing the snarky one liners most other posters do.

Honestly, I classified Zelda as purely action-adventure until I played Dark Souls and it triggered a comparison.
Secret of Mana would be a more obvious Action RPG.

Sure.
But in the case of Zelda (sans 2), they are.

Pretty much this.

I don't remember anyone considering or calling any Zelda game (again, sans 2) anything to do with an "RPG" up until Ocarina of Time, at which point it seemed like people started tossing that term in randomly to make up for the N64's lack of RPGs.

I miss the Ness avatar =(

Oh, well, that's something I appreciate in and of itself!

Just different gaming circles, probably. I haven't been gaming any longer than you, probably, but back in the day the gaming circles were a lot smaller so I'm sure the kids and magazines around you were probably different than those around me.

Sure.

I miss the Ness avatar =(

Too many people had the same avatar so I had to go with something memorable. I thank Stormtrooper for showing me the importance of a recognizable avatar.

I didn't make the connection until Dark Souls. Then I did some reading and Miyamoto wanted the series to compete with Hydlide in Japan, so the innovations we recognize as important in the first Zelda are incremental improvements over a series that was called "action RPG" back in the day, including Link swinging his sword.

So I've never played any of the DKC games (didn't have a SNES growing up). I wanna pick up one of them, which would you recommend? I'm sure I'll get a lot of "all of them!" and that's a possibility, but what would you order as the best?

DKC2 is the greatest platformer ever made. Amazing levels, awesome worlds, stunning music, tonnes of secrets, great boss battles

DKC1 is average, imo the weakest. Simplistic levels, worst graphics, terrible bosses, no real secrets

DKC3 is alright, I love it. It's basically a massive exploreandcollectathon, but thats cool.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze discount is running for 3 weeks, so presumably they are going to release one DKC every week.
Yup, the schedule (for at least EU) is:

16th: Donkey Kong Country & Donkey Kong Land
23rd: DKC2 & DKL2
30th: DKC3 & DKL3

Definitely don't worry about DKC3 if you don't love the first two. It's good but definitely the weakest.

DKC2 is the best but DKC might be where you want to start. The game isn't the complete package DKC2 is but it's a good place to start in terms of gameplay and structure.

I dunno. If you dislike DKC1 (very possible) then you will end up missing out on the sublime DKC2. And that's terrible.

2 > 1 > 3

But, yes, get them all

Does this mean we won't see any other VC games aka Metroid Zero Mission on Wii U for the next 3 weeks?

No. This doesn't mean that. Because Metroid Zero Mission wouldn't have released anyway lol. You can bet your butt that they're holding that until they randomly announce a handheld Metroid game out of the blue in some Direct. Or for the second round of Smash character-sales when the Wii U version hits ;D

DKC2 is almost universally the favorite, it's a fight between 3 and 1 beyond that. I like 3 more than 1 but it depends what you're after, DKC1 is a more classic "level after level" experience and enemies honestly have a bit more personality. Don't like most non-boss additions to DKC3 but the map is very interesting for it's time and the gameplay is quite fun. Though it'd have been better with Diddy and Dixie.

So I'd go 2 3 1 (23 is number one!), though you'll miss out on how much better DKC2 is than 1 (not that DKC1 is BAD), but it's better that you miss that than get turned off by DKC1's flaws.

I like them all but DKC3 the least.

I have a little story about this, actually. I didn't buy many games in the SNES era, mostly just rented them (I'm guessing I'm not alone in that since it's a reflection of the times). My friend had DKC1 which is how I became fond of the series. I rented DKC2 several times and really enjoyed it, finally my parents said they'd buy me a copy. We went to Wal-Mart or something and DKC2 was nowhere to be found on the shelves. All they had was DKC3. I was shocked by this revelation, and even though I really wanted DKC2, I decided might as well just grab DKC3 instead. I can't remember the exact rationale behind this decision, but that's what happened. Gotta be honest, I never quite got to love DKC3 as much as the other two, despite it being the only game in the trilogy I owned until it was re-released on Wii VC.

I think you're a bit too harsh on DKC1. It's not the revolution it was in 1994 to be sure but the game definitely holds up.

DKC2 is the superior game though, no question.

DKC3's biggest problem, or strength, is that it has a TON of different gimmicks. Like every level usually has a new gimmick, some good, some bad. So you might either like the evolving challenges, or hate how a lot of times you'd rather just be platforming.

It also dumps Rambi for the stupidest Animal Buddy Trash ever, Elly, and an obnoxious level where you have to avoid rats. The only other new Animal Buddy is a stupid bird who mirrors your moves and can grab hard to reach items. And Kiddy is a poor man's Donkey Kong, except he has the cool water-bounce-roll which DK has in Tropical Freeze.

I like it overall, though. It's theme...very northern, is quite unique. There's not really a video-game that feels quite like the world of Krematoa. The music is also really odd, not as catchy as the other soundtracks, but grows on you.

Kiddy Kong's really the only major thing I didn't like about DKC3. That, & Elly being really annoying at times (screw the boss battle where ya have to use him, had no idea how to do it as a kid). I recall DKC3 was one I played a lot as a kid, probably even more than DKC if memory serves correctly....but could've been due to it being a harder game for me.
