Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

it sounds like each character is pretty simple and easy to learn, witch is good for helping balance all the classes i just really worried about the f2p model and having to pay to unlock characters.... maybe if they did it like SFxT where you buy packs and get 5 classes at a time otherwise people are only going to pay to unlock the top tier characters and its going to get old really fast 6v6 where you have 8 tracers and 4 pharah

Hummmm I don't think matches will be featuring clones IE people playing the same character/hero in a match, well atleast not in competitive gamemodes. That's just my hunch anyway.

Not sure how I feel about about people being able to use more than one of the same character.

Feels like you could get people just picking nothing but offensive characters.

I think that could happen anyway cause there are gonna be more than just the initial 12 characters that they've so far introduced.

A draft mode could be interesting though once enough characters are in the game.

You'd think that would be the case...
Then suddenly you're in a team full of snipers and spies (Or in this case..Widowmakers and Hanzos..since Reaper is more offensive)

They said you were meant to be able to change characters when ever you want. You don't just stick with the one you choose at the onset.

Nice Title + Header image combo Kotaku :D

Is this just PC?

So far, yes.

Right. I'm just saying that there will be enough characters that even if you were stuck with 1 per team, you could still have a team of mostly or all offensive oriented characters.

I hope multiples of the same character will have different colours and not just red names above their heads or something. They did mention the importance of readability for the designs so I'm hopeful. Would definitely love to beta test this.

Everyone's gonna play tracer.

Who doesn't want to blink around at the speed of sound?

in TF2 you never really had a problem with everyone playing the same class because at some point everyone wants to win so if your team has no medics someone will go medic same with engineer ect... but if you have to pay to unlock each class that is where you will have a major issue

they could do like a wow group finder where a match wont start till you have a good balance of classes and if you role a support character you get matches faster

I just got done watching all character videos showcasing their special abilities.

I'm so hyped for this game.

They are definitely going to balance the game, but damn, Hanzo's Dragonstrike combined with Sonic Arrow seems like a doozy. I wonder what the counter is going to be.

I've had pretty good luck with getting into Blizzard's Alphas/Betas, keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

This looks so good! I hope it comes out for us console peasants.

It's weird to me to think that people who can only afford consoles think of themselves as peasants (ironically or not). Buying a console and having a decent display is serious money these days.

PC gaming is like the microtransactions of hardware. Buy a bit here a bit there and you can remain competitive. Spend a fortunes and you can have better shit than everyone else but it won't make that much difference.

Anyone who can afford a console should consider getting a PC these days.

I have both and I prefer to play it on console.

I hate this "peasant" term. It gives a elitism image that is quite disgusting. But I think he was being sarcastic about the term, idk.

Yet, this game sure seems quite good. I dont like to play on PC except for some very specific games (like Diablo). I will for sure try this one! Also, it doesnt seems like it will require powerfull machines to run it decently, so I think Im good to go with my GTX 570. :)

Edit: Watching it again, seems like it will be fun to play with every single character. Seems so good!

Will it be free to play model?

I thought the majority of the female characters were a marked improvement over Blizzard's typical chain mail bikini style.

I don't get the chainmail bikini thing from blizzard.

I'm sure you can find examples of female characters that don't wear much clothing, mainly a couple of the elves and dragon aspects, but by and large the female character dress in roughly equivalent ways as to male characters of the same type.

As someone who has mainly plate female plate wearers in WOW, you basically never see any skin, much less 'chainmail bikini' level of skin.

I've played a lot of Mage and priest also, and the female mage and priest gear shows no skin at all either.

I don't like any blizzard games besides Warcraft 2/3, but this games looks awesome. Made a Battlenet account and signed up for beta, though I doubt I'll get in with 0 games and a newly made account..

That image/article combo is too good. And probably still true, given how terrible Blizzard's female design have actually been in that respect.

Stuff like this really makes me think that people just assume all fantasy games must do the same things, because aside from the few outliers like Alexstrasza, Sylvanas and Valeera Sanguinar, this is really not the case.

Sure some of the female mages and rogues have expose midriffs here and there, and there is a relative lack of tanky female NPCs, but the whole 'chainmail bikini' isn't really a thing, certainly not for player characters unless you deliberately transmog into that look.

Unless people are taking the hyped up fan art and cosplay as indicative of blizzards actual design intent.

You realize this isn't the first class based shooter to be made where you can do that right?

It's making healing and support focused classes MANDATORY that is the problem. Limiting picks to one person per character is such a great way to turn off a lot of people. Want to main a character? Lol fuck you too bad game says you can't. Play a support instead!

Course this wouldn't be such an issue if the roster right out the gate wasn't so big and most likely going to get bigger. Hard to focus in on the design of all of them, more likely to have a few that might be useless or borderline mandatory.

Agreed. I hope Blizzard goes the route of League/DOTA and just keeps adding classes over time. Cosmetics killed TF2 for me.

Just signed up for the beta, btw. This looks amazing.
youve already put more effort into writing this post than it takes to not see cosmetics in tf2

I don't really want that because it will make their game generic.
The thing I like about BLizzard beside the cool gameplay is the lore of each characters/races.
It makes them unique and you care even for some villain like Illidan.
I want them to find a way to make us like those new characters beside just being bots/skins we play.

Why does her butt become bigger when her goggles come on? I am guess for a better base for a steadier shot.
Wtf I didn't even notice this

That's how people twerk in the future.

As for cosmetics, I hope they go the Dota 2 route. Have a base model that you can put many different things on so you can mix and match. I always thought League's palette swaps were too jarring.

In that lineup character art that shows the cowboy character, his best says BAMF.

Instant main as soon as he launches along with hammer dude.
