So why doesn't Sony advertise their resolution advantage?

I know a person that didnt know that there was a difference in MP3 bitrates but now downloads lossless because 'omg its lossless.' People dont need to know, you just have to tell them its better.

Yep. Sony saying they're the most powerful is sufficient.

I'm sure slapping a sticker / tagline like that will surely increase sales by 100%!

Not.

The people who honestly care about this would have already done their homework.

this.

and even worse, outside of forums, no one give a shit about 60 fps :(
back then between 720p and 1080p yes....
but now you cant see the difference between 900p and 1080p...
Damn, all these developers wasting them pixels!

Keep that shit off the front of the box though.

Sony already advertises 1080p on every game (1080p native or not)

This is true and I do not think they have any desire to start differentiating between native resolution and output resolution now. I'd say the people that truly care about the specific details already know. And for those less concerned about technical details, the general understanding that the PS4 is the more capable system is already well spread.

They should just show the difference in store demo setups.

I mean when I dick around with settings in PC games the jump in clarity is super obvious on my tv and showing that off at a demo station distance of like 3 feet will be even more obvious.

You can def see a difference between 900p and 1080p but honestly it's not a big deal as long as it's not bullshit forced parity (achem). I still use last gen consoles and yeah 720p doesn't look great but the games are still amazing. Sony is better for not bragging but it bothers me when companies like IGN try sweeping it under the rug. It is a difference and a big one IF you care about it. Don't pretend it doesn't exist though.

"In Full 1080p HD, only on PlayStation"*

No. If they want to do this, they need to coin some bullshit, somewhat-related phrase that rolls off the tongue better. Like Sega did with Blast Processing.

Even people who care about resolution roll their eyes at the "glorious 1080p" thing whenever they try to throw it around.

The general public likely doesn't care or even fully grasp the difference. Plus they know it isn't a difference that is likely to last forever.

So many people are ignorant to tech specs. people where I work think the ps3 and 360 are 1080p because the game box says it is.

They should be required to put native resolution on the back and the "upscales to". I'd love to know what I'm actually buying.

There's no need for them to. And why would they? Nobody outside of gaming forums gives a shit.

They're just letting the games speak for themselves.

I think for something like "Looks best on Playstation" they'd have to strike a marketing deal with the publishers. EA has no interest in advertising the PS4 version over the xb1 unless they see some money for it.

And if I recall correctly did they already do something like that with Watch_Dogs and Destiny, they just can't grab a marketing deal for every big multiplat game out there

Xbox fan: "Cause no one cares stupid!"

PS4 fan: "Cause we've already won stupid!"

PC fan: "1080p was a selling point in 2002 stupid!"

People seem to think 1080p and 60fps means next gen.....reality is its simply more pixels moving fast

If the game plays the same it makes no fucking difference Imo

To me next gen means more multiplayer players in a game. ....larger more interactive world's and smarter Ai

Forza 5 would probably be a game I'd pin as a good representation of what a next gen game is....more specifically the way it handles the drivatars and downloads how real people play

This is a game that feels like you are racing real people.

Having a 64 player game of battlefield 4 on a large open map is also another great thing next gen has bought us

This is the sort of stuff people should be commending on ...not this 1080p/60fps or bust shit

This goes well with the post above you.

Who cares, its marketing. They can frame it anyway they want. Just call it Native 1080p on a premium shiny sticker. Your average Walmart customer will notice that.

They could put this on the Xbox too, ya know... 1080p isn't exclusive to games.

But, as always, first post nails it. General consumer doesn't care and or understand the difference, as much as anyone might argue it, it's just the way things are.

Advertise it on a game by game basis? I don't particularly care about resolution but your question has a really obvious answer.

Whose going to advertise on a game by game basis? Third parties? Why would you advertise one of your products as being inherently inferior when they're both at the same price point? Why would a publisher let the platform holder do that? Your obvious answer has obvious flaws.

Because the vast majority of normal people cant see the difference between 900p and 1080p.

Hell, SIGGRAPH doesn't even care. Why would J6P?

Microsoft already gave Sony the ball. All Sony has to do for the next 6 or 7 years is not drop it.

Then MS will just counter saying they have the features and the well reviewed games.

Really, advertising resolution advantage is a waste of money.

Sony marketing should if someone figures out how to do it properly. I don't think they have done enough on their end to make it known among the casuals. The "it don't matter talk" is B.S and we all know it. The hardcore has done Sony's work for them in forums and social media. Certainly talking about specs on the console's reveal is not enough. Some people need to look at the Nintendo/Sega days as well as the PS1/N64 days when it comes to advertisement. For perspective, just look at how MS has been hard at work trying to downplay the differences in hardware power...."it's a perception challenge"...."x resolution not acceptable on the Xbox One"....we could go on and on....+ what we don't know that goes behind closed doors and gets inked with NDA's.

Jesus Christ! Why the hell do some people keep repeating that? And it's not "some people" don't see the difference, oh no, it's "the majority of people". I really need to see some receipts here.

I mean seriously, if the majority don't see the difference, why the hell do game developers, media creators and even TV makers make 1080p products? And oh, all these creating 4K products must be fooling themselves.

Why doesn't Microsoft advertise that Xbox Live works?

They sorta do, they always say Xbox live is the best place to play online.

99.9% of console owners don't give a shit about the difference between 900 and 1080p.

99.9% don't even realize that there is a difference at all. It's just something that the tech savvy gamers only really pick up on that trickles down to the not so tech savvy gamers by word of mouth.

It it just like how the majority of PS3 and 360 owners didn't realize that their consoles weren't actually displaying at 1080p either or didn't seem to care for that matter.
