Hello Games would be a fantastic pickup for Sony. They seem to have a really good relationship with Sean Murray.

Getting No Mans Sky locked down along with the procedural tech algorithms locked down and mixed with the ICE team could turn into something truly extraordinary in the future. No Mans Sky COULD be one of the biggest games of 2015 already loaded with big games and could be one of the best new franchises to ever be made. A universe with endless potential.

Wonder what it is Murray saw though.

I think we'll only see a small trailer of U4 (maybe they'll reveal the antagonist), usually ND does gameplay reveals during E3 (U2 and TLOU).

If a studio is going to be acquired, then the development relationship needs to be considered, their value, the costs necessary for the acquisition, and how they're going to fit into the overall SCE WWS portfolio of talent. That last part is key. Generally, you should be thinking smaller.

Capcom is not small, and there are better ways to benefit from them already. That kind of acquisition would be painful in several ways considering its scale. It's not realistic. I can see the value in everything they hold, and the long-term ideas some gamers would have which is why this question comes up, but then surely it would be easier to simply invest much less in a smaller studio, and keep an eye on that future potential and creation of our own IPs.

No. And also, far too big.

The question you should ask is, is there much point paying to buy an IP that does okay, when it's easier to not pay and produce your own IP which could also very easily do okay, if not much more?

To bring back these kind of IP, it'd be smarter for collaboration efforts, rather than investing the money and purchasing the IP outright. Then you have to make good on those costs, and use that IP, which means putting in resources, and time, which could have also been used elsewhere. This is also neglecting that you have plenty of people at over a dozen studios who are creative minds, and have their own ambitions and ideas for projects. That also has to be taken into account by those managing things.
Thanks for the insights. I see a lot of, "Let's just buy this popular thing!" but I don't think it's a good strategy. It's better to build solid relationships with small teams, and try to create something new. Really, with a solid relationship, it really doesn't matter who owns who; you just work together for your mutual benefit.

It's be great if Atlus was ready to show a new trailer for Persona 5. I think that series has reached a point in the west where Sony would show it prominently at one of their major shows. So if not here then maybe E3?

I would like Sony to revive IPs they already own tho...such a great list of IPs not being used now. Wild Arms, Colony Wars, Dark Cloud, Arc the Lad, Siren, Mark of Kri etc. So much damn potential and the current popularity of the PS4 would make it an ideal platform to breath new life into these

They've got some really great brands which could do very well if they were revived. For instance, Siren because stealth-horror games are big at the moment, Colony Wars because of Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous bringing about a renaissance of the genre, The Getaway because Everything Is Open World®, Dark Cloud because action RPGs are a big deal right now, The Legend of Dragoon because millions of us are craving a decent traditional JRPG, The Mark of Kri if they want their own Arkham style combat action game, and Alundra because I really want a new Alundra game!!

They might lack the number of stone cold classics that Nintendo has, but they've got loads of brilliant dormant IPs and it's maddening when it's obvious that many of them could be successful in today's market.

It does baffle me personally that Sony are sitting on a goldmine of IP and doing nothing with them, but they obviously just don't see any market appeal for them. Plus all their studios are working on things already.
Could outsource some, even just set them up as £20 PSN titles, I think that'd be great to slot them in between the big releases.
We can only hope, but I think Sony just don't feel like they'd do well enough.

Absolutely agree. The diversity of their IPs are really great and depending on what's the new big thing when it comes to genre they can revive the IP. Siren as you said for example could do really really well.

I do want a new Mark of Kri tho...big time...but doubt it will happen :(

I think most of those great old IPs go unused because by and large, Sony let their developers do whatever they want, and I think than most developers would rather work on their own game, and try to make a great new IP.

That's why Sony has such a long and storied history of producing great IPs.

I'll be disappointed if it's Uncharted 4. It's nothing new and everybody and their mother knows it's gonna be amazing.

The same could be said about the next Mass Effect and tell me you wouldn´t freak out if they showed a trailer of that.

Besides, an Uncharted 4 gameplay trailer would answer alot of burning questions.
Can the game possibly look like the E3 trailer in gameplay?
Can it look even better?
Did they fix Elena after whatever happened in Uncharted 3?
Is Sully´s mustache still the best thing since sliced bread?

The more cynical side of things also need to look back and realise that most of those old IPs are not gold mines.

