Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

OMFG i just tried Assetto Corsa with the DK" and wow, absolutely wow.
My favourite track is Spa and i have never experienced it like i have tonight, stunning, absolutely amazing.

Fair dues to the devs for doing a fantastic job on optomizing the VR experience, i mean looking around is just like looking around in real life, no lag, no judder, not nothing, just amazing, just being there, wow

First time post for me on gaf, be gentle lol.

I'm thinking of getting rift to play racing sim games like Assetto Corsa, but I'm not sure whether my GPU can run AC at 75fps. What's your PC spec?

I feel like it's not reaching 75fps no matter what I do, though I can't tell for sure as I can't figure out a way to track fps while using the rift with AC (perhaps if I duplicate the rift screen...).

I've set it to be the main monitor in extended mode and selected the 74hz option, set framelimit to 75 and I still get judder. With no AI and really low settings.

4770K @ 4.4 and 780ti

Grid Autosport doesn't give me judder.

I'm using the latest runtime, perhaps that's why.

So I did tons more messing around with my Rift today. Man even though I'm running the least demanding demos, this thing is unfuckingbelievable. From Ashes, even with its primitive graphics was just a joy to sit and watch. I had a good laugh staring down the various wild animals that cross your path. I'm really looking forward to bringing it to a friend's house tomorrow who has a much more capable PC and trying some of the higher end demos.

The few demos where I've been able to reach that holy grail of 75 fps and low persistence blows my mind, The way the image stays perfectly clear no matter how much I move my head around is near indistinguishable from what it's like to look around in real life.

I still haven't been able to get Direct Mode working though at all. I did discover that when the Rift is in extend display mode, if I open the direct to rift version of a demo, it does work and usually way better than the regular version of the demo. Is this what people are doing when they say they've been able to run demos in direct mode? If I switch the display mode under the configuration utility to direct mode I never get a signal to the rift. Every demo just freezes on the desktop, even the built in desk demo scene. I know direct mode is kinda screwy right now, but does anyone have any idea why this may be happening?

Hey guys, I just hooked my DK2 back up after 2 months of inactivity and installed the latest runtime beta.

Haven't used it because of the incompatibility between the Rift and GSYNC. That just got sorted in the latest Nvidia drivers, so I'm ready to jump back into VR.

What are the best new experiences that I missed out on?

EDIT: Just tried Senza Peso. GOD DAMN, what an incredible visual feast. And MUCH smoother performance than any demo I tried back at DK2 launch. Hope other demos have gotten similar performance boosts with all the new updates.

im running an old i7 920@3.6Ghz, but my gpu is a 780Ti, game isint that demanding though, whats your gpu? even without the rift the FFB from a wheel in AC is fantastic unlike ahem *cough* Project Cars *cough*, so maybe you could try and and see what your fps are without a rift first?

Thats very weird, is it track specific? i mean last night when i played Spa it was one of the smoothest experiences yet in the rift. I used the latest runtime and the newest Nvidia drivers. I didnt set any framelimit, just selected 1920x1080x74Hz in game and had the rift as my primary monitor( switching the rift on and off when in menus which changes the primary back to my main screen ). I used all default settings in AC as it couldnt import my old settings.

I'm kind of curious about the new SDK but I think I'll wait for feedback on the Elite Beta 3 first, since it will release next week. Who knows if it will run the same, better, worse or not at all!

Oculus were quite honest and have said that this is not necessarily the SDK update that a lot of people were hoping for and wont have fixed many issues and may even cause some others. Still a lot of work to do it seems.

So don't get your hopes up thinking that this will be any sort of game-changer.

This is great. It arrived yesterday and have been playing with it so much.

Today I worked a bit on some 3D model of a spaceship I wanna do after I finish my current project. Usually when building the ship it doesn't really feel that impressive, but after bringing it to UE4 and walking around it, the sense of scale was incredible.

I wonder if it would be easy to pack the whole thing and just bring these assets so other people can check it out. It's only walking around, but I like how it feels :P

Hmm I only tested a few tracks...but it feels like something is up to keep it at 60 which makes it judder slightly when moving.

I deleted my config file and tweaked things down a bit and gave spa a go and it's very smooth during the race now, thanks!

Also cars with darker visors are really nice with the rift as it hides the pixel edges somewhat.

Been shaking my head around testing for judder...need a break ha.

not sure if it will help but i have Aero disabled permanently due to the issues it was causing with judder.

I'm thinking about selling my DK1 and maybe get a DK2/CV1 down the line? So far i've really, really enjoyed it, but it's come to the point where the low resolution really destroys the immersion for most games/demos.
Sell now, to atleast get some profit. Or safe as a museum piece lol. What do you guys think.

A brief glance at eBay suggests that the DK1 is holding its value well, so you can probably sell it and buy a DK2 without much/any outlay. CV1 may not arrive until this time next year (although it really could go either way, arrive sooner or later by many months, I have no idea), and it's possible that you can then sell on the DK2 to buy the CV1 in a similar way. DK1 might be a nice thing to keep though, and will probably become quite valuable in a few decades if you have all the bits in good condition.

