iOS Gaming October 2014: We didn't even know this was releasing on iOS

Is the helix game any good? I haven't really seen any impressions of it yet

I'm thinking of getting corrypt too but I wonder how long it is...

Can't believe that Kairosoft keeps releasing games at $4.99. The number of reviews has slowed to a crawl but they haven't reverted to a more reasonable $2.99 or thereabouts price. 65 reviews for World Cruise Story which has been out for 7 months. Surely they'll eventually reverse course? I still enjoy all their games, but they're effectively the same thing every time. No one is going to pay an absurdly high, premium price with that regularity.

do they do sales often?

well tbf, imo the only 2 kairosoft games that were fantastic were game dev story and mega mall story. Others all had pacing issues.

$5 = absurdly high premium price?

Seems to go in spurts. They usually put a lot of stuff on sale whenever they do a sale.

I think those are probably the best, but I've ultimately enjoyed them all. Ninja Village, Pocket League Story and Gran Prix Story were particularly good. But either way, the point remains that many of them are effectively a re-skin and should be priced accordingly.

$5 = absurdly high premium price?
Anything over $1.99 is a premium price for an iOS app IMO. $2.99 is pushing it, beyond that.. you're going to struggle to convince me. I bought a few of their games at $3.99 when they moved to that price level, but that stopped after the first one or two. It's the equivalent of charging $90, $120, $150, etc. for a console game.

What's your Faraway handle? I just started last night and am trying to desperately not get hopelessly addicted... My name is Eirikur, be my friend?

Been playing faraway kingdom too, definitely see the comparison to tiny tower and happy street, but it seems pretty good so far, and fairly deep for a F2P game, I usually hit the pay walls in these games and stop but it's too early to tell on this one

My name in game is gazele if anyone wants to add

So, I've noticed that some people were asking for SRPG recommendations.

Aside from the obvious responses (FFT, Banner Saga, XCOM, etc), there are a couple of hidden gems I would like to recommend. LostStar Tactics and Tactics Maiden. Both are full of strategic gameplay, are challenging and have plenty of customization options. Tactics Maiden in particular, is quite deep and the AI is brilliant. LostStar has a cool deck building element to it, and sci fi is always a welcome change of pace (unless you were playing XCOM).

If you can get past the rough visuals (specially of Tactics Maiden), you will be hooked by the great gameplay. I myself had some trouble even trying Tactics Maiden due to the amateurish presentation, but I'm glad I did, because it's super fun. It's free to try, so no reason not to. The game has a $5 price tag to unlock, but has over 80 scenarios to play and lasts for over 30 hours, so there's plenty of bang for your buck.

LostStar is iPhone only but it plays fine on iPad.

This perception of value as it relates to mobile games is why the often raised suggestion of "Instead of F2P you should have released it as a $4.99 paid app. I'd totally pay that!" is just not viable. The number of people willing to drop more than a couple of bucks on a mobile game is small.

Heck, I'm a mobile game dev and publisher and even I don't usually pay more than a couple of bucks. Most of what I've downloaded is free and I almost never buy IAP.

At the same time, I don't consider s$4.99 an "unreasonable" pricepoint, and I certainly wouldn't consider it analogous to charging $150 for a console title.

It really is disappointing. That mentality is so frustrating to see. A dev's hard work, months or sometimes even years of effort, not even worth a few bucks? Games that people wouldn't give a moment's hesitation if they were $5 or $10 PC games? It shouldn't be like that, totally not fair for the devs who try to make quality IOS games

Agreed.

While I go look for some aspirin, I'd like to see the insane math you used to come up with those figures.

The bane of all mobile developers who want to make something awesome and not F2P. ><

Haven't tried Mega Mall, I've got Game Dev, Epic Astro, Dungeon Village and the farming game.

Hopefully CR2 gets a discount soon.
I'm sure it will when the trilogy hits Vita. I think I'm going to pass on iOS and go for Vita for this franchise.

It's more like Tiny Tower when it comes to town/dungeon building than how Dungeon Village works. Also- the raiding in Faraway Kingdom give it gameplay that actually feels like an RPG battle system, not just a sim-game. FK is completely awesome. Definitely try it if you liked Dungeon Village.
Thank you, good sir!
FFFffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff I had a wicked Tiny Tower addiction. And real RPG gameplay? Oh snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!!!!!!!

It's not out in Japan so I can't get this game just yet.

What's your Faraway handle? I just started last night and am trying to desperately not get hopelessly addicted... My name is Eirikur, be my friend?

Faraway Kingdom handle is Flunkie44, and I'd appreciate if you let me know you were adding me and it helps if your in-game name is the same as GAF, as I get roughly 10 requests per day and it's taxing to go through them all. Also, for those playing Faraway, change your avatar to your highest ranked/most helpful hero! It makes people want to add you because having high ranked friends is crucial to getting far.

And I'm currently only accepting GAF members and those whose avatars are high level epic AND/OR are actually active (looking at you colinp and Tunesmith, who have both added me but are at level 1 stil!!!), but feel free to add me still! My standing friend requests are piling up quickly. Friend requests with 1* and 2* Epic avatars are currently just sitting in my inbox because I've tried to fill it with mostly 3*/4*/5* Epic Heroes.

Loving this game. I have 6 Epics now and really getting into the whole loot set collecting now that we're starting to figure out where everything drops. Also, tips for beginners are to group your heroes in houses according to their element, as later in the game (after you get 38 dungeons deep) you get the Pantheon which gives you +2 of a certain element for every corresponding hero with that element in the house. So if you want to prepare for endgame stuff early on so that you don't have to spend a bunch of crystals (essentially watching a ton of videos) moving your guys around, it's something to keep in mind... as endgame is probably having upgraded 5* Epic heroes with a full upgraded loot set living in a +2 house.