Siren, Alundra, Dark Cloud, etc... all this titles wasn't exactly blockbusters, and sequels did not exactly showcase growth for some of said IPs. (like Dark Cloud)

In many ways, it kinda makes more sense to push forth with new IPs and new ideas, rather than try to bring back old IPs, especially if you don't have any new ideas of how to rejuvenate that franchise, other than creating a HD version of an old game that never sold that well in the first place.

I can literally imagine what Uncharted 4 looks like and I probably won't be too far off. Not the same with Mass Effect.

Well, it was originally a 'Winter 2014' game, hopefully it hasn't slipped so far to be featured at the next E3.

They should just buy Suda 51 and get him to work on Fire Pro wrestling.
I think you mean "hire." It's considered poor taste to buy and sell people these days.
Anyway, he's already making Let It Die, which is PS4 exclusive (though I wonder if it might just be timed).
Let It Die looks boring, though.

Many people prefer the Uncharted franchise over Mass Effect. Those people are obviously excited for a gameplay reveal of the game. It´s not rocket science.

I wouldn´t be so sure about Uncharted 4. ND is known to push boundaries, and this is their first game on brand new hardware. Sure, it will still be a third person shooter with platforming elements as much as Mass effect will still be a space opera RPG where you recruit a team, but there´s still plenty they can surprise fans with.

Point is, both games are from well known franchises with amazing developers behind them, of course people will be excited. If they only show Uncharted 4 gameplay I wouldn´t even be mad.

I'm just saying I'd be disappointed if I saw U4, even though I'm more excited for U4 than Mass Effect.

Basically, Mass Effect hasn't even been revealed yet. We don't really know what it is.

If we're speaking dev Sony should acquire it's tri-Ace
Look at this!!!
Sony is lacking in Japanese department, the games people remember from last gen were all western titles which they kept building last generation, most people won't remember what their Japanese studio made aside from maybe Demon's Souls and that's not even made by their own studio!

Square Enix is clearly not interested anymore to work with tri-Ace for making games like Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile or making new IP like Radiata Stories or Infinite Undiscovery. They would rather work with tri-Ace as an outsourcing company for their games like Lightning's Saga. tri-Ace is slowly deteorating into the many fates of Japanese studio, making mobile games. Their only big games in 4 year is Phantasy Star Nova, which wasn't even really RPG. They clearly have talent and can make AAA (In Japanese sense) JRPG. We need tri-Ace to work on AAA JRPG, come on Sony!

Good point. Talented studio which would be a relatively small investment with potential of a big return. They defnitely need the backing.

You guys think we'll get a reveal of a new FPS? Its almost a year later since current gen consoles launched and there still hasn't been a better looking first person shooter than Killzone: Shadow Fall. Since Insomniac was the other FPS studio last gen maybe Sony will want a new FPS IP.

God I hope not... so burned out of FPS games. I won't be when UT and Toxikk come out on PC though. I guess there has been a lack of them on PS4 but I still stand with my first statement.

I don't think Sony is going to focus on FPS genre that much. It is so much easier to just get the co marketing deal, like they are doing with BF,FC4 and Destiny. Then create their own new IP from scratch, that may or may not fail.

Im done with the FPS genre in general though last gen burned me out on it.

Hmm, I'm not holding my hopes up on that.

IMO, they're probably going to build up Cambridge by letting them carry the Killzone flag for the foreseeable future, and maybe transition into a potentially new IP from there.

That's still years off though.

If I were looking to make a new FPS, I'd contract Starbreeze or Digital Extremes to do it. Both are capable of really good things and I think could make an excellent shooter with a bit of guidance. I enjoyed Pariah for the most part, but felt it needed an extra six months in the oven, and although a lot of talent left Starbreeze to form Machine Games, I still think they're a very reliable studio.

But I do agree that Sony may not be banking on in-house FPSs so much this gen. Killzone is a solid brand but beyond that all of their efforts have failed. They're probably happy with co-marketing deals for the most part, and then Titanfall 2 is almost certainly going to be multiplatform when it launches in a couple of years.

Colony Wars is all I need, space sim genre is being revived as we speak, so now is the time!!
I've been telling Sony to do it for more than 6 years now, but they didn't listen...

This. I haven't blown up a Navy Frigate in AGES. I might hook up the PS2 just to do it one more time. I just gotta find my copy of the damn game first...

Me too, but I'd rather play the game on my Vita, I'm sure it'd still look pretty decent on dat screen, but nooo not even the PS1 classic is available on PSN.

What else are Guerrilla Cambridge or Guerrilla's second team (the KZ3/SF team) going to do, if not shooters? Add to Sony's already large action/adventure portfolio? They'll definitely continue to make shooters.