Yeah that's what i was thinking as well, it's pretty special to actually own one of these..

I need someone to talk me through like a 5 year old on how to use 2nd monitor extended mode with DK2 with games that don't just boot directly into the rift and you have to drag the window to the 2nd screen.

Like with Euro Truck simulator 2 I just spent 20 mins trying to drag it to the 2nd screen and had no luck, super frustrating. In full screen on Window 1 (not Rift) you can't "grab" the window to drag it unless there's some MAGIC WAY TO TELL A PROGRAM TO CHANGE TO THE EXTENDED SCREEN?

So I put it on windowed and then it's a pain to grab it since whenever the mouse is within the program area it gets stuck in the game and can't reach the actual game window to drag it. So I have to make it smaller resolution, smaller box so I can grab and drag it to screen 2, but then when I try to change it back to 1080p or fullscreen it goes back to screen 1.

I feel like I'm getting in frustrating spots here on common sense stuff because other people have used multiple monitors and extend mode before in their life. I've never needed a 2nd monitor and so the rift is my first time ever using an OS in extended mode and I don't know how to use it to run programs full screen on monitor 2 (extended monitor / DK2).

I put the Rift as primary monitor and then use the Windows key + shift + right to send steam to my normal monitor and then when I boot Euro Truck in full screen it goes straight into the rift. I hope that makes sense!

Yep, that's how I do it as well.

My current setup is this (bolded means main monitor)

[Monitor 1] [Monitor 2]

When I press the power button on the Oculus Rift, it automatically changes to

[Rift] [Monitor 2]

I leave the desktop blank without anything and all the programs run on Monitor 2, but when I press play for anything they automatically go into the main monitor, which in this case is the Rift. Also Monitor 1 goes off automatically when the Rift goes on so that way I have less things my PC has to process.

I will check later to see if it changes anything if I leave everything on. The only annoying thing is having the Rift as the main monitor... changing windows is a pain in the ass, if there was a way to move that task bar to the secondary monitor while leaving everything else to the Rift...

Edit: Found this... didn't know!: http://superuser.com/questions/62034/is-there-a-way-to-move-the-taskbar-to-another-monitor

Thanks, finally got it working. Didn't know you had to opt into the Rift beta under properties as well. Man, that's actually a really cool experience with DK2.

Sadly a bit underwhelmed with my DK2. This is my first experience with any Oculus device, and I simply can't believe more effort wasn't put into making it comfortable to wear with glasses.

Silly me thinking I wouldn't need my glasses since the screens are literally within inches of my eyes, but that proved wrong. I can't try anything for more than a few minutes without it becoming extremely uncomfortable. Shame too, since when it hits right it really is a neat experience. Still not very sharp though, and I can't imagine what the DK1s were like.

It can't be stressed enough that the DK2 is still prototype hardware, hence the name "Development Kit". It's not the final product intended for consumers who expect a comfortable experience.
You should have waited for CV1.

Did you try setting it to the maximum distance (space) so you can fit your glasses in?

Perhaps some temporary contact lenses?

Lunar Flight DK2 beta available now

Thanks to the 0.4.3 SDK Lunar Flight finally has a playable DK2 build!
Here are some things you need to know...
You need to Opt into the Steam Beta (dk2)
Direct To Rift mode not tested, run it in extended!
Not built with DX11 (yet)
Don't play with the Graphics Settings it might crash
Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Shovsoft\Lunar Flight from your registry before starting to make sure it has the preconfigured settings
There are no Dynamic Cockpit Shadows! :(
There is no Black Smear Correction
There is a nice new Asteroid Field intro scene where you can set your Orientation
Press O or Left Stick Button + Right Stick Button (X360) to reset orientation at anytime
Press F5 to show your Frame Rate
Map 2 has the best performance
It uses a 1.1 Texture Scale for a little Super Sampling
If you're having performance problems try Holding Alt after starting the game to access the launcher window and select one of the lower quality settings.
I hope to get some time to look at the build some more in the future but this build is pretty good for now!

Oddly enough this is the first time I've even considered contact lenses. I do have the distance at max, and even tried the shorter lenses (although that isn't ideal with glasses).

Might look into some contacts simply for the Rift, because when everything aligns right it's really neat.

Just got my dk2, the pixel density is too low (I really think 4k is a must). My pc is too slow old for this(260 gtx), can't play more than 1-2 minutes ugh.

Vanguard v is cool tough...

Watched an interesting YouTube video recently (can't find the link, sorry) about a bunch of people making a sort of holodeck using the Oculus Rift in a big room with lots of tracking cameras around it. What was cool is that the size of the room to a certain extent wasn't as restrictive as it sounds as they were subtly rotating the virtual world when the player turns so they think they've done a 180 when in reality their body has only turned 90 degrees (or vice versa). Essentially, they can make sure you never walk into a wall by having the game make you walk in circles without realising.

Yeah.., People who buys these things shouldn't underestimate how important it is to have a fairly powerful rig to output rock solid 75fps at all times.. Quality AA is also a must in VR, and makes it possible to even stomach 1080p (at least until 1440p+ CV1) in combination with "good VR software" like f.ex. Elite Dangerous and Assetto Corsa.

