Gematsu: Sony to hold Playstation Experience event in December

Do you know definitely whether Sony actively assessed whether to acquire Crytek, or are you surmising from Tidux's vague tweets?

Neither. I assume based on my own professional experience that when a company is up for sale, all other companies in related industries with the sufficient financial capabilities would at least do their homework and check in on the situation to see if there's a buying opportunity there that makes sense for them. It's standard business protocol.

Well, you're right.

But, I don't think Sony would have any interest in acquiring Crytek for their game portfolio.

Their value would be in tech like CryEngine.

I don't disagree with that, and maybe that's what they were looking at - to buy certain assets rather than the whole company, similar to how MS tried to buy the Ryse IP.

Sony schould buy Mistwalker and let Sakaguchi create the #FinalFantasyKiller

That'd be nice, but I doubt Sakaguchi would go for that. He started Mistwalker so he can be the boss and do whatever he wants. I don't think he wants to work for a corporation ever again.

Sony has a reputation that is quite different to Square when it comes to handling their dev studios. I think he wouldn´t mind having the backing of Sony for creating his next projects, as well as the backing of ICE.

Yes, please. Level 5, FROM software, Hironobu Sakaguchi´s team.

Honestly, I could see Sony getting him snatched up, but honestly, if they are going with him, I'd buy the Lost Odyssey IP from MS (they own part of it) and put it on the PS4 and/or make a sequel.

But didnt Sakaguchi have some Problems with the Sony CEO in the past?? Are there still problems or is everything cleared

Why else didnt he bring out a single Playstation Game in the past years?

But Microsoft and Nintendo got some titles....

I know it's weak speculation, started by Tidux no less, but if Sony were to buy Crytek then that would be a really dumb fucking decision on their part. There's a multitude of better ways to spend your money.

Back in the early days of the PS3 he was asked why he isn't making games for it and he said it was because the architecture is tricky and because he doesn't like Kutaragi. Kutaragi's gone and the PS4 is easy to develop for. But who knows if there will ever be a collaboration between Sony and Mistwalker. There really hasn't been any talk of that since Sakaguchi made those comments.

Indeed, Crytek isn't worth buying, they're currently in trouble, don't have vision (making clones of popular games now, before: soulless games that relied on graphics), besides Sony has GG for the tech and graphics stuff(although most WWS studios are impressive on that department). What they need to acquire are good game/creative directors.

IGA comes to mind, he is frustrated that he was unable to make a good 3D game yet, what better candidate than Japan Studio to collaborate on a 3D title

Sakaguchi/Mistwalker for the alleged secret JRPG. Seriously they will not quit the industry on mobile games.

It would be pointless, if anyone I'd think Microsoft would be interested.

Sony, would probably acquire studios instead of behemoths like Crytek.

If Sony want to buy a studio then they should buy Hello Games. Those guys are on the very cusp of breakout success. It's plain to see they're going places once No Man's Sky is out.

Welcome to our Playstation Experience Event !

We are kicking this off with our brand new "exclusive" game a lot have been waiting for!!

Lights pls!

lights go out , a light shines unto a casket and smokes everywhere ... It opens up and yu suzuki pops out with a grin on his face "KEPT YOU WAITING HUH"

back to my class

Well...

There was a rumor that Sony tried to buy Hello Games right before No Man's Sky announcement but they wanted to release the PC version. But if Hello Games can't get the game running to how they want and they get help from Sony's external devs then it would be exclusive.

Keeping my expectations at rock bottom, as usual.

- Sony purchases Retro Studios from Nintendo and announces them as the developer of a new 2.5D Crash Bandicoot

- Gravity Rush 2 is cancelled; Gravity Rush 3 is announced for PSV/PS4

- Capcom surprise releases Street Fighter 5 this December as an early access dev-alpha exclusive to PS+ owners

- RIME is announced as a free PS+ game as an apology for the Driveclub fiasco, and is too delayed for a year

Anything more is just gravy.

Isn't he working on something? What happened to that teaser flier from PAX that was made to look like it came from a 90's video game magazine? Rumor was it was connected to Iga.

Ah ok thanks. So basically there is no excuse anymore ! Hope Sony is taking the inniative and will devote themself to Sakaguchi

I also found this

Asked if there was a chance to see a new The Last Story game , Sakaguchi-san answered in English “Ok, yeah, you talk to Nintendo.”
Then the moderator of the panel asked who in the audience would want to see a sequel of The Last Story on Wii U, and while the audience cheered and applauded, Sakaguchi-san added, again in English, “And maybe PlayStation 4 too?”/

Edit: It may have been that ^^^^^^

I remember in a recent interview where he talked about Terra Battle, they asked about a sequel to one of his games and what companies would he like to work with. He mentioned Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony as viable as long as they were willing to fund the project.

Can´t find the source though.

The buying Crytek rumour seems a bit unbelievable. Their ip's are not good and their tech is equaled by internal studios already. I mean the only credence the rumor has is if Sony needs a studio to make FPS games (I know a lot of people don't want to hear it, but GG does not make good FPS games). If GG wants to move away from FPS games, Sony would need a new team to make them. But there would have to be better studios out there to get for that (perhaps if the rumor is true, it might be because crytek is desperate and cheap).

