Nintendo Downloads - October 2014

I really need someone to sell me on Squids Odyssey. It looks cool and $6 seems a good price, but I'm the type who's leery of buying games which I'm not 100% confident in.

Nintendo Life and NWR gave it good reviews, but there are a few negative reviews as well, including a couple really bad ones, which are keeping me on the fence...

Thanks! I'd like to try it, since I've never really played a "2D Silent Hill" before. I'm both put off a little and intrigued when you say that the game doesn't explain itself much. I'll probably buy it, but maybe not at full price.

Awesome is kind of an exaggeration, I would say okay is more accurate.
The game has two big issues
-Limited visibility; the action is way too zoomed in and the art style sometimes makes it hard to see what's going.
-Poor controls; way too slippery and jumping from a ledge feels inaccurate. You get used to it after a while but it still doesn't feel that good. Protip; always roll/cartwheel off a ledge when trying to make a long jump as it's way more reliable than a running jump. Surprisingly, the swimming feels great.

Also the bosses are too easy and not creative, and I was a little bit annoyed that there was no ending. The best thing about the game is probably the music, which is really impressive music for a GB game. Took me a little bit less than 8 hours to 100% it, but that's only because I had a lot of trouble finding the bonus stages in 2 of the levels. If you only want to make it to the end, it will take you way less. Case in point:

It's got fairly significant replayability too, to get all the trophies/endings in the PS version I replayed about 4 times. IMO plenty of playtime and quality presentation for $12 but certainly not a minecraft-esque "play it for ages" sort of game either.

PAL forced to run at 60Hz so that every 5th frame repeats, which causes stutter and ''dead frames'', i.e., your input won't be registered on the repeated frame.

So this is worse than the Wii version, which was the original PAL optimized release running at 50Hz and pretty much the same as the NTSC version.

I really like it despite the clunky controls. The puzzles are mostly well designed from what I've played and the writing is solid.

Having just beaten the game a couple of hours ago thanks to the maxcriden giveaway, I have to agree with this post. It's a very nice game and it makes good use of the gamepad, offering many options like Off-TV play, map on gamepad, etc. It controls a lot better than I expected too, it feels good to just move around. Besides, who doesn't enjoy making holes?

Hell yeah, Pokemon de Panepon! I know most people are waiting for the Trading Card Game and that's fine by me, but Pokemon Puzzle Challenge is one of the best puzzle games available out there.
 
Ballpoint Universe Infinite,

I can't recommend this game right now, there are some issues with freezing in the game, and no audio through the game pad.

The shooter game play is solid, but disappointed with the technical issues.

Re-submitting demo tonight of the game. Few small issues to fix (I actually knew it would fail since last week while talking with lotcheck people, just needed to wait till got full status on report).

Demo and upcoming patch #2 will introduce Nintendo Stability™. But seriously, will make the game stable 30 FPS. Adding 2 maps (BLOK DROP U & PING 1.5+ maps) and online leaderboards.
 
First I need to thank rjc571 for recommending Legend of Dark Witch, it deserves its own OT, Its TONS of fun. Levels contain multiple paths and collectables, weapons are obtained by defeating bosses. Everything is drawn with amazing 2D sprites, something that is rarely seen these days.

Buying such a great game at such a low price literally feels like stealing, I kinda feel guilty for paying such a low price. The only thing I can complain about is that the menus are a bit too amateurish and certainly have an "indie" feel to them.

Don't overlook this gem, its just 4$ and its much more mighty than Gun Volt, this game needs our support.

Nothing special, I just have been in touch with a few companies. I'm not formally affiliated in any way, I just like to get the hype train rolling for indies and get GAFers an opportunity to give away games. I'm not paid or anything. :)

It's pretty great. Imagine a top-down SRPG with a control scheme like Angry Birds. Everything about the game oozes quality. The music is nice, the hand-drawn backgrounds can be gorgeous and the story isn't too bad either.

The negative reviews seem to knock the game because it's an iOS port with added stuff. At $15, they may have had a point but a $6 price-tag renders those comments moot, the game has tons of content, I've sunk ~10 hours in to it and still haven't completed the main campaign. It's a great deal especially if you're in Europe and can get the 3DS and Wii U version on crossbuy.

I downloaded Squids Oddessy (Wii U) due to the major sale ($14.99 to $5.99) and I'm finding it really charming. It's basically an RPG with action elements. You can power up your squid with new equipment or by choosing to level them up. You basically flick the squids around the environment and into enemies to attack.

Graphics are colorful and clean, the music is surprisingly great, and there's nice production standards all around. No framerate hiccups and they even get off-tv play right, with optional touch screen functionality. My only cautionary note is I had a hard freeze once in the hour I've played. I'm not sure if that is just a one time glitch or if it will be a major problem, as the game length appears to be quite substantial.

Oh, and the game is actually fun! I don't see a lot of activity on Miiverse despite the sale, but this does seem like one of the better indies out there (and I've played a lot of them).

Just so people know, Squids Odyssey is actually a compilation of 2 or 3 individual Squids iOS games, it's not a port per se.

Possibly much ado about nothing, as it's a reply to a fan request instead of a standalone statement. I'd much prefer the originals (NES/SNES) -- especially since I grew up with the SNES version of FF3 and that's what got me into the series. I heard the GBA has more content but worse graphics/sound. More importantly, I think I have it in Wii mode (meaning the SNES upgrade would be $1.50! instead of the GBA's $7-$8 bucks!). But for some reason SquareEnix SNES games don't support Miiverse screenshots, which is just weird. Maybe their GBA ports would?

Though I guess part of me wouldn't mind seeing Final Fantasy 1 & 2 Advance, as that was two games in one package with improved 16-bit graphics. I suppose consistency would be nice. It's starting to annoy me that we're seeing nothing here Stateside from them, when really a lot of people would probably buy everything.

yep, they are always trying to do things. They would love to bring DQX to the west. They are considering a DQ7r localization but, you know, reasons... They would like to see DQ11 on a big screen.
So many wishful thinking from Square Enix these days.
They probably won't bring FFVI in the west VC. They already are saying that you can download it through Wii VC. Too bad. I would get it again.

I'm so tempted to switch to digital on the 3DS but gah... :( can't share the games with my bro.

hmm. any thoughts on Pokemon Art Academy

the only good thing about buying games on 3DS - especially first party releases, is that you don't have to worry about jumping in early since sales hardly come by

it's a "do anything" game. I'm 11 hours in and have done two story quests and not even taken on all of the lives yet - or done more than their tutorial quests (which you can skip, btw, just saying to avoid "omg 10h tutorial???" confusion). it's amazing.
 
Guys can anyone help me with the following..? For my 3DS I still haven't linked my profile to a NNID. If I do it will I get stars points for club Nintendo for digital games that I already have or will this apply only for future purchases?
