PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | October 2014

So how many of the Vita games you played this year would make it to your top 10 GotY list?

Not much, but honestly I didn't end up finishing most games I've played this year. Rogue Legacy is definitely in my top five though and I love Danganronpa as well. I also played Monster Monpiece, but while I loved the gameplay I thought it was dragged down by the dull story and unnecessary fanservice.

I still need to finish
Danganronpa 2
Demon Gaze and Akiba's Trip, but I doubt I'll get them done by the end of the year. Then there's the games I haven't played yet like Neptunia Re;Birth1.

Don't you have to fill in your CC info? I know that if you want to use the PS+ trial in Europe, you have to fill in your CC info to activate the trial :/.

Also, the PS+ trial only works for PSN users who never tried/paid for PS+ :/(Just saying because I don't know if you were a PS+ member :/).

Nope! But I don't know if I want to add my CC info..can I take it off when done?

Monpiece should have had a more card-game-esque story, something more in line with Pokemon TGC, Custom Robo Arena, Battle Network. Trying to make it into super generic JRPG was pointless.

Core game is great though, been playing it again on the PS TV

I think the story would have been more bearable if there was less of it. Conversation would just drag on longer than they should have.

Also, why do none of the opponents have eyes? They're really creepy to look at.

Well later on they have glowing red dots where there eyes should be. That's less creepy. Right.

It's kinda sad, Neptunia shows they know how to do a humor game, the story would have been much better if played for humor. Closest thing to humor in the story is some deliberately, self-awarely lame "generic enemy" lines. But it doesn't excuse all the non-self-aware lame generic enemy lines

Fortunately you can just skip all story parts and treat it as an excuse to fight NPCs, which is all it really is anyway.

It's a bit weird how some of the commonly appraised vita-gaf games this year (Toukiden, Demon Gaze, SAO) were all so lukewarmly reviewed (high sixties, low seventies metacritic).

To be fair, I can understand the scores for Toukiden and SAO, since both games really only click with some time put into them and if you are into the genre and setting. And even then, there are some rather big negatives that can hinder your enjoyment.

Demon Gaze on the other hand is an all around solid dungeon crawler with some nice gameplay systems and it stays fun and fresh all the way to the end. Should have easily reviewed better, but well, dungeon crawling is pretty niche, the difficult beginning might sour reviewers with less time/patience and the miniscule amount of ecchi in the game got way overblown to the point that it negatively impacted its image.

Yes.

But I wouldn't recommend using your CC for PSN/Sony(don't trust Sony's security after the PSN outage in the past :/). But if you really want to use the PS+ trial, then you have no other option ;P.

Also(if you activate the trial), don't forget to disable the automatic renewal. After the trial is activated, automatic renewal for PS+ will be also activated :/.

Edit: I don't know if SCEJ has changed it today. But in the past, you could activate the PS+ trial without using your CC. SCEE and SCEA have still a lot to learn from SCEJ :/.

Battle Islands Launches Today on PS4
Hi. My name is Rory Jackson. I’m the Studio Head at DR Studios in the UK, the developers of the free-to-play strategy combat game Battle Islands, which is launching on PS4 today! Battle Islands is set in the South Pacific in 1942. A platoon of soldiers land on a tropical island and your task is to defeat enemy forces, build a garrison to defend your island, and go out guns blazing to attack other islands with the huge array of air, sea and land forces you have at your disposal — tanks, jeeps, gunboats, and fighter planes to name but a few!

We’re absolutely delighted to bring our game to PS4 today — it’s a major achievement for us, and the culmination of a huge amount of work and effort from everyone here. Battle Islands started life as a game on mobile devices, where it’s been really popular. However, it’s really important to stress it isn’t simply a mobile game, as our PS4 launch clearly shows.

We’ve rebuilt it from ground up to make sure it’s up to scratch for a next gen console like the PS4. We’ve built brand new, higher-resolution assets that we believe look stunning, and built a completely new user interface that really capitalizes on DualShock 4.

Vita/handheld review tax...

That, but also the fact that these types of time-intensive games aren't reviewer-friendly, at all. Fantasy Life is the current victim on the 3DS side.

If your game does not have a hype apparatus behind it that reviewers can suck up to, you're basically out of luck.

Ironically from the impressions I've heard here from importers, the further into the game you get the less satisfying it seems to become.

So Fantasy Life is good? I read the OT the other day and was kinda on the fence as to whether it was my kind of game or not. I'm a sucker for anything with a broad set of classes though...

