Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I have a msi GTX 980 TF, I have overclocked, check for stability by looping the demo for 3DMark on extreme for 2 hours. My test did not produce any problems. For some reason ME:SoM, seems to constantly make my GPU crash. When I go back down to the factory clock everything is fine. This is the only game that does this. Crysis 3 maxed out, good. pCARS maxed, good. Etc.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Unlike CPUs, there aren't go to programs that can truly test for 100% OC stability. You OC, test, think it's fine, and then, run into that one game that will cause issues. People have run into this problem with factory OC too.

Lol... so that is how it is.

Also just want to reiterate how cool and quite these new cards are. I have been running Folding@Home for 3 hours (on the highest workload) and the temps have remained <51c. Sound wise, I have all my case fans and liquid CPU cooling fans turned up and the GPU fan is inaudible (30% vs 100%). Even with the other fans low, it is barely noticeable. With any game going at a reasonable volume the noise is not bothersome.

I remember when a friend built his first PC in high school and the thing sounded like a jet plane taking off. Times have changed.

I don't touch Furmark anymore for 2 reasons that are directly related. It's notorious for pushing cards past their breaking point. The other reason is caused by Nvidia and AMD's reaction to the damage it can do. They apparently recognize the executable and automatically throttle their cards to prevent failure so it's also an unreliable test for overclocks.
Yep. Furmark causes my 970 to just not boost to it's full potential. Even though I've tried loads of other things over the space of a month and I've had no issues with the overclock.

It just seems useless for it. I think just playing new/demanding games is the best way to see if a overclock is stable.

Anyone having problems with DSR? I enabled all the DSR resolutions in the Nvidia Control Panel and in some games the 1920x1080 isn't available. I have to disable DSR to get that resolution back.

Some games do seem to have issues. Shadow of Mordor for example, you have to turn it off else you can't use your native res.

Anyone using a 2560x1440 monitor and having issues with DSR? I feel like Nvidia only really tested it for people who have 1080P.

Whenever I try to use DSR, it severely limits my refresh rate. At 4K, it goes to 60hz, and at 5K down to 25hz. It's fucking useless because I clearly have the GPU power to do it in a lot of games, but can't due to that issue. Not only that, but the games get super choppy as well, leading me to believe there might be a conflict with GSYNC.

For example, If I'm using GSYNC at my native res, then 45fps feels perfectly smooth, but somehow DSR 45fps feels like a slideshow.

Something seems wrong there, yeah. I can use 4K with 144Hz without any problems on my 1080p monitor with DSR.

Huh, Mordor works just fine for me. Obviously it targets 4K as 100% but I just set it to 1080p (25%?) in the graphics setting and except for the occasional crash which is probably caused by the factory OC, everything is fine.

Read my post again. I know it works fine on 1080p monitors.

I was looking for input from people with 2560x1440 monitors, specifically the ROG Swift, as it's the only monitor on the market that supports higher than 1080@144hz.

Hey guys, I want to make one small request if possible as it is driving me crazy and I badly want to play the following game.

Which Game? Splinter Cell Blacklist

My Specs:

i7 5820K@4.3GHZ
16GB DDR4@ 2133MHZ
G1 GTX 970 SLI
Windows 8.1
Uplay(standalone,not steam version)

Anyone getting constant crashing with all graphic settings to its maximum(DX11)?

DX9 works a bit longer but still crashes eventually, I get about 20-25 minutes of play or more, then I get a crash with DX11 or DX9.

My request is if anyone has a smilar system, as in Grpahic Cards+OS and has the game, does it crash for you?

Also the game has a weird issue where my FPS is rock solid 60, then changing a setting in oiptions to a lower value it fluctuates.

Then I re-boot, by resetting all settings and enabling everything max, with Downsampling of 2560x1440 to 1920x1080 and bam rock solid 60.

Mind you, the game crashed on my previous system too:(except less frequent)

i7 2600K@4.5ghz
gtx 670 4gb sli
8gb ddr3@1600mhz
Windows 7-Ultimate

I cant resolve it for the life of me and it is a great shame as the game is amazing, all other games work great, some games which are more intensive like BF4 run twice the framerate with better graphics and 64 Player maps at 140+FPS.

If anyone has any sugesstions, please let me know as it would be highly appreciated, thanks.

