Hey I just made a thread asking this, but it was overlooked rather quickly.

I'm about to switch from an AT&T iPhone to a Verizon Android, and I'm not sure which one to go with.

Moto X second gen looks like a clean more stream-lined experience, but will it last me 2 years?

If possible, should I wait to see the Verizon Nexus 6 contract options?

Would a Nexus 5 feel super dated before my contract is up?

What about the Galaxy S5?

No Verizon compatible Nexus 5 so thats out.

My ranking for you would be:

Nexus 6 - if you can handle the size.
MotoX - less features than a Galaxy S5, but they are more practical and useful features. Phone looks and feels better too. Faster in my experience than the S5 due to more pure Android.
S5 - better camera than MotoX. Better battery life.

Do you know the Nexus 6 contract price through Verizon?

Dan pls, you didn't make a mistake. Embrace your Xperia family membership.

:lool. I guess I just like new things. Plus, that stock Android looks insane.

Yeah it'll be well over £500.

You can expect it to be £519 off contract, unless they suddenly decide to not direct convert euro price and also suddenly stop doing €1=$1 conversion.

Interested to see O2's tariffs mainly. If like the Z3 you can get it with no upfront cost and 20GB of 4G for £48 I can see it doing quite well. That's what I got my Z3 with, but I get £8 off a month through a corporate discount thingy with O2.

Almost £50 a month, Jesus. Surely going with Three with all you can eat 4G data for £37 a month would've been better, or unlimited everything at £40?

I'm glad I'm SIM free and on a monthly deal :lol

The nexus 5 isn't available for Verizon so that's out of the picture and while the moto x is a decent phone, it's lacking in areas making it a poor choice compared to the competition especially when considering performance over 2 years. I'm not a fan of Samsung, touchwiz, the gs5 in general but it isn't a bad phone, just not one I would personally recommend.

I think your best options are either the nexus 6 or the droid turbo. They'll both last a long time with the only major difference being their screen size. The turbo should also get better battery life with the smaller screen and larger battery. The nexus 6 runs stock android while the turbo should run near stock with a few of Motorola's software tweaks. Unfortunately the turbo is lacking the dual front facing speakers found on the nexus 6 which I really like.

Ultimately they're both great devices that will last a long time and you should be happy with either one.

My first post :D

Well I'm incredibly happy that early reports are that the camera is a huge improvement this time around. I just don't fee like spending $700 (that 32GB upgrade is too tempting to ignore) on a new phone when I bought the N5 last year on the Play store... I need to convince myself to stick with the N5 for another year and get a Nexus 2015 next year :( I'm determined to stick with the T-Mobile $30 plan and not get a contract.

Does the N6 have always on voice recognition like the Moto X? That feature is pushing me more towards the Moto X. (And the price, of course. I don't want to spend $700+ on a phone again).

Is in the arstechnica preview:

The Nexus 6 also has always-on voice recognition, which again is a feature Motorola pioneered on the Moto X, but executed better since it is now part of the OS. Like the Moto X, Google and Motorola included special low-power hardware in the Nexus 6 to detect the "Ok Google" hotword even when the screen is off. Lollipop now has support for this baked in, and OEMs can choose to use the main SoC or a special low-power chip to make it work. The process is a lot faster and more responsive than the Moto X's version, which needed to use a separate "Moto Voice" app to detect the hotword, turn the phone on, and fire up Google Search.

After reading through the previews I'm convinced I want this phone badly, despite the price. Now let's see how much it will cost in Europe and when it will be available.

So right now it's either the Nexus 5 or the Nexus 6 for me, upgrading from a Galaxy S3 from 2 years ago.

I want to go with a Nexus because I absolutely hated TouchWiz and all the bloatware on my Samsung.

The only thing keeping me from going with a Nexus 5 instead of a 6 are the camera (which isn't worth paying 300€ more to me) and the battery. I can perfectly live with a battery that'll last me a whole day (which my Galaxy S3 only rarely does), so
I wonder how much the Android 5.0 battery saver mode is going to benefit the Nexus 5's battery or if it's actually worth to pay the premium price for the Nexus 6 (which I overall like more, except for its size I think).

