Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Any news concerning positional tracking judder? In Asetto Corsa when I dial down the graphics a lot it helps only a tiny bit. It almost seems as if the positional tracking is "fighting" the AI cars for CPU power so-to-speak.

Edit: I'm crossing my fingers for a judder fix in the new sdk coming this week..

Taking my Oculus Rift DK2 on the road (for the third time) to let people try it out tomorrow. While I'll be browsing Oculus Share and such as well, I wanted to ask you all about any particularly awesome or unique demos you think would be good to showcase. I am mainly looking for things that have come out in the past 30 days or so. I was generally on top of things until I started playing through Alien: Isolation with the Rift. Now I am way behind on what's come out.

My rift won't be arriving til later this week, but this is the new stuff I've downloaded from the past 30 days because they look cool: From Ashes, A Night At The Roculus, The RPG Room, Ethereon, The Mental Torment Episode 1, Guided Meditation, new CrystalRift Alpha, Close Encounters.

Fingers crossed: really hopping for a better dirrect mode and less judder. Seems devs will have to heavilly rework their programs though, so guess my rift will continue to collect dust for another good couple of weeks (I knew what I was getting into, but right now the required twicking is not up to the results...gotta fix that runtime and sdk, oculus)

I'm in the same boat. However Time Rifters released yesterday so I'll give that a shot this week. Sorta liked the demo. If somebody in here wants to split a 4 pack, let me know.

On another sidenote I was wondering why the IR camera was turned on when I launched Paranautical Activity. Turns out it has DK2 support lol. Was kinda confused on what to do and couldn't find a reset button so I gave up -- but it was a nice surprise lol

Also I wish Project Cars would offer another alpha/beta signup or buy-in now that the game has been delayed but eh =\

My rift is arriving today!
Looks like it'll be better waiting for the new SDK before starting work on my game. How long does it usually take for the new SDK to be integrated into UE4?

Oh man oh man OH MAN!!! Just got the e-mail that my rift has shipped! Sadly, according to the tracker I will have it on Monday. Wish I would get it before this weekend. :(

Fuck me, due for tomorrow! I'm in the UK too. My order still says processing but I got a UPS notification email...I didn't order anything else to my address. yeah yeah- it says HAWK FREIGHT O/B OCULUS VR
Virtual Reality tomorrow! Awwww shit. It comes with the right cables right :P

Thanks Seanspeed, was a tiny bit cheeky of me but I'm glad they were nice enough to reverse it quickly.

For the newcomers do not Hesitate to try VR game manager. It is very useful to manage all the demo and meanwhile tweak the launch settings.

For those who struggle to launch demos in direct mode, be careful to chose the direct to rift.exe and try to force dx11. Maybe i'm lucky but i manage to launch 90% of the demos un direct mode like this.

Just nearly had a full being there moment at last.

Playing elite tutorial where I fight a bigger ship,my cockpit was smoking from damage and for a moment I was actually "THERE".

Been with the rift since DK1 but with elite and my new GTX 970 it's getting very close to me feeling some sort of presence.

It is. I paid lots of money. Do you know how I could get my monitor to run at 75hz or at least lock my games at 75fps?
Your monitor? Did you mean the DK2? I assume you're talking about a 60Hz laptop display and a 75Hz DK2. When you run DK2 in 'direct' or 'extend' mode, your laptop will remain 60Hz, and the DK2 will get 75Hz. There are bugs with the headset that sometimes confuse this in games when in extend mode - resulting in the DK2 only getting 60Hz. This is usually resolved by making the DK2 the primary display.

As for locking your games to 75fps, this happens automatically if you're at 75Hz with v-sync on, which is the default for most DK2 demos. If v-sync is off, you'll have an unlocked framerate, which is usually fine too. Some prefer to run with v-sync off and add a 75fps limiter, this can be done with Nvidia Inspector (if your laptop has Nvidia hardware) and 'radeonpro' with AMD... I think. What's your laptop spec?

Serious question: is there a way to help me overcome motion sickness while using Rift? I really want to enjoy Alien and Assetto Corsa in VR, but every time I think I'm prepared to play them I can't last more than 10 minutes.

