PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

All in all seems like a nice update

Youtube support
Limited mp3 support
Library organization
Shareplay
Themes

All great additions

They say there's more to be revealed later.

In coming months they say.

Joyous. I own a Ps4. I like my Ps4. But compared to MS they suck at communication. I see the October Xbone update. I see a healthy feature set. I see a preview programme completed. I see Major Nelson reaching out.

I come here. I see 'soon'. I see features missing that the competion has. I see no fire in Sonys PR manner. Theyre selling sure, but complacancy is creeping here and I do not like it.

So the games will still be in a long ass horizontal line? That was my biggest complaint. Sad that they didn't do anything. Now it'll probably in an update a year from now.

That's insane. I'm amazed that Sony still hasn't copied features of the original XBox like integrated soundtrack replacement.

Maybe Microsoft still has the patent on that or something. I have no idea what kind of deal Sony and MS do or don't have on patent licensing between the two of them for things like that.

on 360 it seems like a system level thing that was there from the get go.

Driveclub actually mutes in game music when playing music in Unlimited, I think. I could be wrong.

if this is true them maybe it's something the developer can control. try out some other games if you ever get the chance.

I hope there's more to this update than what's listed after all they've been talking about it for what feels like months.

Music support is nice if it replaces in game music, otherwise its pointless. Dlna and video playback off USB is a must so i hope Sony surprises.

Wtf, no suspend/resume, Dlna, friend online notification, or pausing downloads? Weak. And am I reading that correctly, you can't play music off of the hard drive, just a USB stick? Laughable at this point.

Yeah, I remember Sony having some cool features to announce at the event as part of their OS plans, but what was so great compared to what Microsoft showed after that, apart from a few network related stuff, like streaming or game sharing?

As I said, if someone actually thought for a second that Sony (or Nintendo for that matter) could challenge Microsoft in the OS department, they must have not been thinking straight. They never did, they don't and they most likely never will.

Can you point exactly on what features showed in Feb that's are missing.

Remote Play: Available (Impressive)
Gaikai (PSNOW) : Available (Impressive)
Share play: Coming with PSN 2.0
Suspend/Resume: TBA

They never promised something achievable aka (cloud rendering), also notice that all these features are only on Playstation, so why not we start demanding MS to have these features since they are the "OS Kings" according to some!

Yeah, pretty disappointing. Maybe we have to wait another year before we can pause downloads and watch videos :(

I'm wondering if they ran into issues streaming game data plus music from the HDD and that's why it's required to play from a USB stick.

Looks like an ok update, but I'm hoping for more. Glad to finally have YouTube support. Appear offline, seeing when friends hop online, and better performance with parties and messages is what I'm hoping for next.

Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.

hallelujah, it took so long for this.

I reckon there's more to it then that, I doubt Sony is ever gonna let us store anything media wise on the internal HDD.
this is just to keep us happy.

"oh, and the themes and color options is also great, thanks again, Sony!

I have a Themes surprise coming for everyone on 2.0 launch day. No I am not going tell you what it is."

??????

I also wouldn't mind an update to the default list of Avatars the the PS4 uses. I shouldn't have to boot up my PS3 to change avatars that I bought on the store.

The Add to Library button is the big win here for me. Will save me a ton of bandwidth and give me the ability to grab every game that is available regardless of whether I'm interested in downloading it now or later.

Most of these improvements sound decent. YouTube upload functionality doesn't make a whole lot of sense in my head - isn't everything just going to get Content ID'd? Also, the USB Music Player thing...seems amazingly amateurish. Is Sony's OS team just outfitted with a bunch of first-year interns or something?

It's not that what Sony showed before looked better than what MS showed after. It's that it looked like it'd be comparable. I liked that MS had the snap multitasking, but it didn't seem like other than that (and the TV stuff) there would be much of a difference.

Now I have the machine, and I can't even pause downloads or get notified of my friends coming online... let alone resume games from standby... and this is almost a year in. It's not quite what I was expecting.

I can see how one would disappointed in that case then, yeah.

I'm sorry that you have trouble understanding the simple fact that Microsoft is better than their competitors in software development. Just the fact that they're iterating on a monthly basis is enough to see a difference between companies.

This was probably already discussed, but is there any chance Sony will be adding MKV support along with the (hopefully) upcoming video player, considering the Xbox One supports the format?

You didn't answer my question, but its ok.

also are you saying that MS is better because they update OS more frequently?! based on this, Sony (PS3 era) must have been the best in the world because they used to roll updates bi-weekly.

These are all really good features! Sucks that the only way to play music is via a USB stick - I would much prefer DLNA, or even storing MP3s on my PS4 HDD - but it's certainly better than nothing (or Music Unlimited, which might as well be nothing). Some better content organization is welcome too, although folders would have been better than this.

Damn, is this the first update to miss out on "stability" update.

Welcome features all of them, and happy that its out soon. I'd rather incremental updates monthly with a couple of these features each time than one big motherload patch every 6 months.

Fix psn servers...
Fix messaging system...
Download queue...
Instant resume...
External usb support...
Online friend notification..

But they give us colors, theme etc....Wow what an important features...After a whole year...

I actually do have such a list:

I'm personally more interested in functionality upgrades rather than personalisation. My most desired features are:

Background music, with game music separated from game sounds (ala Xbox 360).
Smartglass remote play.
Windows Remote Desktop Connection (wishful thinking).
Skype screen broadcasting.
Allow the use of 360 peripherals (never happening...).

The difference though is that the things Sony has that Microsoft is missing, are generally features that are "nice to have" rather than "shit that really should just be there". Not being able to pause downloads is ridiculous. Not being told that my friend is now online is ridiculous. Not being able to resume a game, despite it being a prominently advertised feature months before launch, is ridiculous.

Not being able to remote play on Xbox One doesn't fall into the same category at all. Being unable to take screenshots however does... and so it's brought up in every update thread without fail.

If DLNA and video playback via USB is not included in the next update I'm switching. I'm not even joking.

At least DLNA is basically confirmed now. They'd been dancing around the question with answers like, "We're considering possibilities" for too long. Plex web will have to tide me over until then. The web interface is actually fantastic now, but the resume feature hasn't been working that well on the PS4.

This is a personal ‘must have’ for me as well. I will say that DLNA will be great when it arrives.

I doubt it. Sony makes movies and TV shows, so it would be weird if they let people play pirated copies of Sony-produced video content (most pirated content is in MKV format). Since Microsoft doesn't really make any video content, they couldn't care less what people play on their machine--it's not their material.

I'm totally going blood red with my background. Or maybe grey. Or yellow. Actually, can we just get automatically rotating colors again? That was nice on the PS3.

The USB player functionality will support music files at the 2.0 update.

So no video playback from USB, probably just DLNA for now

Sony blu Ray drives support .mkv so hopefully it will come too

Sony supports MKV on other devices though

How about install times on the PS4 versus XB1? That seems core to the OS and something that Sony had beat from the beginning. It's a huge feature that anyone espouses XB1 over PS4 always seems to ignore.

remote play and upcoming share play are truly next gen features that competitor isnt even close to having... they are huge differentiator.

they are about playing games and not watching movies.... just playing games.

play go is also another feature built in and designed to let you play games faster...

to me it just seems that they are a lot more focused on gaming part, but we all know that.

As someone who used to use the music player on ps3 all the time I'm pretty bummed out that it still isn't as good as that...

I feel like the PSP and PS3 firmwares were designed by a different group of people. Or Sony's mantra had just changed. The software on those machines were way ahead of their time.