So, what's your take on the 2014 Moto X? It should be a no-brainer, but unfortunately it's 100€ more than the 32GB Nexus 5, doesn't have the stereo speakers of the Nexus 6, and I read that the camera isn't much better than that of the Nexus 5. Also how is the battery in the Moto X?

Does anybody have a comparison between stock Android and what the 2014 Moto X is running? I guess I'll have to wait for 5.0 to hit before those pop up.

(Don't care about internal specs such as CPU and GPU because everyday performance seems to be perfectly fine with all three phones I'm talking about.)

This review, by MKBHD is a good overview. For what it's worth, the version of Android running on the Moto X is supposedly very similar to stock android.

Really excited to spring for this and dump VZW for T-Mobile month to month. N5 came and went, almost sprung for a OnePlus but too many hoops to jump through. N6 it is.

Even without the battery saver feature, lollipop has dramatically improved by n5's battery life.

I did this recently and am loving it so far. I'd recommend checking out Google Voice and porting your number over there instead of to T-Mobile.

Then you can use hangouts to make phone calls and never worry about going over your minutes on the $30 plan.

Oh great, I was about to completely dismiss this phone and go for the note 4 but now I'm pulled back in. Guess I'll wait for reviews. What were those mediocre camera shots we had from that guy's google plus page though? Fake?
I have no idea, but I tend not to give much credit to those now.

I don't know what the battery saver will do, but Project Volta certainly will have a major impact.

The Moto X is an all around amazing smartphone. Its only weaker points, camera and battery, have a good chance to be improved quite a bit when Lollipop lands, which I would expect within no more than a couple of weeks after the Nov. 3rd release, for the X runs a 99% stock version of Android (there where Moto's features were baked into the OS last year, they have been moved onto separate apps this time around) and Motorola's commitment to update it 'instantly'.

Same. Hoping it comes arrives around the £400 mark.

I'm still impressed that it is almost the same size of a iPhone 6+ but rocks a considerably bigger screen. It also looks great. It will be a huge improvement over my 4.5 inches Moto G.

I wasn't even actually talking about a battery saver mode specifically, but more about Lollipop's "battery saving feature(s)", guess I didn't make myself all that clear.

So it sounds like the battery life on the N5 seems is going to be somehwhat reasonable again with 5.0. And we don't even know what the N6's is going to be like. This definitely brought my decision more towards the N5.

So basically, the Moto X 2014 and the Nexus 5 have similar weaknesses (probably getting improved with 5.0's release), with the Moto X having a 100€ higher pricepoint. Everyday performance shouldn't be all too different from the N5 I guess, so basically it's 100€ more for a 13MP camera vs. an 8MP one? Or is the battery still a lot better than the Nexus 5's?

Man this is getting complicated, if only there was a 5 inch Nexus 6; I'd even pay the premium price for it.

Project Volta was also used on the very first Developer Preview, so I would go as far as saying that it'll be even better with the complete Lollipop package. I used it briefly, and the gain my N5 had was really, really huge.
Like, one full day without worries huge.

If you look it from a "tool" perspective then, yeah, that's about it. You get that 0.2" increase while keeping the size basically the same and the S801 is also fairly quicker to charge than the 800, so keep that in mind (at least, my OnePlus One is definitely faster than my N5 used to be, and it has a massively bigger battery too).
But I consider the Moto X a kind of jewel myself, whereas the Nexus 5 is nice but doesn't come close.
And, well, Motorola's software features, that happen to be actually useful.

Once Lollipop arrives, you be the judge. You probably won't go wrong with either. :)

If I were you I would just get the 6. I think it is worth the premium for no compromises in a device that you will use as much and is as important as a smartphone.

Last week I'd pretty much made up my mind that I was going for the Note 4. Now I'm leaning towards the Nexus 6.

I hate touchwiz just that much.