Also, I can't agree with you on Starbreeze and Digital Extremes. The Starbreeze of 10 years ago would've fit in perfectly, with their unique take on the genre. The Starbreeze of today is a different company and the only shooter we've seen from them is Syndicate, which wasn't great. And Digital Extremes are all over the place, so I'm even less convinced by them.

No. And also, far too big.

And who cares about Omnimusha? I mean honestly, it was a great fun game but it felt very much like the Resident Evil formula in a different skin, niche even at the height of it's popularity, and not got as big as DMC, which still isn't THAT big.

I would like to see a collaboration for DMC series though after NT butchered it. And OMG, wtf is Sony going to do about the MH series moving forward, let Nintendo own Japan with it? This and not getting Minecraft on Vita years ago has been two of the biggest blunders by the Playstation team in the past few years. Really stupid not to have that franchise on the system for Japan, and Minecraft could have literally increased vita's appeal in the west upwards of a good 3-5 million units if it was actually on/associated the platform closer to it's release.

SF team? They could always start pre-production of a follow-up to Horizon.

Cambridge though? Probably keep making shooters.

FF7 remake should be done that way. It should be a collective WWS effort with SE supervision. ND does the writing :3

Shit would be crazy.

I'm sad to say that now Naughty Dog and Media Molecule are the only Sony's studios i'm waiting for.

Look at the last games of the other studios... that frightens.

Drive Club, GOW Ascencion, Knack, Killzone Shadow Fall...

That's not what Sony had accustomed to us with their first party....

Really i'm a big fan of Sony but i'm a little afraid for the future, fortunately Media Molecule and Naughty Dog are some of the best studios in this industry.
I agree but two of those are launch titles, and Ascension wasn't made by the main GOW team if I'm not mistaken, that was when Stig started work on that now canceled project.

Drive Club, from what I hear from users core game is very good, it simply went though development hell. Months of updates and added features and it's a very very quality product.

PS3 might have had better early AAA games, (I really liked Resistance,Warhawk,Motorstorm) but PS4 has had a nice mix of smaller games and AAA titles, and Infamous/MLB are very good. Besides, I'd rather you start with ok, good games, and then keep getting better. Insomniac made a great FPS, and then seem to get worse after that. Same thing for the Warhawk team.

What comes next from GG, Santa Monica, Evolution, Japan, could very well easily top there previous products.

Colony Wars is all I need, space sim genre is being revived as we speak, so now is the time!!
I've been telling Sony to do it for more than 6 years now, but they didn't listen...

The time is ripe for this. Maybe if No Man's Sky is successful this could actually be a possibility. Doesn't Sony own the IP?

Me too, but I'd rather play the game on my Vita, I'm sure it'd still look pretty decent on dat screen, but nooo not even the PS1 classic is available on PSN.
If they dropped Colony Wars, Treasures of the Deep, and Bushido Blade on the Playstation Store all on the same day, I'd be a happy camper.

I think the most logcial studios for Sony would be Housemarque, and or Quantic Dream. Quantic Dream makes the most sense to me since Guillaume de Fondaumière (Co-CEO) is already willing to stay exclusive: http://www.computerandvideogames.co...erest-in-ending-sony-exclusivity-says-co-ceo/ And David Cage doesnt seem against it either.

I guess that willingness to stay exclusive even without a buyout could make Sony not see a point though.
That's what I was saying about solid, mutually beneficial relationships. Quantic are already doing exactly what Sony want them to do; making great games nobody else would ever make. Meanwhile, Sony are giving Quantic exactly what they want; the resources required to make great games nobody else would ever make. Everybody's happy, and everybody wins.

Then again, you have teams like Naughty Dog, who want to be part of the larger organization. Again, fostering solid relationships makes that doable too, where appropriate.

The same could be said about the next Mass Effect and tell me you wouldn´t freak out if they showed a trailer of that.

I think Drake's character model will look as good as the twitter pic, not sure about E3 teaser Drake - now that was detail.

Elena looks hots in U3. Albeit more petite - which I like.

Publishers like Sony value consistency, culture and ability to ship so I am sure they are still trying out Quantic Dream - obviously there is always the money issue and the willingness issue.

When you look at whom MS goes for third party (Platinum - ability to ship), and Sony (From Software - ability to ship), I think this is the most important factor for them when acquiring studios. Can they meet schedules, keep themselves on budget and deliver quality software. Check check check.

If i remember correct we had a yt video(some graphic dev or so) that explained that the e3 teaser was definately possible from a hardware perspective.
