Oh man I've been waiting a long time for footage of this film. Day one for me.

Gotta say though...Rourke's face looks totally fucked up. I wonder why did he ever go through plastic surgery...

thats not how it worked. Rourke was on it, dropped out, they went to Cage who worked on it for a bit and then told them to give it back to Rourke.
 
God, that trailer was so awesome.

Seeing the ROH and CZW rings along with wrestlers like Necro Butcher and even Ron The Truth Killings was just surreal.

Day fucking 1.
 
Saw the trailer earlier today and I can't believe how doubtful I was about it. Rourke (being the monster that he is) looks like he's nailing this role and hopefully quite a bit of praise. So far, the movie seems like it's in the same vein as Rocky Balboa, which is ok with me. Plus, it'll have a nekkid Marisa Tomei in it. So even if the movie somehow doesn't live up to my expectations, I'll still have that. :D

I hate having to drive to San Francisco every time I want to see a limited release, throw a brother a bone in San Jose assholes.
 
Got back from a screening tonight. It's pretty good. It's a sad tale but at least
he will die doing what he loves to do.
Mickey Rourke was great. Tomei was hot even though
all the strip club scenes were disenchanting but it's not as harsh or extreme as "ass-to-ass."
 
Just saw it today - it wasn't as good as I was expecting based off the rave reviews that have been popping up.

It's not a bad movie, per se, but just ok.

I felt that the writing was a bit flat at points and besides Rourke's character, everyone else was incredibly two dimensional and didn't seem to do much of anything to the story.

It was frustrating that the movie just kept screaming the message
LIFE SUCKS! EVERYONE IS STUCK IN THEIR ROLES FOR GOOD OR BAD!

I didn't need a
sappy Hollywood ending where they all got along and everything was grand, but I thought the story threads just ended in an awkward "But nothing happened and that's the point" kind of manner.

Anyone else that's seen it, did you become acutely aware of Rourke's breathing in the movie? Me and my gf after seeing it, both commented on the fact that we felt half the movie was just listening to him breathe and grunt.

Good movie, just not great. I'm a huge huge huge wrestling fan btw.
 
Great flick. One of the better films of the year. Rourke deserves the best actor Oscar. It's weird to think that The Wrestler will be followed up with Robocop.

I wouldn't be so sure.
In his recent interview with the AVClub he said that the script for Robocop still wasn't even hammered out. He also mentioned that he has a LOT of films he wants to make. It came away with the impression that another quickie may surface before Robocop could happen.

I hope the Robocop remake falls apart. Part of me is curious as to how he would handle the material. The original Robocop is such a unique film in terms of its tone and era that I think it would be worthless to remake it.

Everyone in the wrestling threads needs to see The Wrestler. What other holiday movie this year stars Ernest "The Cat" Miller?

Pretty sure Aronofsky's supposed to be following up The Wrestler with The Fighter.

Agreed. I saw it in Vienna a couple of months ago and I can't wait to see it again in the states.
 
Just came from it. Sorry everybody, don't believe the hype.
I'm seriously sad/ annoyed at how completely mediocre it was.
We've seen this same movie a hundred times.
And Mickey Rourke did the best he could with the story, but even his performance is all hype.
And I've been a big wrestling fan for ages too.

I hope nobody reads this tripe and actually believes it. Rourke was stunningly good in the film, and the fact that it has such a limited release means a lot of people are and will completely miss it, which makes it the opposite of "all hype". The talk surrounding his performance is being driven by the performance itself, not its popularity. If Penn doesn't win the Oscar, it'll be Rourke.
 
Saw it this afternoon and liked it a lot. Maybe not worth the current 98% RT score, but still very, very good. It was gritty and visceral, and the production was raw... a lot different and more stripped-down than Aronofsky's past stuff.

The only thing I didn't love was
the daughter — she seemed a little bit... old to be as angsty as she was (I never want to see you again, you're nothing to me, blah blah). I mean, she wasn't in high school, you know? It just felt forced and really predictable.

Also, Mickey Rourke was really great. I was kind of surprised at all of the "best performance of the year" claims by reviewers, but I absolutely felt for his character — the role was extremely authentic. I need to see some more films from this year to really be able to comment on it, though.

And I was a big wrestling fan when I was younger, so I appreciated the authenticity contained in the film, like the nods to industry terms/slang and such.

None of this is true. And I hate everything.

Of course Evan Rachel Wood sucked. She was in Thirteen!
 
Saw the film tonight. Quite simply one of the most powerful films of the year. I knew Aronofsky wouldn't disappoint in the least bit. Still don't have my list finallized but this is top 2-3 stuff.
 
