Sonic Boom Street Date (and fans' hearts) Broken

"We experimented with different colors and surface features on the characters, such as fur or scales, and quickly Sonic Team came back with their discomfort of that. They were great guardrails for us to understand when we were deviating too far from the character. Without their input, the character would have been a lot more alien and different from what Sonic is known for." Discomfort may be putting things mildly, particularly in the case of Takashi Iizuka, the current head of Sega's Sonic Team in Japan. As Rafei recalled, "Early on, when we had our first review of all the crazy things we wanted to try, Iizuka-san came down to Los Angeles and looked through all the different concepts."

"I felt sorry for the guy because sometimes he couldn't actually look at the screen--it was too traumatic seeing all the crazy stuff we wanted to do. Over the course of that meeting, when we were coming up with new ideas, we had a very sincere--just two adults talking--conversation about why a character should or should not wear pants, and that was a very surreal moment in my life and my career," Rafei continued. "But it helped us understand the rules of clothing in this universe. Any small adjustment went a very long way, so we had to be very careful."

You know when Takashi Iizuka is the voice of reason things are fucked up. Sega probably just eventually said "Fuck it! It can't be worse than Sonic 06." I'm curious to see how batshit their original ideas were.

All that work on character design and they still didn't figure out that putting Sonic's mouth on the middle of his face is one of the dumbest things you can do with the character, aesthetically.

Id still rather play this than dragon age, destiny, cod, assassins creed etc.

It's funny seeing you manchilds pick apart a game that's not even aimed at you

There's a demo on the eShop.

Spoiler alert:
it's ass

It's funny, because when you start, the demo is pretty solid...a little clunky, but hey, it's a decent 2D sidescroller...

Then you check the time and, hey, I've been in this stage for ELEVEN MINUTES! Then you realize you're warping around in circles looking for countless collectibles.

Too alien you say? How about giving them shorter legs and arms and de-roiding knuckles.

It seems the poor framerate and lack of lighting and shadows are mostly exclusive to co-op from what I'm hearing.

There's still no excuse for how poorly everything else is. This is Sonic '06 levels of bad. The transitions from gameplay to cutscene are frequent and jarring. The game switches characters on you when you least expect it. There's already at lest two instances of "falling through floor glitches".The hub world is huge and confusing. There's even a turtle you gives you a plot spoiler by asking you
to go back in time to help his crops or some shit.
before that part of the story comes into play.

I'm still looking forward to it, but for the same sadistic reason I go back to Sonic '06. To laugh at how bad it is.

Like, yeah, it's not terrible or broken, but it's just so damn dull.

I got my pre-ordered copy in the mail today for some reason. I am not sure why! Maybe Futureshop mailed it early because Tuesday is a postal holiday?

Anyhow, I can confirm that there are absolutely framerate problems even in single player. The game opens with an autorun section, and it was crazy choppy. The subsequent 3D section chugged pretty hard, too, although not as bad.

Once I got to the four longer 2D sections inside the temple, the framerate was pretty stable, and it was also all right in the subsequent canyon area. (Which is pretty simplistic looking.) But the game seemed to really struggle whenever it had to render an autorun segment or one of the more open, lush tropical environments.

Also, I encountered a bug where a cutscene was accompanied by extremely loud, blaring static. I pressed a button to try and make it stop, which caused it to skip the cutscene entirely (without any kind of prompt). It became apparent afterwards that this was the cutscene that introduced the new villain and the premise of the story. So now in addition to being kind of disappointed I also have no idea what's going on.

I died at tails turning around towards the screen. XD

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Knuckles culture (I'm an expert), but long legs and stupidity are huge parts of it.

Yes! Finally I can color Sonic's arms blue again!!

JESUS! GAF COME ON!

GIVE ME SOME POSITIVITY ON THIS DAMN YOU!

I want this game to be good. I just want to play a good Sonic game? WHY WONT YOU LET ME HAVE THAT!?!?!?!?

This is unbelievable. Not in a this-is-really-crappy-and-everyone-should-be-ashamed way, but that I simply can't believe professional developers would allow something so boneheaded to happen. 3D platformers have existed for two decades now. This is really basic stuff.

For some reason, this thread really makes me want to give in and finally pick up Lost World...

Do it. Ignore the stuff you've read online and especially in this thread and go in with an open mind. I loved it. Criminally underrated.

I think this is more of a QA issue. You can always bypass collision detection if you find the right spot for it.

It's funny seeing you manchilds pick apart a game that's not even aimed at you

The fact that, in the same post, you would rather play this than those games, refer to people as manchildren and then admit it's not even aimed at adaults is the best.

In any case, a game aimed at a younger demographic doesn't have to be poorly designed. It can still be simple or introduce new skills progressively, and be well designed. This is a big problem, "kids are stupid, let's just make whatever since they'll want it anyway" rather than "let's make a good game, that can be enjoyed by children, their parents and anyone else who happens upon it." The latter of which is much harder, but, hey, might as well make colourful games that are crap because that's better than making generally well recieved games that don't use primary colours in their character design.

You just called it crap. Kid playing it will most likely see it as good. That's my point. You, as an adult gamer deciding what kids find enjoyable. Smh......

All you had to do was to take Generations and make lots of new content for it Sega
Why you keep doing this
Yes I know it's not Sega this time but holy shit didn't they remove 06 from 360 store because it was "damaging the brand"?

I mean... Knack was better. Think on that.

Kids most lilkely will see it as good, but that doesn't affact the point I'm making which is that "kids are stupid, let's just make whatever since they'll want it anyway" is a rather cynical way to approach game development.

A game aimed at kids doesn't need to be unfun for their parents.

Just wanted to add that Sonic Lost World is worth playing if you need a Sonic game and don't want to play Sonic Boom. Either the Wii U or 3DS version of Lost World is fun.

Also the 3DS version of Sonic Boom is pretty good. I think we need to change the thread title to reflect the Wii U version.

so this is the second game in the Nintendo/Sega deal for Sonic and they have 1 more unrevealed to go, right ?

No, Mario & Sonic is the third one. Sonic is free now.

Edit: beaten. Also: Nintendo has probably paid for Sonic Boom being an exclusive. I just can't.

okay maybe this game will be sonic '06 quality in areas

At least it looks nicer? That game at points literally has Dreamcast-era looking environments, only with better draw distances. That being said the music was nicer in that game so maybe it balances out?

... Still feel like Boom's not going to be 'worst game of the generation' bad like '06 was though.

Giving me those Sonic Adventure vibes oh yeah!

And yeah, I will be on the look out for what Sonic Team is doing next for the main line series, but, Sega really should consider just getting Nintendo to make a Sonic game and go from there.
