Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

Is this really it? Is this all gaming will ever amount to? Death-match, CTF, domination in small arena based maps, round end. Rinse repeat.

I want something new. Something that captivates me. Something that builds progression outside of arbitrary level upping.

Was hoping for something revolutionary, instead we got another rehash.

Go play another game then. The industry is far too large to be upset at a lack of unique experiences.

The character design not being coherent doesn't bug me much.

Since they are basically super heroes, so designs being all over the place and having a wide range of inspirations is kinda what I expect out of it.

Though I can see why it would turn some people off, especially compared to say TF2.

Doors are open LET'S DO THIS!

Reposting from a couple of pages back but this was my first game ever and I was playing Mercy.

I find it hilarious you were the only support role, and the only non-offense in general besides the other team's Bastion.

EDIT: Someone please play Zenyatta and give impressions.

I just watched the trailers and holy shit I can't wait to play this. It looks so fun, love the art style.

Yeah, Blizzard games pretty much always have amazing art style and this is no exception. Looks really, really good and it feels like it'll still look good in 10 years, similar to TF2 or WoW. Gameplay-wise it looks quite cool as well. Definitely different enough from TF2 to get me interested.

Played it at BlizzCon and really excited for its beta and launch, but definitely needs some tuning I feel.

But the world... man, I thought they nailed the world. There really hasn't been a game that's captured the feel of being a Super Hero adequately imo. Sure, there are games that try to capture being Batman or Spiderman or someone specific, but very few games elevate the player to "Super Hero" status. Metzen or Kaplan even said in response to the Titan question that they ultimately wanted to make a game about heroes, and thus Overwatch. Watching the trailer the first time at BlizzCon, I thought it was cool but needed more. But when I got home and watched it again (after playing), I got chills at the line "the world could use a few more heroes."

Anyways, so from a narrative, art, and creative standpoint, I really like the world, and it makes me want Overwatch to be successful and for this 4th IP to grow into more games than just the FPS it is today.

The game is interesting. It's extremely approachable - my wife (who's really not a gamer) picked it up and went 5-8 on her second round. They have a great "remind me" system built into the game so you can learn your own abilities very fast. Changing heroes between rounds is a lot of fun, but also was an extremely interesting decision on Blizzard's part.

Certain heroes are much easier to understand than others, but that makes it feel like those heroes have much larger advantages for skillful play. Widowmaker (Sniper), while fun, is just cake for a good Tracer or Reaper.

Dedicated healing is going to be a contentious design point. It absolutely ruins 1v1 battles when one of you can have an orb that's powering up another 400 health over the course of the fight. Ultimates are fun, but some ultimates are way more badass than others. Hanzo's Dragons kinda shit all over Torbjorn's avatar stance.

The last round I played was on the desert map, which doesn't have a payload (just 2 capture points), and it was weird to go from 5 amazingly fun rounds to something that felt so miserable. Three players (myself on Torbjorn, a Mercy/Medic, and Bastion) held the 2nd control point way too easily. The other three were terrible and new to FPS games and little more than distractions. But we three fended off a team of six, multiple times, without even trying. Bastion was in turret form just out in the open, getting healed by Mercy, and if anyone tried to run around him, my level 3 turret would almost insta-kill them.

The "play of the game" thing at the end of the match is really interesting, and damn, I saw some amazing plays. I was on Reaper and in a gun fight with Hanzo. We were both really low, I ducked behind a wall to reload and grab a health pack. Hanzo killed me with his bouncing arrow. I thought it was awesome. I also totally had the Tracer moment of teleport in, attach sticky bomb to turret, recall out, and damn did it feel badass. For what it's worth, every round had the same flow: attackers captured point 1, but never got point 2.

Oh, and Reaper's reload animation is one of the most badass animations in videogames imo.

TL;DR - Very approachable. Love the world/IP/creative/art style. Great moments of feeling like a badass for players of all skill levels. Skillful play is rewarded on certain heroes. Support/Healing roles might be OP for defense and could have deeper fundamental design issues. THE GAME IS AWESOME even if it has a few small issues.

Also, /nerding out - I got to shake Jeff Kaplan's hand as he was leaving the panel and tell him congratz ^_^ - I hope the Blizzard team feels proud of their work, because the game is awesome.

yeah theres definitely unannounced characters or maybe they will be DLC, ninja robot guy cowboy and a fat guy with a gass mask and nades ... or maybe they just didn't make the cut? idk

Oh hay, since it looks cartoony, is FPS, and Blizzard is loving D3 on console do you think this is coming to the consoles?