The best thing this game establishes for F2P games going forward (hopefully)? The energy system. I've only run out of energy twice and that was early in the game. You're constantly getting it and leveling up to fill your bar and getting more from friends that it's rarely an issue for me. I'm currently sitting with 82/28 energy, all from friends, all given within the last 6 hours.

This is the most stupid reasoning I've read in ages.

Just ordered a 32gb 1st gen iPad Air last night as soon as the price went down after the new announcement. Saved myself over €120 compared to what it used to be.

Anyway, how is Xcom on the iPad Air? Does it run well? Does it have Enemy Within?

Any other good RPGs? I have KOTOR (which wasn't great on my old iPad 2 - looking forward to playing that on my new iPad). How's The Banner Saga?

Sinking my teeth into this one at the moment, replaying Episode 1 first. Soooooo good!
The trailer linked is for Episode 2, this is the Episode 1 trailer: http://youtu.be/uslOlUSh0Pc

A IMO seminal point & click adventure with shades of Another World and Half-Life. A must-get to any fan of the genre.

I don't play point and clicks often, but I got Machinarium (currently $0.99), really enjoying it. Very charming, lovely art style, clever puzzles

My favorite adventure game would be Gemini Rue. I have a soft spot for sci fi noir

I heard Xcom was good on Air 1. KOTOR ran pretty flawlessly on my iPad 2 though.

The air was their highest spec'd device though, all games should run pretty well on it for a while.

Without shadows and grass though, which makes the game look quite a bit uglier in some areas.

Silent Age is dystopian sci-fi, try the first episode and I'd be surprised if you don't want episode 2 after that. :)

Some cool hidden gems I recommend checking out. All are free

Strung Along
https://itunes.apple.com/app/id916441987
Take control of a puppet as you literally walk your way from start to finish!
Strung Along lets you control a wooden stage puppet step by step, literally. Avoid obstacles by walking, jumping and grabbing onto things. The game features a wide array of different acts with platforming, balancing and timing puzzles. There is also the endless mode to perfect and practice your moves and stay upright as long as possible.

screen520x924.jpeg
Reminiscent of QWOP and the recently released Daddy Long Legs, Strung Along takes the act of walking and crafts a tricky platformer around that simple task. You control a puppet through numerous levels, one button for each leg. Extend too far in a single step or tumble off a platform, and you’ll snap the strings holding up your character and be forced to restart. The levels start off simple enough, with only steps to climb and gaps to cross, but soon you’ll be walking along moving platforms, hanging from hooks, and jumping over barrels. Between level times and step pars to beat, as well as an endless mode, Strung Along offers a nice amount of variety and content for free. The colorful stage play aesthetic completes this fun challenging experience.

Transmission
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/transmission-connect-to-communicate/id917778256
Transmission, a new puzzle game from the Science Museum, challenges you to create increasingly complex networks, weaving connections to communicate ever greater amounts of information.

screen1136x1136.jpeg
The most apt description of Transmission would be LYNE meets Type Rider. Type Rider was a platformerthrough the history of typography and fonts, and in a similar fashion, Transmission is a puzzler fashioned around the history of communication. Created by Science Museum to promote their upcoming Information Age exhibit, Transmission has you connecting and filling in nodes, a la LYNE. However, this isn’t a clone; each chapter is based on a new era of communication. From the simple one-use paths of the Telegram, to multiple receivers of the Telephone, to more mechanics inspired by Computers, Satellites, and more, Transmission uses its concept in numerous clever ways, offering challenging puzzles and a polished presentation.

Tap Lander
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tap-lander/id911284114
Pilot your lander through increasingly large and perilous caverns in this retro-styled arcade game.
Avoid numerous hazards and collect fuel as you use your precision flying skills to land your ship safely.

screen1136x1136.jpeg
Tap Lander is a Lunar Lander-style precision game. The controls are simple - tilt to move horizontal, tap to active your thrusters. The basic controls and minimal vector graphics belie Tap Lander's challenging gameplay. Set in twisting claustrophobic levels, you must navigate through tight corridors with limited fuel; one touch against the walls or any of the hazards means restarting. It's a game of extreme precision and finesse, with responsive controls and great level design. The initial download grants you 12 "Novice" levels (don't be fooled, even the Novice levels are tough), and $1.99 IAP unlocks 36 increasingly difficult and complex levels.

well to answer my own question, helix is great. the controls are really good and its a lot of fun.

not sure there is a lot of depth to it but its a good quick game to play

So I have an iPad 4 and an iPad Air side by side. I figured I'd try out a Metal game to see the improvements. I downloaded Defenders.

Surprise: it looks the same on both, but runs better (like, twice the framerate) on the iPad 4. What the hell?

Whut... how? How are you getting this conversion factor?

Same for me on Ghost Trick. Tried playing it since I was on a trip a couple of weeks ago and got immediate crashes after I restored my chapters.

Is it still being wonky? I looked it up online and a review on the iTunes store and someone mentioned that it had gotten a fix, but it didn't have a date on the review, so it could be referring to an older version.

Reminds me of the fact that as far as I can tell, every single SE game is going to break on Android with the next version (because of no ART support).

SE games break almost every Android release. It's a pain in the ass because they also take forever to fix them!

Also, anyone try Jack B. Nimble? Sounds good but have had plenty of platformers/auto runners to play with lately.
