I don't agree with people saying she shouldn't paint her face black because she can represent the character without it. Now, I think it is true she can represent her without painting her face black and I am not saying that there are no problems with this because of that, but I don't think she would want to.
There are different reasons for cosplaying and some may want to represent their character as accurately as they can. Now I think that is the case here. Like it or not, I'd say that the character being black is quite an identifying trait of her and it makes sense to replicate that in a costume. Personally I recognize the character easier this way.
It isn't about just "getting away" with the character for many people, you have cosplayers that take on the role entirely by also acting like the characters and not getting out of that role. It isn't necessary, but it can be fun for cosplayers to resemble their characters as much as they can.
