Can't help but wonder if N6 and the Iphone 6+ are basically going to replace the Ipad mini and N7. The small tablet thing was a big hit in my house.
I hope not, because it's no where close to the same. I have a Note 3 and a 7 and I use my 7 way more when I'm at home.

Do all the N9 models have the 4G radio?

No, there's a specific 4G model, 32Gb and around $599. Might release later than the normal WiFi only versions, don't think there is a confirmed release date. Should be available through all carriers.

Well Bestbuy Canada has what they claim to be the 4G model up for preorder

But it's priced like the regular wifi only model. I guess it's a mistake?

$80 extra for 32GB?

Gahhh, it's hard to resist my want of a new Android tablet, but I'm out. I'll wait until they go for under $400 on swappa or something.

I'd be all over Nexus 9, but 4:3 is a dealbreaker.

I am assuming we will see N9 third party covers without the keyboard in time. Nice ones too. Not those huge thick ones I kept on seeing for the N7. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

On the aspect ratio, I would have preferred a 3:2 ratio like the Surface Pro 3, but 4:3 is fine given how little useful screen real estate I was seeing with my N7.

Weird, 4:3 is exactly what makes the Nexus 9 so interesting. I'm sure (and you can see from the responses above) that many people went with iPad due to the better screen ratio.

16:10 or 16:9 only really makes sense for video, and for anything else 4:3 gives a better or equal view. Where it really shines though is web-browsing and apps that involve a lot of reading of texts.

Now that the specs have been shown off for the Nexus 6, do you guys still think it's worth getting a Moto X 2014?

How does the S801 @ 1080p compare to the S805 @ 2k? Is the GPU bump significant from the adreno 330 to the 420?

Two of the apps I use most involve a lot reading and are easily best in 16:10. (comics related)
I see no advantage for 4:3 in anything. How is it better for web browsing?

Does anyone know if the Nexus 9 will truly support turbo charging? Several outlets reported that it will but it's not mentioned on the official Nexus 9 product page from what I can see.

Further, I've read that Motorola's turbo charger requires "Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0" in order to work its magic. It would seem that the Nexus 9 would need its own proprietary fast charging solution to play along with the K1.

Obviously comics aren't text, but images with text balloons, when I said text, I specifically meant actual text. Also comics in particular are a bad example, because in both cases you have bars, just vertical bars vs horizontal bars. I've found comics to be on par on either ratio, but obviously comics benefit more from increased size (7" versus the iPad Mini's 7,9" for instance) and retina displays more than aspect ratio differences.

As for web browsing, like text, the extra width makes websites much better, both in portrait mode (extra width allows for easier reading due to longer text lines, also displays images larger) and landscape (16:10 makes the displayed area way too small in landscape mode completely destroying any kind of overview).

With comics, the bars on the left and right are slivers in 16:10. They're so small I've had to point them out to people. 4:3 is better for two-page spreads, but those are a small minority.
And why would anyone ever browse in portrait on a wide display?

Posted this on the DroidGAF Google+ group, but yeah. Nexus 9 is up on Amazon UK:

  • Black/White 16GB: £319
  • Black/White 32GB: £399
  • Black 32GB LTE: £459

Jesus Christ that is expensive. It is certainly giving me pause for thought. I need a new tablet to replace my N7 (2012) which is having digitiser problems, slow downs and the USB port just decided to not work (charging the tablet using the Asus dock). But still 300 quid is a bit excessive for my tastes.

I think at this point I might just go with Nvidia's Shield tablet, the £239 pricing looks far more attractive to me than the £319 for the N9. Only problem is I have zero faith in any long term OS support for the Shield from Nvidia.

In reality, it's the successor to the Nexus 10, rather than the Nexus 7. These prices are identical if you think about it that way. Also, it's a pretty damn powerful tablet. Tegra K1 is no slouch. I ended up buying a 32gb one in white, because I'm an idiot, but I do use my N7 2013 several hours a day.

I think nvidia will support the Shield tablet for some time, its pretty much stock Android anyway. Plus, they've already committed to Lollipop.

Those prices have got to be a place holder, i'll wait to see what prices Google put on there site.

Otherwise those prices are a joke and i'm going straight for the Nvidia Shield

about the same price as an iPad Air but smaller screen? Seems a bit expensive

It's a "premium" device, unlike the N7. I think they'll keep that on the Play Store. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with the Store update today. It'll be telling if the N5/N7 get removed along with the N10.

For all you Yuropean folks, the screen of the Nexus 6 is exactly the size of a 20 euro note.

Looks like the Nexus 5 is being kept around, unupgraded

wat are you doing google?
They did upgrade it . It's called the nexus 6. Just like iPhone 5s was upgraded to iPhone 6 but still kept around.

Not sure why so many hoped Google would update the 5 internals when releasing their new nexus as well. Google has never once done that as part of the nexus program so I am not sure where the hope/expectation was coming from?

Nexus 5 was made by LG right? Wonder if Motorolas headsets can match LG quality

The better be a lot better. My N5 has cracks all along the edge by the SIM slot just from changing the SIM card frequently while traveling using the supplied tool. The phone had never been dropped or handled poorly. N5 build quality is less than ideal.

The Moto X was fantastic, my only issue was I ordered a custom color and the color seemed to fade off? They got me a replacement without a hassle months after I bought it though. The X2 feels great as well, solid phone.

Can't report the same - my Nexus 5's have all been pretty solid. I had one issue with it as well and Google took care of it (SIM card tray stopped working).

Funny, I have the exact same crack. Boo.

Looks like the Nexus 6 will be my next phone since it seems unlikely Sprint is going to get the Z3. I really don't want such a big phone, though. I wish they were releasing a phone with a 5" screen as well.

Question, is 4:3 a good ratio if I'm mostly using this thing for watching videos? That's not to say that I'll be using the nexus 9 exclusively for watching videos.

I've been using my N10 almost every day for nearly two years and I think 16:9 for a tablet doesn't work all that well. It's better for videos (you'll get black bars at the top and bottom watching 16:9 movies on a 4:3 screen) but not ideal for reading, browsing, or one-handed use.

I'll still wait and see if 5.0 improves the performance and battery life of the N10 in any meaningful way, but the N9 seems like a clear upgrade to me.

if any of you have a microcenter by you.

You should try and check out a 10" winbook its got the quad core baytrail atom a micro sd and a full usb 3.0 slot for 200 bucks. battery life doesnt seem too bad either. its a full windows 8.1 tablet too. im going to buy the 140 dollar one to use as my htpc.

I guess we will need some bend tests, so see if it is nearly as strong as the moto x test. I don't want a Playdoh phone like the 6+.

The Nexus 9 looks so good with Tegra K1 and 4:3 Screen, but why are the storage options 16GB and 32GB? It costs an extra $80 to upgrade to 32GB?

Sigh, I guess I'll wait for a price glitch or for the next Nexus 9.

Hm Nexus 9 or iPad...

That Material Design dawg. Honestly iOS still has an edge on Android in terms of app support for tablets, but it's getting narrower every day, and I'm sure MD will help, and greatly depends on your needs and usage. I myself have never had an issue or felt limited by what apps were available.

I think you're right. I should upgrade too. How does the N9 compare to other tablets? How 'hig-end' is the N9? I don't know much about specs.
