PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

YES!!!!!!! They really do listen. =). Even though I am still upgrading my Hard Drive I am really happy about this new feature.

There's something in there that seems like it might be NicoNico related...so probably not a US/Eu feature? But Google Translate is rough so I can't interpret it lol

don't think there is anything else that's not in the us and eu blogs but there might be more details?

The "Pass controller to visitor" will be awesome! I think it's one of the coolest features in gaming ever.

YESSSSSSSSS background music fucking yes, drive club soundtrack is gash cant wait. Off to buy a external hdd to rip all my music too. Do we think any external one will do or will it have to be self powered?.

The currently endless content bar on the home screen. Basically they are doing what I have been suggesting since launch. Limit the number of items that shows up on the content bar, because it's insanely long, and then dump everything else into the Library. It sounds from their wording like they will even be putting disc based games into the Library, which they would absolutely need to do for this to work. On top of that they are adding sorting options so that the Library is actually usable and not a complete mess.

Huh, that's good actually but if you want to select something outside those 15 games you'll need to visit the library every time. A search box could be pretty useful.

is it really so cumbersome to have a small device inserted. I mean I grew up with 5.25" / 3.5" discs so you maybe can see my puzzlement. network access is great and overdue but... usb sticks are ghetto? really?

Putting aside the fact that I've had wireless network access to my music files on PS3 and 360 for the better part of a decade...

Having dongles sticking out of the front of your machine is never a good user situation. If I'm doing a one-time transfer of some data, great. It makes sense to plug in, download, and unplug. If I'm using some controller that needs a wired connection... okay, those front USB ports work great to plug those in.

But something like music, it's a misuse of the user experience to expect us to leave a USB drive plugged in on the front. That is not what those USB ports were meant for. If there were one on the back, I could understand the use case of plugging a drive in and leaving it be. But having shit stuck into the front permanently makes no sense.

The front USB ports are for hot-swapping USB devices. Music is not one of these cases. You want music always accessable, yes? Then it shouldn't be something you stick in the front.

This is not just the ghetto for 2014. It's the ghetto for a decade ago.

Don't they make usb wifi portals that act like a normal usb drive but actually connect to a network folder?

Themes? That's awesome. Hopefully it compels Microsoft to add the same to the Xbone sooner rather than later.

And by USB music device, do they mean iPhone/iPod too?

No folders makes me a sad panda. It already takes me forever to scroll through all my stuff.

You don't need folders if you have good filtering and sorting. Pinning would be nice too but I'm glad Sony did add folders. They are going in the right direction.

You can't see the background on X1 thanks to the god aweful cluttered metro style OS. There is no point for themes on X1 unless they change the layout of the machine .

Eh, that sucks. Better than nothing I guess.

Not entirely true. Yes a lot of it is taken up by tiles but there's a whole load of space there. Plus if they just made the tiles like 75% of their current size then it wouldn't be any different to Windows 8.1 or the Xbox 360.

There is already a games folder, which they are expanding the functionality of. What in the world would you use folders for outside of games?

Really? I have at least 30 games for my PS4 and I hardly ever worry about how long it takes to scroll through. Hell, even if I go to the end it only takes like 1/1.5 seconds and the chance of me actually needing to do that is next to none.

Don’t get me wrong, it would be nice to have some form of sorting but it’s really nowhere near as bad as it was for PS3.

On Wii U, I have virtual console, full retail games, and eshop games in their own different colored folders. I also have all the other native system apps in their own folder too. Now I don't have rows of icons to sift through.

As someone mentioned earlier a search function would be good. Eg press triangle, start typing "dest", automatically goes to destiny

Once you select the game, it is moved into the top spot of your top 15 though and the bottom item is moved into your library.
It's not a perfect system but better than before. I wanted folders because I could then keep things sorted in a "finished" "not finished" sorting.

It just occurred to me why they may not be committing to friend notifications in this update. Those notifications involve pinging their servers every time one has to be sent to everyone's console. They may be worried about introducing the feature at a time when they're already struggling to keep up with network demands.

Sony isn't doing very well financially so it would be interesting to see what kind of resources they allocate to PSN. The PS4 is selling great, Plus memberships have doubled but are they putting that money back into the service?

The idea of having a USB stick plugged into the front in 2014 is just crazy to me. It'd be one thing if you could leave a USB device plugged into the back... but having something plugged into the front all the time, or being swapped in and out, is just so ghetto. I barely wanted to do that in 2005.

I have hopes that this is just the quickest way to get a music player in there to build upon later, because touching the file structure of the internal Hdd and adding DLNA are bigger jobs for later.

If they actually thought a USB function was a desirable use-case, with no eye to expand later to DLNA/internal storage, they shouldn't even have bothered.

Something seems amiss here. A long ass delay and this is what they bring while still ignoring DLNA.

When is this coming out?

For some reason they can't give a date, just hinting sometime this year.

It boggles my mind how they can create such a nice piece of hardware yet don't have a clue sometimes in other areas. Is this yet another case of Sony having too many divisions where not everyone is on the same page?

They don't really have a choice in this case. They need to have a network that can handle all their customers.
