So why doesn't Sony advertise their resolution advantage?

Because resolution advantage and resistance to forced parity doesn't need marketing. It's a matter of consumer rights and it will eventually reach the people. Did Rosa Parks need marketing when she fought for the rights of the people? No, just like the PS4 won't need marketing for fighting opressing resolution parity.

The best approach Sony could conceivably take in that regard is advertise their console as the most powerful console on the market or ever and that would still be fairly nebulous advertising because it being specific wouldn't help.
Even then though, depending how people view the Alienware Alpha and other yet to be released steam machines that might not be true if those are considered consoles too

Errr no they don't, especially not native 1080p

But when you get a game at 900p or 720p, it is seen as sub 1080 OR 720, it definitely wont look as good as full 1080P HD

Because that's not true if you're talking about games in general. The PS3, WiiU, XB1 all have native 1080p games.
If you're referring to specific multi plat games that run at a lower res on the XB1, then it would be up to the publisher to put those points on the game. They won't do this, as it harms the image of the other version. The exact same reason they didn't have similar advertising mullet points last gen when the 360 versions were better.

It makes sense for TVs but for video games youd be surprised how unaware your average consumer is. Working electronics retail for a few years people think that whatever resolution your tv is = game resolution. They dont know about upscaling or downscaling etc. So its all the same to them.
Not my point, why use resolution to sell the game to someone if that means nothing to them?
"This game is 1080p on PS4!!!!"
What if the buyer doesn't understand resolutions? What if they're just looking for a multiplayer game to play with their friends? What if they just want a fun game?
The same reason you didn't see Sony's CELL architecture at the forefront of the PS3's marketing. The reality is way less people care about those things than these forums would lead you to believe.
The only people who be swayed by the fact that the PS4 plays in 1080P more often, already know that. What would be the point? The marginal benefit outweighs the cost imo. A huge majority of consumers cannot tell the difference between 900P and 1080P, I guarantee it. Plus the "1080P", "HD", "Full HD" tags are thrown around so much these days by so many different products I think they've lost their meaning.
Now price on the other hand, that is the reason why Sony has come out on top so fast. That and the fact that once John Doe's friends have PS4s, he wants one too. Even if he had a 360 last gen. It's a snowball effect that I'm not sure can be reversed in the near future. Sony has momentum

A lot of consumers outside of the enthusiast circle simply don't know. I still catch people with HDTVs watching the SD versions of channels sometimes.

the biggest difference is that its obvious since everybody would be using the exact same product since there is only one model for an iPhone. All people don't own the same model tv

It's pretty much common knowledge that the PS4 is more powerful than the X1. Heck even the majority of my friends who don't follow the games media knows.
Sony don't even need to be specific with the advantages. As long as the mainstream knows that the PS4 versions of multiplatform games are better then that will be the version that they will choose regardless.
It's like last gen with the PS3 and 360. I'm sure besides the hardcore who visit neogaf or df, people who own both consoles will just pick the 360 version without even checking if the 360 version is actually better.

Well for one that isn't entirely true. There a few games on the xbox one that do 1080p and there will easily be more in the future. Obviously the PS4 doesn't have as much trouble hitting that mark though.

Instead of saying no one outside the forums cares, Id say the people who care already know. Its in the articles they read, the podcasts, the reviews, youtube clips and the questions they asked before buying, it might even be common vernacular among friends.
Sony tooted the 1080p 60fps sound bite last gen , it came back to bite them in the ass. Maybe they are playing it slightly more reasonable/humble this time around. Though they made sure they said "most powerful console" a lot in its initial release.

There are many 1080p games on the Xbox at least, if not the Wii.

It's not a selling point. And the only people who care, already know. So why not just focus on the core message points of the game itself?
They are still using the "most powerful console" and "best place to play" taglines in all of their advertisements. They are spending A LOT of money on advertising this time around. This is 2nd go around with Taco Bell, 3rd if you count the Vita thing and I'm seeing a ton of those ads during the World Series. When I watch a UK stream of something, I've also seen that they are spending a lot of money there.

I think Sony should play dirty and create a 'Definitive Version' stamp on their games to tell everyone its the best console version. Like how Nintendo used to have a seal of quality.

Everyone who cares already knows. Most of the public they might be addressing otherwise are busy playing games on their smartphones and tablets they already like at much less impressive levels of visual capability. Besides, while multiplats might retain a resolution difference, I'm doubting it will hold over time with first party titles that seek to prioritize visual sophistication that will come at the cost of resolution by middle to end of gen where these consoles will struggle to keep up with new techniques that run better on newer hardware.

I think that number isn't just attributed to people wanting a machine that plays 1080p games. I have a feeling some of the PlayStation 4's sales are purely out of word of mouth, or the very least friends wanting what other friends have.

To be fair, for the marketing to be successful it doesn't need to educate the masses what the differences are, simply that they exist and favor the PS4 which is much easier albeit still not straightforward

This statement makes no sense. It implies that the reason every single PS4 owner bought one is because of the power gap, which is obviously not true. I'd like to know how you came to this conclusion.
Those who care are already in the know and I don't see the benefit of a publisher fitting that into 30-60 sec TV spots. The console with the exclusive marketing is only advertised at the very end.
It makes more sense for a pub to advertise the game itself rather than widely known resolution advantages between different platforms of the same game in an ad. It's more catchy to say "The Ultimate Destiny Experience is only on Playstation" than " Destiny only in 1080P on Playstation 4." The former has more of an effect on the general public than the latter.
I think power difference is definitely one of the reasons why PS4 is selling much better and resolution absolutely figures in this power difference. Eitherways no one will really know until a scientific poll is conducted asking consumers the reason why they are purchasing a ps4 over an xbox one. I pretty much predict a lot of responses will be " Because I heard its more powerful and games are in full HD" etc etc...
Id say most of the sales are due to it being $100 cheaper and playing the same games as your competitor

I know a person that didnt know that there was a difference in MP3 bitrates but now downloads lossless because 'omg its lossless.' People dont need to know, you just have to tell them its better.