I personally have no interest in buying(?) it there as I don't subscribe to the pay to play online services.

Edit: Probably, yeah most likely. Anything that can play Blizzard games should probably expect them these days. (The guy playing Hearthstone in that future pad was awesome)

Another fan asked if Overwatch could come to consoles some day. Kaplan said, "That sounds awesome; that sounds really, really cool," explaining that PC is the only platform that Overwatch is 100 percent confirmed to appear on. "We would love to see Overwatch played on whatever it could be played on," he added.

Chris Metzen said there are many many more characters to come.

I wanna know about the samurai looking dude!

But tbh, I'm kind of disappointed, I expected more from Blizzard :( I always play all their games, sc2, HS, diablo and around 300 days + on WoW. I feel this isn't something Blizz would do well but who knows! I'll give it a shot once its out.

Remember when Blizzard revealed they are working on an MMO? everyone was like WTF? Blizz was always a RTS company, this game will be shit yadda yadda... and now look at World of Warcraft, it became the biggest phenomenon in videogame history.

I have faith in Blizzard.

i see at least 4 new guys in that picture, short dude in yellow bio-suit white robot lady black guy with dreads and giant red robot, so thats what 19 total so far? (not counting the guys you can hardly see in the background)

its going to be nuts in MP being only 6v6 where everyone has their own class

You must be new to Blizzard game.

That is true! I guess I'm so used to their fantasy style games, seeing this just put me off. But I know I will definitely play it, they always put their games on mac and thats pretty much the why I always get a chance to play these games.

I won't lie, I like that it looks very mobile. Seeing that Archer moving around :O Hope we get news on the samurai, getting a lot of Raiden vibes from him.

and more here:

dude with two swords in the background for example. Counting chars now makes no sense. Hell there could be 50 heroes in the final game, who knows...

Man, I really hope pricing doesn't ruin this. I'd hope to do everything and play as everyone seen in gameplay footage without paying more than the price of a "normal" game.

Gotta wonder what kind of pricing nightmare TF2 would have been if it launched in 2014 as a F2P title and didn't start as a retail product that didn't go F2P until it already had a massive base.

I find it a bit strange that they decided to not have character customisation options. It isn't confirmed as a F2P game is it? So if it is, how do they plan on making money?

i hope they dont get crazy problems with big rosters is there's always balance issues, just like any fighting game people only use to top tier characters and if you have to pay to unlock them you can count on people only buying the best ones

This looks kind of cool. I always wanted to try out TF2 but kind of never got around to actually doing it. Thanks to this announcement I'll make sure to do that and hopefully I'll get a beta invite to this game next year.

Well in the Q&A session yesterday one guy asked about skins and i can't remember the exact answer but they are definitely looking into it. I do think there will be some sort of customisation in the game but hopefully just cosmetic.

Rumors are the game will have a similiar model like League of Legends. The game is F2P but some chars cost money but they haven't said anything about the business model yet.

Yeah with such a big roster it will be interesting to see how they manage the balance. The good thing is they have a lot of experience balancing classes with WoW, so i'm pretty optimistic.

remember when they had a hugely successful rts and they flushed it down the toilet with the worst balancing ever and a complete lack of attention to anything competitive around them and even one of the worst video game stories ever written

remember when they let the biggest thing since sliced bread leave their nest with no fight whatsoever and they now make an incredibly shitty me too moba with no redeeming qualities

remember when they delivered diablo 3 with the shittiest drops and a blatant money grab in a market and didnt fix it for like a year

yeah i have no faith in blizzard from the last 5 years

So I've heard this game feels MOBA-like, what makes people say that?

Probably because characters have Ults and other abilities. Beyond that though there isn't much MOBA like in it. No leveling up during a match, no creeps, no towers, no items to outfit your character with.

I feel like the business model is going to make or break this game for me.

Ideally, they'd go the Valve route of paying for cosmetics with all the classes being free to play, OR perhaps the classic "buy this video game for $60" (which seems to be going out of style for multiplayer focused games.) Unfortunately, if Heroes of the Storm is any indication, they could very well follow in the footsteps of a LoL-style model which is one of the worst, IMO.

Free Dota is a steam trojan horse. It's not a model that every company should or can follow.

I hope they wont stick to LoL business model.

I prefer TF2/Dota2 model or let me pay to play.

I have got into HotS and have already quit because of their business model.

How is League's model worse than having to pay $60?