I have a bad feeling that to get new studios into the fold, Sony will end up closing a few to free up some money.

Also there are studios like RAD or Housemarque which have worked with Sony for a long time and always seemed like logical choices for the next acquisition (although we know how those assumptions worked out for insomniac)

Looking at Sony's studios they have 5 NA based (althought their 1 development helping studio recently made CounterSpy? Maybe they'll turn into active development)5 EU based(albeit one of their studios was transformed to sister studio), but only 2 Japan based. Yeah, they could use Japanese one.

...But I dont think there are viable studios buy at the moment. :/
What would there be?
They missed a chance with Atlus.

Please don't be Crytek.

Anything but Crytek. If that is all they can buy they are better not buying anything. Best idea is to pretend they are interested in Crytek to see if MS will fall for it and spend unnecessary money.

Where'd all this Sony buying a studio thing come from? Are there actually legitimate rumors that they're looking into buying something?

It's worth noting that Sony has multiple teams inside many of their studios, which I think is more efficient for managing operating costs and also management among the divisions and sharing code and workload.

I'm sure he wouldn't mind the financial backing. So I can see him partnering up with Sony to work on a couple of projects, similar to Mizayaki on Bloodborne, but I don't think he'll agree to Mistwalker being bought outright.

Who the heck is FlamingHawk?!

That's very interesting if true though.

Lol I'm no one also definitely not a "insider", just part of this forum. The rumor is coming from this.

However they took that down, but in the article it said something like this which is a quote I found trying to find the article.

"There seems to be a rumor right now that No Man's Sky will be console exclusive to PS4 indefinitely just like Transistor. The rumor also states that Sony and Hello Games were in active discussion about Sony acquiring the studio but it seems those plans have stalled for now. Yet, Hello Games seems to be working closely with Media Molecule so there may still be a chance that relations improve and a new deal could be made."

^-----That quote is not from the article but from a forum post that describes what the article is talking about since it was taken down.

Holy shit, I just noticed it said Media Molecule.....

Could Media Molecules new IP been what Sean Murray was talking about? @TheSakeDiary is also followed by Media Molecule.

Yes, in the vein of Celebrity Deathmatch - it can be Gaming Personalities Deathmatch.

The announcer from Mortal Kombat will introduce the ''fighters'' - first fight will be the return of Don Mattrick and Jack Tretton to beat the crap outta eachother for what went down at E3 2013.

$100 on Jack.

You know who Sony should buy? A fricken Japanese studio for once.

It's not typical of Sony to acquire a studio if they don't already have a long working relationship together, so aside from From Software and perhaps Level 5 that kind of excludes most Japanese studios (and I know From are no longer independent).

Myself, were I looking to buy a Japanese developer, I would give serious consideration to Matrix Software, Platinum (obviously), Silicon Studios and Acquire. Acquire because I think they make the foundations of good games (Way of the Samurai, Shinobido), but they need more money and direction to build the framework on top. Japan Studios could provide that direction IMO.

Capcom is the one I would be looking at, so many great IPs.

Looool eskimopress... Yep that's basically the same as the Tidux rumor about Sony buying Crytek.
Likely BS

I suppose so, but I dont think they are fast enough for current audience. So much need for games. Maybe this is just overblown big time by forums.

I do think they havent been that 'fast', althought you wouldnt want to get rushed games either.

Guerrilla has 2 teams, but gosh darn technically we havent heard of anything from the other one for years. Unless Shadow Fall was made by the oher one & KZ3 team is behind that leaked game.

I guess Naughty Dog got their releases faster now, althought remasters are obviously faster made.

SSM I have no idea, since they were hurt very badly by cancellation. Maybe they have 2 teams, but still at early phases?

...How many even have multi teams? Does Sucker Punch or Evolution have them?

I think you're all looking into this a little too much. I'm not sure where the rumour originates from or from what time, but I'm guessing it's due to the issues Crytek has been having this year. Seems like a lot of folks jumping the gun about something which isn't true.

We know that Bloodborne is coming to PS4 and it's Souls related (come on, we all know this), so, doesn't this make it possible that Dark Souls 3 could be a PS4 exclusive too? Could that be the shock 3rd person perspective game with amazing lighting that's going to make people rage?

Would Sony have any interest in Capcom?

Surely, their IP catalog would be tremendously valuable.

How much ballpark would Capcom be worth in an acquisition deal?

Capcom afaik has a market cap over a billion. And they have some insanely valuable IPs too like Street Fighter. It will not be cheap and Sony won't spend that kind of money on a video game company, not with their current financial situation.

I think if they were to acquire a JP company it would be small-mid in terms of size. Heck I think From Software might be a very good acquisition.

An interesting theory, but I get the feeling that Hello Games want to stay indie. However they do have a history with Sony and their design philosophy would match that of Media Molecule very well, so who knows.