Alien (and any first-person game where you walk around) is going to be tough if you are sensitive to motion sickness. I'd give up on things like Alien and try to get comfortable with seated experiences first. Seated cockpit games should be more comfortable, like Assetto Corsa. If you're feeling motion sickness in AC, it could be because you're not getting 75fps, your IPD is incorrect, or there is some other calibration or performance problem. If this isn't the case, and it looks completely smooth and believable, then it's possible that you are simply very sensitive to motion sickness and DK2 is still not a high enough spec to be comfortable for you. I can only suggest you take it slowly and try to increase your play time beyond 10 minutes every day.

when the heck is this thing hitting retail?

AMD Radeon 7970m (2GB)
16 GIGS RAM
Intel i7 3.2ghz

Last night I made my rift the primary and set it to extend. Cyberspace said it was locked at 60 fps. Was that just the game or my monitor causing it?

I'm not sure, Cyberspace runs at 75Hz on 'extend' mode using the directtorift.exe here - no setting to primary required.

Has it always come with two pairs of lenses? I just noticed the FAQ was updated on August and the contents say "2 pairs of vision lenses". No mention of it on the actual Oculus Content page however, just curious......ugh just trying to make the days go by quicker to be honest haha

here is the support page:

https://support.oculus.com/hc/en-us/articles/201835987
DK1 had three. DK2 has two - one pair (for normal vision) is already attached, and a pair for short-sightedness comes in the box.

I uninstalled Oculus Runtime.

When I went to reinstall, it was nearly complete but the display driver install wouldn't continue. It says 0 seconds remaining.

Solved

I'm going to give Assetta another go as I'm hoping they fixed the no 3D thing by now.

Trackmania 2 I have a quick spin. I'm not sure if there is an in car view (or if I'd want to use it) but you'll definitely want to turn off motion blur if you try it in VR. Other than that it worked great, and I love that there's a keyboard shortcut to switch it from your monitor, to rift mode on the rift mode. It's similar to how HL2 does it. Nice and neat.

The Rift works with Trackmania 2? Interesting.....

I didn't realize it had real support either, but it's awesome. Very intense in first person!

I think that's another game I'll be playing in VR exclusively from here on out.

I'm on a laptop.

Unity World Demo was running at 75fps in extended mode.

Intel tells me the Oculus Display was running at 75fps

If my monitor only goes to 60hz is it possible for the 75fps footage to be displayed on the oculus display running at 75hz?

If the demo is running Direct-to-Rift, then it's ignoring your other monitor entirely, so it's easy to have it running at its own framerate. But, only a very small handful of demos actually run DTR, the rest of them require Extended Desktop, which usually forces the framerates of the two monitors to match. That's why people (myself included) are overclocking our monitors to 75Hz, otherwise the Rift locks itself to 60Hz.

Thanks! I don't think performance issue is my case since I've got 290 and both games run smooth and almost no judder except caused by position tracking. Seems like a daily VR training should be planned :)

Are you on a laptop?

Can you overclock a laptop monitor?

If not am I screwed until more functoning direct to rift games come out?

I was hugely concerned about VR sickness after reading that so many people have had problems with it. Over 1 week has passed since I received the rift and I have been using it constantly, thankfully I have not had any type of sickness or uneasiness while using the headset.

Assetto Corsa is absolutely fantastic in the rift, I really need to get a wheel though.

I have issues with motion sickness from bad FOV in games that don't let you change it and have it set and stupid values. But I haven't had any issues with DK2, pretty impressed.

That said the near sighted lenses did not work for me :( I guess my eyes are just too crap. I'll have to get some contact lenses ordered because it is slightly blurry even with glasses on for me since my lenses are quite curved. Mother nature hates me.

So my DK2 is finally arriving tomorrow! Bad news is I may have had to put my plans on building a gaming PC on hold for a bit. Until then all I have is my iMac which is running Windows 7 in bootcamp. It's a mid 2010 model so I just want to know what are the absolute least graphic intensive demos I can try out with this thing until I can build my higher end machine.

I don't care if the graphics are flat, untextured polygons. Just something that will run smoothly on a system as old and weak as mine.

An HD 5750? I imagine it'll run the included desk demo ok. You could download the Live For Speed demo and see what kind framerate you get on the monitor. If it's above about 120fps at 1080p, it should be fine too.

I believe From Ashes is not really demanding and is very impressive, the desk demo itself is very impressive to get an idea how well it works when implemented properly.
