Speaking of Kuvira are we assuming that the moments where she speaks softly off the cuff to her comrades is 100% fake? That she's just manipulating people? Or is that her personality? I kind of hate those evil moments like when the camera pans to her grinning or having an evil look. Or that "I always get what I want line". So uh is she evil evil and that's the real her? Anything else is fake?

Yeah the evil smirks are extremely unnecessary, and really take away from what is otherwise a nicely done, morally grey character.

Except that every time someone earthbends in either series they're making a movement. A step, a hand gesture, whatever.

My point is that against Korra, Toph made maybe one movement overall and still did all that earthbending. She basically just dodged, blinked, and then she was sliding around like Iceman.

I just watched it again, she defo moves. They aren't huge extravagant movement, but they are there. For instance, she turns her body in a rotating motion and it sends mud curling into Korra. When Korra tries to sneak attack her and gets swiped by mud again, it goes to a shot of Toph with her arm outstretched. I think you need to watch again more closely.

I can't help but feel that Book 4 Episode 1 was meant to be part of an hour premiere to finish off with Episode 2, and that Episode 3 also feels like the first half of what was intended to be an hour block. But maybe that's all wishful thinking.

Wow.

but what about the Earth Emperor that had the bear? He was pretty stupid. You even see a stuffed version of it at the photo booth.

I won't be surprised if Wu doesn't win back the Earth Kingdom or if he does it is just as a figurehead with voted in politicians like with England. Republic city went from ambassadors to a president so this makes sense to me. The Earth Kingdom is too big for just one ruler.

That king was surprisingly smart, actually. He was goofy, sure, but when the avatar came to him, he rationally gave them a reasonable benefit of the doubt and allowed them to make their case. He only rejected them when he found that they didn't have enough evidence to actually prove anything about Long Feng. Then, when they did, he made the appropriate adjustment.

He was too trusting and naive and that was what allowed Long Feng to fool him for so long, but he was an intelligent and reasonable person. And the Earth Queen's problem wasn't that she was stupid, it was that she was evil.

They do make a lot of episodes part of two or three story long arches. In fact, that's what wen wrong with how Book 3 aired. Bryan even said that he was disappointed with how episodes got paired. There was no reason for the first three to air together, as the third one was meant to be paired with the fourth, and the fifth with the sixth, etc.

So maybe that's what is happening again with Book 4, only this time they want to stretch it out as much as possible, with only one episode per week.

my mind is telling me no....
. . . yes

He didn't have any dialogue or conversations. He was an actual prop.

Calling it, Kuvira will somehow harness an avatar-state like power by absorbing a bunch of spirits after this.

Kuvira will transform using the Vaatu vines to become giant Vaatuvira, with a plant theme, Korra will fight her and it will be as epic as the dark avatar..

on second thought that's not as sexy it sounded

*hurl*

Kuvira will definitely cause a major spirit world rift and quite possible split the big earth kingdom into various nations. maybe this is the best course. a Pyrrhic victory for team avatar.

I'm thinking it's manipulation. What gives it away is when she walks over and puts her hand on Bolin's shoulder. Touch has influence.
Maybe Kuvira is the one who removes Korra's mercury
, then they make out spitting the mercury back in each other's mouths
What the hell am I reading?!

Much better.

Pretty good episode overall but Toph seemed so....off. I know it's hard showing these characters as adults but it seems they went too far with the kooky old lady thing. To make it worse they went from young Toph to super serious chief Toph back to laid-back "I don't give a fuck" Toph.

There was something up with Kuvira's voice too.

I just finished playing some Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus and this franchise so needs a Senran Kagura style game. Get all the women of the Avatarverse and that's all you need.

and so I was thinking, how clutch would it be if Varric got airbending during harmonic convergence and has been keeping it a secret until the right moment

That would be interesting but i'm totally expecting him to build a giant mech or ship of some sort.
Get some giant mech fights in this.

While I acknowledge that Toph is probably the most powerful earth bender ever, I think that Aang, or any skilled airbender, would be able to beat Toph in a fight.

Kuvira and the Earth Kingdom to me is looking like post-WWI Germany and the popular support that allowed the transition from Kaiser Wilhelm to Hitler. Napoleon might be a better analogy though.

Anyway, I guess the most important thing we don't know about her is her past. That's why we can't really get a bead on whether or not she's manipulating the people around her. How long did she live in Zaofu? At what point did she gain those ambitions? I would imagine she started out wanting to help and struck out on her own after Suyin refused, and just decided to stay in power after seeing how incompetent Wu was. And along the way, she was corrupted by a combination of the taste of power and a succession of small but escalating compromises.

In that case, I find it hard to believe she's just manipulating her lieutenants. They would be the people she knew before she became her current self. The only way I could see her deliberately using people at this point is if she had aspirations of power long before she ever came to prominence. In that case she's pretty much a played-straight villain.

Toph was always crazy OP. And it makes complete sense as well. Bending is established as being something you have to understand and connect with on a spiritual and cultural level as much as being talented at it, and Toph has the means for a better understanding of Earthbending than anyone. She learned it from the very first Earthbenders, and her blindness and ability to be totally aware of her surroundings is the quintessential attribute of Earthbending. Lin may have the ability to see with Earthbending as well from season 1, but Toph sees that way 100% of the time. Bending is part of her. So naturally she would be the most powerful Earthbender there is (and probably the most powerful bender in the show period).

I think this too, especially after checking out old clips of ATLA Toph. ATLA Toph, honestly, would probably wreck almost anyone who's appeared in LoK so far. The scale of her feats pretty much puts her on her own level.

I was watching the episode with 8 other people. We all came to the conclusion that Wu is gay.

Never. F*****. Again.

I'm cutting half of #Korrasquad out next time because some of them talk to f****** much

Time to rewatch the episode.

Heck get a lavabender up against Toph. I could see Toph having some difficulty fighting when the floor is lava.
RIP Ghazan :(

Well the dude wanted some earth bending dames and even hit on Kuvira of all people. He's more arrogant, pampered and stupid than anything else.

Im excited that they haven't shown Bolin bending yet. Im hoping for some mind blowing lava bending that is the reason Kuvira wants to keep him around.

The thing about this is, she actually has supporters who don't want another idiot member of the royal family. They already had a King and Queen who didn't give a shit

Azulon, and Ozai has the support of the people too. Didn't make them right. Particularly I'd she moves on Zaofu like she promises. No one thinks Wu should be running anything. And kuvira seizing power when she did was probably the right move. But subjugation people under a military dictatorship would be ultimately no different them the Earth Queen. She still has a change to be in charge but walk a more enlightened path. We'll have to see how this unfold and how Korra will help mold things.