The fountain is one of my favorite movies of all time, but i do realize it is an acquired taste type of film. Really cant wait to see this movie, but i look back and see that all his movies are sooooo damn depressing. When I was younger I loved requiem, but now it affects me alot mroe and dont seem to enjoy watching it anymore. I hope this movie isnt purely depressing th whole time.
 
Powerful, enlightening, emotional film. It has a heavy touch of Rocky Balboa in it, but this is a better film (not that Rocky was bad). The Wrestler is one of the best movies I've seen this year and contains one of the best acting performances as well.
 
Saw it last night. Great flick. Mickey Rourke's best role. I had no idea Marisa Tomei was that fucking hot OMFG! I could barely keep my dick in my pants during her dance scenes :lol

I'm really quite glad for Mickey Roarke. Years ago I admired the work he did in films like Angelheart, Johnny Handsome, and Year of the Dragon. He was gone for a good, long while but he came back to nail it in Sin City. Can't wait to see this movie.
 
Great, great, but pretty depressing film. Seeing Rourke like that....eeeesh.
I thought the end could have been edited a tad differently. I don't mind the open-endedness, but it was just such a stark cut.

They just left it open at the end and there is no payoff. It was actually like watching a wrestling match, but missing the pin so you don't know who wins. All they had to say was if he lived or died...

Director mentioned that he has removed the most disturbing scene from the Movie. When Mickey heard about that cut, he didint talk to him for 2 weeks. :)

Unfortunatley, that scene will not be in DVD version. :(

Aronofsky teased Professor Brown's NYU Movies 101 class Wednesday night when he told them that there is a cut scene in which Rourke has a complete breakdown in his bathroom. He said that it was one of the greatest filmed acting performances ever (!), and it was so disturbing, he felt the film would be weighed down as a result. When asked if the scene will be included on the DVD, Aronofsky replied, “No. No one except me and Mickey will ever have this scene on DVD. When Mickey learned that the scene was cut, he didn’t talk to me for two weeks.” Dudes, we need to see that scene someday.

I thought the ending was appropriate.
Mickey Rourke diving to his death made his character epic.
 
How do you know he died? His heart seemed to be hurting, but there was no indication that he died at the end. It was hurting when he ran through the forest too, but he lived through it. I could assume he lived also. That is why I didn't like the ending. The open endedness of it gave no payoff to the movie viewer...It is just like the Sopranos ending

It's obvious. Randy knew his heart was going to give way and decided to continue to wrestle anyway because he was beyond caring if anyone gave a shit about him anymore.

I agree. I think this is what happened. The Ram went out in a Blaze of Glory. No need to show it.
 
I got around to seeing this last night and really enjoyed it, although it had it's flaws. I really liked the understated direction and simple approach Aronofsky took here and thought largely worked.

Rourke is getting a lot of acclaim for his performance and rightly so. Even though some may say Randy the Ram isn't too far off some of the circumstances and situations that's dogged his career he still elevates it from being a pure pity party. I was also surprised how violent and graphic some of the images were, it certainly had me cringing at times.

The biggest problem I had with the film was both the female roles with Tomei and Wood either feel undercooked or in the case with the latter simply fall flat on it's face. While Rourke gets the bulk of screen time as we follow the character through the minutiae of his activities the same attention isn't given to the rest of the cast and in the end I had problems
believing the motivations and actions Tomei's character made near the end, trying to reconcile and get together with Randy

Still despite a very simplistic story, a forgettable performance by Evan Rachel Wood (Who for the record was brilliant in Down in the Valley) I appreciated how the film didn't pull any punches and was pretty satisfied.

EXCELLENT film, Mickey Rourke was great.

I didn't get that from the movie. I think it meant to say that some people are, which isn't exactly untrue.


Great movie. It's weird and funny seeing comedians I like in Oscar worthy films. Last year it was Paul F. Tompkins in There Will Be Blood, and this year it's Todd Barry in this.

Have you not seen Before the Devil Knows You're Dead? it seems like the only good parts she gets lately involve her taking her top off.
 
This movie was a tad dissapointing for me. I really like Aronofsky's films, and this is the first one I've seen where things felt amiss. Rourke did an excellent job, sure, but nobody else did, and the theme of the movie, while good, is not particularly something I'd think Aronofsky would even care to tackle (when, frankly, Stalone tackled it not too long ago, and with more support from the cast).

I'd be surprised if Rourke isn't recognized for his work here, because his work is the only thing that kept this movie watchable for me. It's a little dissapointing to see Aronofsky moving in this direction as a filmmaker -- and with Robocop around the corner I don't know if it'll get any better :\

Again, it's not that The Wrestler is a terrible movie -- it's fine. Rourke is amazing. Aronofsky remains a talented filmmaker; I just think the whole package wasn't right for anyone, with perhaps the exception of Rourke.

It's still Aronofsky's worst movie to date :\