I was thinking this too, but I like that the note 4 has a removable battery and an SD card slot. The Nexus 6's front speakers are nice though. The Nexus 9 looks really good, think I might get that for my first tablet.

With "jewel" do you mean the design? Because I like the N5's better.
So I guess there isn't really an answer to this, but the 100€ less for the N5 would probably be the deciding factor between the two for me.
But thanks for all the info and your opinion on the matter! :)

If it were the perfect phone for me I wouldn't have a problem with the price point, but I fear the size would be too big of a compromise for me. Sure, for at home use bigger is better imo, but at home I'm mostly at my desktop anyways.
Also, thinking about it, I probably shouldn't spend that much on a phone when I'm really not a "power user". I pretty much only watch some vids, browse and text with it, with occasionally taking a picture, so paying 650€ (if the rumors are true) wouldn't make a lot of sense.
What really interests me in the Nexus line is just the stock Android and the immediate updates. If 5.0 is going to improve the battery life as substantially as stated in this thread and several articles, I think it would be illogical to go with the Nexus 6 even if it had a smaller form factor.

Yes, I am a total sucker for the Moto X.
But hey, then the N5 will be more than an awesome phone for you. I would suggest that you take a look at these dbrand skins; I bought one for my N5 and couldn't be happier. Fast delivery, awesome price/service, and stunning quality. Highly recommended!

PS_ They also have these best-in-class glass screen protector. Sexy and durable.
I obviously bought one for my OPO.

Thanks! Down the rabbit hole I go.

Have you tried printing it out? That really helped me figure out if it would be too big or not.

If your on Verizon I would recommend checking out the droid turbo as it's the closest thing to a 5in nexus 6 you'll find. It's also rumored to be coming to AT&T and T-Mobile under a different name because the "droid" line is owned? by Verizon.

Sadly, the Turbo is going to cost as much, if not more, than the Nexus 6 too.

It appears there will be no stock available in the UK until after December.
FTS, I was due to sell my iphone6 to a buyer but because of this I would be without a phone got to long.
I think I'll just keep it now that I'm buying an iPad air 2 for the iCloud and continuity functions.
I'll look at the nexus 7 next year.

The Moto X does feel nice in the hand. If it weren't for the camera and battery life, I would probably have gotten it. I tried it out at a Verizon store and it's pretty nice. As it stands, the Nexus 6 will be my next phone unless Moto makes an unlocked version of the Droid Turbo aka what the Moto X should've been.

I think the consensus is:
Best phone overall: N6
Too big?: Nexus 5 or Moto X. Take your pick.

What overheating problem?

It sucks that, if you want cutting-edge tech, there are no options for smaller sizes. It's go big or go mid-end specs.

Sorry, I should have specified-- from earlier generations of Nexus.

I picked up a Nexus (4? I don't remember), and it overheated and shut down in the first few months. Ordered a replacement... still overheats when I'm running only ONE app. Drains the batteries, too.

Looked it up and saw that it was a model thing.. not sure if they fixed it yet.

I've had every Nexus phone, and I never had this problem. It seems you were just unlucky.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I like my phones vanilla. I think slapping some skins or screen protectors ruin the premium feel most gadgets (try to) achieve. I might just have the wrong idea because I've never used a good skin/protector/case/whatever, but since I am very careful with my devices (without it being a hassle for me) I won't need something like that anyways.

I'm in Germany so those carriers (except for T-Mobile) aren't available here. Nevertheless, I never buy phones on a contract anyways, since it always ends up being more expensive in the end than paying retail for a phone and then getting a cheap contract (currently paying 10€ a month for 500MB high speed internet which I never fully use and after that it's a slow flatrate).
It's a bigger investment upfront for sure, but if you can afford that it will always be cheaper in the end and you're also not bound to a contract or even a phone for two years.

I've been using my Nexus 4 for pretty much 2 years now and I've never had an overheating problem. Or any problem, it's the most stable and smooth phone I've ever owned.

It appears there will be no stock available in the UK until after December.
Man I hope that's not true. I can upgrade to any phone I want right now, and I'm waiting for Nexus 6 impressions before deciding.
