The best action movies of the 2000s to date?

I'm hyped for John Wick, and it's got me thinking about what some of the best action movies are that have been released since 2000. There's The Raid and it's sequel, Edge of Tomorrow, and the Bond flicks. What else we got?

I think they're more heavily fantasy and dramatic than pure action movies, but maybe if they are part of your definition of an action movie.

aiight. lets please discount fantasy and comic book movies then. it gets boring since that's all ppl are gonna talk about in this thread.

because it's pretty hard to think of some damn good non-fantasy/comic book action films lately. only the raid 1/2 and fast franchise come to mind. edge of tomorrow was cool too

The Good, The Bad, The Weird.

It's like The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly with the spirit of classic pulp adventure movies and incredible camerawork. And a bit of John Woo.

Guardians of the Galaxy is the best movie since The Godfather Part II. So of course it would be the best action movie since 2000.

Drug War by Johnnie To is really good Chinese film. I need to think about this a little bit more.

A Bittersweet Life is the best Korean action flick. Watch that movie.

Also Sleepless Night which is underrated. Pretty much a French Die Hard in tone.

And Jason Statham's Safe that most people dismissed as just another Statham vehicle. Really intense, cleverly shot, on location action scenes.

The Raid 2.

I only saw it once, but I still think about it... The first one is great too.

Off the top of my head some other great action flicks:
Casino Royale
Captain America 2
FAST FIVE
Skyfall
KILL BILL both volumes, but mostly volume 1

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
The first Raid movie and Dredd are almost like the exact same film when you think about it.

No. One is a movie and the other is a fight comp.

I agree with those that say the first Bourne movie (but not the sequels) and Taken.

Hot Fuzz is my favorite movie mentioned so far but I'm not sure if that counts exactly... I love it though.

Well true.

But you got to admit that the premises for both movies are almost incidental to each other. There were scenes in the Raid Redemption that gave me feelings of deja vu. I enjoyed both though.

Yeah it's a comedy, but they did take the action sequences seriously in Hot Fuzz.

13 Assassins
that's gotta be the best pick out of Japan for the time period, unless...
and if anime counts Redline.
A Bittersweet Life is the best Korean action flick. Watch that movie.
so many strong choices out of Korea. I can't really argue with this as the best though. That finale is an all time classic.
Apocalypto
rather unheralded for how dang good it is. Good pick, might count for best underrated action film of the period.

I'd throw some points towards Universal Soldier: Regeneration, which I think is only marginally more successful then its much more ambitious sequel, Day of Reckoning. Both are 'Holy-Amazing-Shit' levels of achievement in the action genre though.

Hello mysterious person with uncommonly good taste. Thumbs up.

Thanks. You the real MVP though

naaa. the movie was cool but went on waaaay too long.

I'll excuse some pacing issues while watching one of the most insane practical stunt chase scenes in recent memory.

Since everyone's mentioning Hot Fuzz, I'd like to add The World's End which was even better shot with choreography from Brad Allen (from the Jackie Chan Stunt Team)

Elite Squad
and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. Very gritty action crime-thrillers focusing on the BOPE police unit in Rio de Janeiro. Anyone who liked the vibe of Max Payne 3's Sao Paulo sections should get on these ASAP.

And if we're throwing out anime, Sword of The Stranger has perhaps the best sword fight I've ever seen. Not as relentless as some of these other picks, but it ends with a bang.