Is your rift set to EXTENDED in the OC util settings..?

I'm having a hard time getting anything besides the test demo scene working correctly.

Is there a setup to follow or something? It seems a shit ton of people are having problems with the DK2 not displaying correctly or at all.

Is anyone else having problems with the display not showing up, and the HMD is still working * you can see the world rotating around and what not on your monitor but no display inside the HMD *

edit:

Well i can't believe it, but that worked.. i've been searching for a few days now. Thanks :)

will spread this to the dev forums and what not, bunch of desperate frustrated people.

Use VR Game Manager by Bilago!

I had a lot of problems running in extended mode at first too but I don't really have a choice since I can't get even the desk demo scene working in direct mode. Eventually I found a process that worked pretty well, but nothing beats using the VR game manager. This thing makes using the DK2 soooo much easier and user friendly.

Its super easy to use. Just click the add button and find the .exe file of the demo you want to add. Now all you have to do is check the Force Adapter checkbox and select Make Rift Primary. If you have your Rift setup as an extended second monitor (make sure it's on the left and your main desktop monitor on the right), when you click Launch Game, it will automatically make your Rift the main monitor and run the demo there. Then when you exit the demo it will switch back to your regular screen as your main monitor. That's as close to your "magic way" as it gets haha.

have you noticed any difference in Unity vs UE4 demo's?

Thanks man, going to try. Although setting the Dk2 to monitor 1 is working currently. It would be neat to see if this will reduce any jutter. Monitors are all 75hz but theres still some jutter in UE4 demos.

Sorry man, I'm not the guy to ask. I'm still saving to buy my gaming PC so I'm running on a really weak imac at the moment and can barely run any demos above 30 fps lol.

EDIT: After some messing around it looks like for the "Make Rift Primary" option to work consistently, the DK2 or Monitor 2 needs to be on the left with your main display on the right under your computers graphics settings. For some reason if it's the other way around sometimes the demo will still open on the main monitor.

It's finally in my hands!!! So what tips and suggestions can you all recommend me with for optimal playing experience. I already have a few Steam games downloaded but no tech demos.

It has shipped!

And I don't have a graphics card to play anything with... it will sit there and mock me in its box. Well I'm not letting it mock me, I will damn well sit down and put it on my head and will use the power of imagination.

Are there any pointers on avoiding the nausia and motion sickness when playing Alien:Isolation? I get it quite often when I am turning around with the joystick instead of turning my head. If the Oculus had a swivel device on the helmet, I could use my swivel chair to turn around and it won't be so disorienting.

I am having the same issues but my problem comes more from not being able to recalibrate the camera. Is there a button for this?

I think that's just something inherent to first-person, controller-driven games. I get sick just walking around Tuscany. But I can play Euro Truck or Elite for hours.

Indeed. Was discussed a while back in this thread - using a speedy mouse look to 'flick' your view rapidly when turning gives many people less nausea than a joystick turn, which is too smooth. Windlands' 'Comfort Mode' is a good solution to this for joystick use, rapidly switching your view - I think it works rather well. I was able to play it for about an hour without feeling sick.

After using my rift for a few hours, I have a couple of questions.

1. While having my glasses on and using the A lenses, I still notice that some games or certain part of the games are blurry for me. It's not a motion blur problem, its a vision problem. Is there a way to focus the A lenses or should I use the B lenses?

2. In some tech demos, I have noticed it will lock itself at 60FPS while others will natively go to 75FPS, is there a way I can have the FPS counter on to see and is there a way to fix this? Some of the games are Don't Let Go, SightLine, and Windlands.

3. Some tech demos just won't work or will always load on my main monitor and not on my rift. For example, Titans of Space (will always load on my main monitor), Zelda Lost Woods (will always crash), and Architecturals (will always crash), and some others. Any tips to get them to work? I have tried the open on rift context command and the same problems still occur.

Other than those issues, i'm having a blast with the DK2. I know understand everyone's input on this device and see the potential this device has. I can't wait till it finally ready for retail.

I use RivaTuner/Afterburner to check the FPS if I have to.

Make your rift the primary monitor. This will ensure games run at 75fps and it makes most games launch directly to the rift screen. It'll also help with any judder. For games that are crashing, I've found using Bilago's VR Game Manager and forcing graphics to D3D11 works most of the time. You can also use it to force the adapter to make rift primary too for anything still not launching on the rift screen.

Wow, that is seriously impressive work for what I assume is an amateur mod.

The retrofit of the original game UI onto a virtual computer at a desk is such a cool idea, and adding the mirror of the actual desktop on a second monitor is a great touch. I love that it is creative and practical.

I watched Zero Point yesterday and ergh. It was extremly short, the footage was of highly variable quality (in terms of stitching and degrees) and often the sense of scale was completly off. But all in all it was worth watching for the two or three scenes that totally did it for me, I've been trying to touch something in VR for the first time after a while lol

I'd get it from Russialand for 5 bucks if you want it now or wait for a sale, I think 13 are quite a bit too much for what you get.