I got the oc version of the Galax yesterday and so far it's a solid piece of kit. No coil whine from either cards. No problems with the build quality, it's a sturdy card, has a nice backplate too. My case is a bit cramped and under full 3D mark load top card reaches 70 and bottom low 60s.

Sounds promising. I wish somewhere other than OCUK stocked it as their postage to Nothern Ireland is fairly pricey. Might hold off to see if they go on offer to make it more palatable.

DX11 games are much more sensitive to overclocks. That might be it. You can try resetting your 970s to stock clocks and see if that resolves it.

Also, how are you using DSR? I thought it didn't support SLI yet? The option completely disappeared for me when I added a second 980 to my system.

Check your event logger. Can you tell us a bit more about your crashes ?

Hopefully that can give you some clue, however I doubt it as it is driving me crazy,I see so many threads on the net having the same issue, Windows Style to 2, doesn't fix it.

Ahh this is stock GTX 970 from Gigabyte and Stock GTX 670 from Gigabyte, unless you mean Gigabytes out of box overclock?(However other DX11 games run perfectly)

Also I'm not sure man, DSR is working for me, however I disabled DSR anyway and currently just using normal manual downsampling.

DSR absolutely is supported in SLI now. Do you have the newest drivers?

You could try disabling one of your GPU. SLI is not issues free unfortunately.
Gigabyte and MSI both OC their cards from the get go but I don't think this is what's causing the crashes.
I assume you are running the latest driver.

Yes, latest driver and I will try with a single card however I thought Splinter Cell Blacklist was SLI enabled game.

Anyway thanks so much for helping man I really appreciate it, it is very frusrating having a great game be ruined because of some incomaptibility, esppecialy one I don't even know.

Some are saying on the net to delete older versions of Microsoft Visual C++, like 2005 etc but keep the latest one, I don't want to do that as some other games rely on them.

Try that and report back, unfortunately even games supporting SLI are not immune to crashes.

Meh, tried both of my card individually last night. One was worse than the other, but both gave me the same graphical artifacts while playing Mordor (which continued on the desktop for a few seconds after exiting the game.) Figures I would wind up with two bad cards. The past few weeks, man, everything I touch turns to shit.

?

Well, when I had DSR on, it wouldn't let me use native res, because the highest DSR res didn't scale down to 1440p with the options you can select in the menu (25%, 50% and 75% I think?). I think I had it set to 2.5x or something on DDR setting. It was fine for you because 1080p is 25% of 4k.

How do you mean 'basic'? As in a reference cooler?

I believe so yes. The card comes with a very slight overclock out of the box and is very quiet - no whine! I just went for the cheapest option I can find, as I'm using it as a stop-gap to when the 8GB cards eventually appear.

When it arrived I thought the package was empty it was so light! The 670 is a beast in comparison.

Sill no official SLI profile for Shadow of Mordor, though at least it's been mentioned by the dev and Nvidia. Nice to see Lords of the Fallen has one ready before launch.

I've got SLI'd 980s in my new build from Overclockers, just waiting on them to build and send out so should be this time next week at latest. Just in time for Sid Meir Civ in space :)

Nice. Signed up for the free 30 day trial for Newegg Premiere. That should be enough time to get my 970 sorted. Premiere lets you have free return shipping, no restocking fees and expedited shipping to you. I don't have to pay the $15 shipping to get my card back to them for the RMA now. Sending it out today if I can.

I wonder if this driver will fix my weird performance problem that occurs when I enable desktop recording for shadowplay when I have 2 monitors enabled.

I posted about it on the Nvidia forums, but got no reply. Is this anything you have heard about before Andy? https://forums.geforce.com/default/...hadowplay-desktop-recording/?offset=2#4335236

Edit: Problem still there with new drivers. Oh well, sucks that I can't record anything in games that I run in borderless windowed mode though.

I'm still seeing a 10c jump in idle temps with ShadowPlay enabled.

The clocks are not dropping when in 2D mode on the desktop and it's causing the card to stay hotter.

Not sure if a bug or by design, I don't know if ShadowPlay requires higher clocks even when on the desktop.

I do have 3 monitors, if that counts for anything.

This is what GPU usage of SLI 980s with the new drivers in Ryse looks like for me:

Could anyone else with SLI 980s see how Ryse performs for them?