Freedom Wars, you know I was very active in the Fantasy Life thread and loved it :p

That's why I asked, haha. :p

Yeah, I'm still on the fence about Freedom Wars. Like I mentioned in the OT, the fact that we could maybe see an expanded version (à la Kiwami, Delta, etc.) down the line is probably the most off-putting thing, haha. But also the fact that I'd barely have time to play it.

Yeah there'll probably be an expanded version somewhere down the line since it seemed to sell pretty well in Japan despite the negative reviews. I'm a sucker for hunting games though so I always end up buying both iterations lol.

Can you enjoy Fantasy Life playing alone, without going online?

Not to derail this further, but yeah, you can finish it and do everything there is to do on your own. Don't get me wrong, though, co-op is ridiculously fun. It's good for taking on the more difficult areas/bosses. One of the many aspects the game shares with MMOs/hunting games. We're happy to answer any questions/put doubts to rest in the OT btw.

The problem with SK is they have just been releasing way way too many games and people will and are getting burned out.

It sure got roaring fast. ANother reason I think I'll stick to only "versus" releases. Just played Versus 1, cooking game sounds meh, would probably be burnt out if I tried to play everything all in order. Especially since they're not especially short games.

Any additional Vita titles now supported on PSTV after the firmware upgrade?

I don't think it's necessarily a firmware thing. PBBG is supported on PSTV even without a firmware or title update

Well, on the other hand, firmware updates might make such games compatible for good without requiring an internet connection to check the whitelist. I'm not sure exactly how that works, though.

So I've been playing SRW Z3 lately with a bunch of ffx in between.

In srw I got to stage 21 where there's like a bazillion serpents in the north where Angelo and Gyunei with some goons are below. As if that wasn't enough all my mechs got reduced hp because of story reasons.

- is it worth it to do the secret where you kill 10 serpents with hilde and noin?

I just don't think I can do it easily while going for the sr point at the same time.

C'mooooooooon EDF2017 Vita sale. This is the week, I can feel it!

This won't be the week, will it? :( I knew I should have bought it when it was $10 even though I didn't have a Vita yet.

Best I can tell there's an explicit whitelist in the system's database and "refresh live area" checks with Sony's servers to see if a game is "allowed" to play. Same with cart games--Shinovi Versus requires no patch for PS TV, but it does require a Live Area refresh to fire off.

No idea if firmware updates have the ability to add to the whitelist or how that works. I hope it'd be in the patch notes if they made any changes though. Adding compatibility seems to be...pretty silent. I got no notification that PBBG worked, and 5PB International didn't even brag about it, it just started working.

Well, I've heard several times that launching games that were post-release deemed "compatible" was hit-or-miss, sometime requiring connecting to the internet again. (In other words, sometimes those games would claim incompatibility even after they had worked before.) I would hope that firmware updates would update the internal compatibility list permanently, or something.

Yeah I did notice that SK Versus started giving me the error again...I wasn't sure if I had done something to trigger a DB rebuild or what (I did try swapping cards with my vita just to confirm it worked). Hopefully as issues are ironed out it's not quite such an online-required device. It also asks me to log in quite often, I guess because I use it AND my Vita, never had a PS device ask me to log in upon launching games before

Million Destroyer, the Vita Idea Factory Not-Disgaea game made by former NIS peeps has unsurprisingly been delayed to 2015.
I'm glad it's still alive, the lack of news was worrying.
The details make it sound like a new ZHP and i like it :)

Only some games of this year? How about all Vita games since the release of Vita?
When people will understand that for most of the reviews what really counts is

A bit surprised that FW doesn't have the usual 10% first-party digital discount. Oh well, it's still a good price.

Considering you guys got it a lot cheaper than Japan as is, Id say 30 is beyond fair. Even to the point of being too cheap really.

Im sorry but if you own a Vita and look at reviews... you're doing it ALL wrong.

No one reviewed Soul Sacrifice Delta and those who did said its just dlc added to original game. That is so wrong, I dont know where to start about that.

Edit: wrong thread. Wtf

what are you even doing in this thread
baekshi pls

No MH clone is ever going to get positive review scores from western publications. The genre itself is so very tied to how Japanese people have integrated video games into their lifestyle that it doesn't import well to western interests. So very few people outside of Asia have even realized that ad-hoc local multiplayer on handheld consoles is a thing, while these games are literally designed around it.

Damn, I was about to pull the trigger on games on PSN for the promotion, but I guess its too late now. :(

No it's not, today is the last day.

I'm holding off on freedom wars. Hoping people enjoy it so that there might be further balance patches. I kind of want to play the PVP but if it's unbalanced that's probably going to be pretty underwhelming.
