Fighting Games Weekly | Oct 27-Nov 2 | A Lot Of Shit Went Down

I'd rather get a metal stick shell. I believe there is a site called panzer fightstick that does good metal shells. I think the metal is like auto grade or something so it's pretty legit

James Chen wrote a preview article on the capcom cup

http://www.ultrachentv.com/2014/10/28/the-capcom-cup-2014-preview/

What's of note is that James calculated the possible matchups if everyone is seeded through point totals

01) Luffy –VS– 16) Dreamhack Qualifier (Probably Smug or Pepedie)
02) Bonchan –VS– 15) Nishikin
03) Xian –VS– 14) Valmaster
04) Snake Eyez –VS– 13) Momochi
05) Prodigal Son –VS– 12) NuckleDu
06) Justin Wong –VS– 11) Daigo
07) Infiltration –VS– 10) ChuChu
08) PR Balrog –VS– 09) Ricky Ortiz

I want whoever wins DH to have at least 1 point so Luffy would have to face Nishikin the first round. I want to see him deal with a bad match up where Rose's fireball zoning is useless lol. But if points do determine seeding then if the person who wins DH already has a lot of points(like Smug) then it could really shake up the 1st round match ups.

Right now Pepeday to me is the face of the FGC in terms of making the most of things. It warms my heart to see him all happy and enjoying himself considering where he's from the competition isn't as good plus he's a family man who doesn't get to travel much. We need more people like that.

Marvel has a big announcement tomorrow?

It's a Marvel movie studios announcement. They have reserved a special announcement for it. Seems pretty weird to do all of that just for a new movie announcement unless they are announcing a bunch of of Marvel movies.

Oh and Spider Man incoming.

Pretty insane to have watched Aris's twitch channel go from having 150 people watching him play Souls games on a good day to having 500 people watching him play Tekken on a normal day.

Weren't they doing a bunch of shit to pressure Sony into giving the rights back to Marvel? That would be crazy if they got Spider Man.

Half of the people know him as an Indian pop artist.

I don't think they can get Spider Man back but they probably struck a deal with Sony to let Spider Man appear in Avengers/Civil War in order to invigorate the character/franchise.

This is all pure speculation of course.

Sister randomly asked me about the Dead or Alive series, since its button mashy friendly style meant she could play it competently back in the day on the original Xbox. She asked me if that franchise was still a thing, and I told her there were actually releasing a new version this Spring on PS4/Xbone.

Got me thinking about the DoA franchise as a thing that exists. Its ultimately pretty shallow, its rock-paper-scissors style never gonna be the cornerstone of EVO or anything, but I see the appeal. Its like a hyper caffeinated version of Virtua Fighter. Its flashy, its slick, you can immediately press buttons and look cool. Lot of attention paid to the character models, lot of great animations and little sweat/dirt details. Other 3D games you do a little ring out and they kinda trip out or whatever, DoA you knocking people off European castles on to rooftops and following them down or hammering them into electric fences. Big on spectacle, environment interaction. There's like 200 fuckin' costumes for all your pretty girls. There's ninjas and Bruce Lee and Dennis Rodman. Haven't played it since like 2004 but not gonna lie I might sneak in some scrubby Hayabusa play in that free-2-play thing come February.

How do FGW regulars feel about Dead or Alive? Do you play it, like it, hate it, just like the breasts? What do you think of the free-2-play implementation?

I actually quite like the series but never actually play it :T

Dead or Alive's gameplay is great, feels really tight for a 3D game.

The counter system can get a bit spammy, but it's fine. DoA3 was my favorite and I've always played Christie in all the games. The F2P is a nice first attempt, but it's basically a demo that is able to play with game purchasers.

Good F2P implementation and lots of improvement in DOA5 that makes it a better fighting game than its predecessors.

It still needs a DOA6 to be completely legit though. It has some problems like countering being too good and a ton of moves being very negative in general. The game definitely has a lot of mind games involved in it and as you said it's very flashy.

Ultimately though the real problem with DOA is that it has the stigma of being a 3D waifu fighter. Yeah it has some guys but most of them are generic nobodies except Ryu Hayabusa because he has his own franchise. With the success that DOA has had with their costumes that won't go away any time soon.

It NEEDS to happen.

Here's just a random pretty good video of the latest version of DoA I found. Pretty ladies, strikes-throws-counter system, environment interactions, flashy moves, pretty accessible. I look at it and think, "Yeah, I'd pay $3.99 or whatever to play Ryu Hayabusa online for a month, I think"

I think you're right tho, its probably got the biggest waifu attach ratio in the game. They clearly cultivated an audience with that; who knows how much money they made through costume DLC alone. But I think it looks like a slick, fast-paced 3D fighter, all things considered. Could be fun for a minute *shrugs*

The two fighting games I grew up playing was Smash 64 and Dead or Alive 3. My friend had gotten both an N64 and OG Xbox and man did we play DOA3 like crack. It was fun as hell and obviously some of the scenes got us interested being prepubescent boys at the time. The story never made sense but the combat was so tight and clean, you felt like you were smashing somebody's face in when going for a punish or combo. I played Ryu Hayubusa, complete badass, and my friend played Jann Lee. Good times were had and I'm really tempted picking up the new DOA but the whole fanservice thing might make me stray away... Also Ayane being Bass' daughter was a complete mindblowing moment for us when we saw it in the story, or at least that's how I remember it.

You and your friend jerked it in the same room to DOA didn't you?

Grew up playing DOA?

Fine. Page me Cobalt!

Slide method is pretty easy. As weird as it sounds it's like throwing a frisbee to me, like the way your hand is going from one direction to the other. I might make a gif just like I made a gif for Mes on how to do Ultras.

Actually, I think DOA has a better set of core concepts and elements in its combat system than most other games. In fact, it has the very same set of principles as VF, even the RPS system though it uses one element that's different to make the triangle. The problem DOA has, IMO, is that it has tons of little things that are counterproductive to using that system properly. Things like tons of simple things, most things aren't negative enough to discourage using them repeatedly, movement being super easy and mobile, etc. If they tweaked it to be a bit harsher and used a frame schema akin to something like VF but with its own twist, it could be a pretty interesting game.

DOA has hella satisfying throws which is why I've always enjoyed it but it's always just been easy to go nuts in it.

DOA actually didn't have that stigma until DOAX Volleyball. A lot of people played DOA3 consistently but when Volleyball came out many people didn't look at the series the same way.

I think it was some compilation disk that they put in kiosks or something with a whole bunch of games

I probably got it in a magazine or something

I just remember playing the demo so much and never buying the full game
