Valkyria Chronicles for PC [Nov 11, £14/20/$20, has all DLC, 60fps/1080p+, $14 GMG]

I'll put some code in GeDoSaTo which will crash your game if you sharpen Valkyria. Seriously.

(It does get "sharper" -- or rather more detailed -- when you downsample though)

Normally I always is bicubic sharper in photoshop to resize my hudless captures down to 1080p. but in this case I used just bicubic. Fits better.

I'd tell you if I knew, probably tomorrow.

When you say "sharpen", do you mean smoothing out the jaggies?

I can sort of understand, because sharpening in some older 3D games sometimes leads to some strange, cheap looking art assets.

Why not ? We have port begging for PC versions of basically everything.

Disregarding whatever the hell anyone in this forum does, I'm asking people not to post console port begging in a PC discussion thread. Not hard.

No, I mean sharpening. Reducing aliasing (jaggies) is never a bad thing.

Sharpening is a post-processing filter where you usually run a 9 or 25 point stencil on the image which increases the apparent local contrast of edges. It can be good in moderation in a photo-realistic game after a blurring post-process AA, but people tend to overuse it.

It's saying "approximately 1 day and 1 hour" here.
Holy crap, does this mean I have to put up the OT in an hour?

Between RE4, Dark Souls 2, and now VC, this year was great just for all the Durante approved hype behind these games.

Thanks for making what should be ho-hum PC port threads so exciting.

Looks like it unlocks at 10AM PST, which is a standard release time on Steam.

(25 hours, oh god oh god how am I so hype for a game I've played partway through already)

The original game on PS3 used pre-renders, right? Got some boyos on some boards to correct who have a conspiracy theory that Sega pre-rendered the cutscenes for the PC release.

according to miladsn in this thread, yes the PS3 version has pre-rendered FMV.

Yes, despite looking like it's in-engine, all those gorgeous cutscenes were actually FMV, similar to FFXIII. The only in-engine stuff seems to have been the talking heads.

The FMVs are actually the only really worrying part visually - I'll be curious to see how well they translate to high PC resolutions.

Oh, Durante, one question: 16:10 yes? I keep seeing these 16:9 resolutions bandied about and welp.

if {Seanspeed} + f(Luma)
then bluescreen.exe
Hehe.

Durante, Mr. options nazi all the sudden! lol

I'm gonna start the game normally and then mess with some things. Maybe see what you've got up your sleeve. It wont bother me too much if the soft look remains. Its not exactly a screenshot sort of game anyways.

Someone needs to take a screenshot of Valkyria being on top of DayZ (it's what I'm seeing now at the store). Who would've thought, right?

So, how much time left until it unlocks? 24 hours starting from now?

I sure hope it's getting higher by tomorrow.

Don't know if I'll buy this.

I mean, this is one of my fave games of all time, but I still have the PS3 version and I think it runs great and looks great. Plus, I played it about a year ago. Maybe I'll watch a stream or two when it comes out and see if it's really THAT much better on PC. Cause man, this is an amazing game no doubt.

So it comes with all DLC...is the DLC good and substantial?

"Valkyria Chronicles will have better reviews on Steam than Final Fantasy XIII".

This sentence in 2009 would be weird in so many levels.

Welcome to the future. It is as glorious as I envisioned it would be.

The DLCs are incredibly meaty, especially the Selvaria one. The Selvaria one is halfway to being an expansion pack, not "DLC". It's at least 3-4 hours all by itself (and given that it's fairly challenging and simply has a fair amount of plot, I think 5+ is more realistic), and then the shorter Edy Detachment DLC is still a couple hours too. It's really meaty, good DLC.

Yes. Yeeeees. Every purchase of VC on PC is another wake up slap in Sega's face to remind them people still give a shit about VC.

So is the English dub good?

Yes both audio tracks, English and Japanese, are very well done. Just choose which ever one you prefer. You can also switch the language at any time if you want to hear what the other sounds like.

Japanese Selvaria and Max are the best.

Anyone mind giving me a spoiler free synopsis of the game? The one on Steam isn't doing much on selling me story wise. I read somewhere about the game being emotional and something to do with concentration camps. Im thinking about getting the game but I want to know more about the story.

It's good. It's a simple story, but charming and effective. Not too complicated, which I appreciate. It's weird, as it mixes serious military themes with weird Japanese anime/sci-fi stuff, but I find it works. Never gets too over the top or anything.

Get the game though- it's a masterpiece. It really is. There's nothing that plays like it at all, and the systems are incredibly robust.

Cool thanks. Well fuck, maybe I will buy this then. I imagine the colors will really pop on PC. Such a damn good game. I really envy those that haven't played it before- such a masterpiece.

Think I will go with the English dub, I like when I can look away just for a moment and not miss something they said cause I didn't read the subtitle.

It's WW2 in anime form basically. The plot is not complicated, mainly just people drawn into a large war because of a greedy invading enemy. The concentration camp thing is that there's a race of people that are treated like second class citizens because of some stuff they supposedly did in ancient times. That being said it's not nearly as graphic as the real life atrocities it deals with.

There's more to it than that, it has some fantasy elements that play out largely toward the end of the game, but the basic plot is actually pretty simple.

Just think of it this way: the game is slightly more expensive than the DLC by itself on PSN, you get a much improved version that won't be locked to a single system, and it supports the Sega PC port campaign.

Win win win :)

No idea, I haven't even tried it. But probably not -- I'll try later.

Fie. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just 16:9 and I can deal with a little letterboxing, but still.

Also the English dub is just fine except for one song they struggle a bit with, which is a shame. Also Selvaria is "better" in Japanese if you understand the language, but Sayaka Ohara is not the easiest act to follow up on.

But the dub is just fine and really great in a lot of places, including the ones that matter. The huge majority of users will be just fine with it.

Yeah good point. I usually don't buy stuff just to 'support' it if I don't plan on playing it, but I do want more Japanese games on PC (Dragon Age, Vanquish) so I guess I should buy this.

It's a war story in a setup similar to WWII (including some racial stuff, running over neutral countries ect), but with fictional countries.

The emotional part comes from stuff that happens during a war. People die, villages and cities burn, ordinary people getting drafted into a miltia and becoming battle hardened ect.

It's not only tragic though. There's quite a lot of cheery/lighthearted and corny moments.

The story won't blow your mind but i liked the setting quite a bit.

That being said, the main reason for getting this game is that it's a good and also a unique Strategy RPG.

Sold 15 dollars worth of trading cards on Steam and put in the last 3 dollars myself. Preloaded and ready to go. Might watch a couple videos to get hyped.

Congrats to all who entered the giveaway, and to Dr.Acula for winning it.

I think the world-building's more important here than the plot. Not that I dislike the plot, but the sense of community in Gallia and history behind these events is more developed, probably to help the chances of sequel games (which have certainly happened!).

Tip for those who haven't played before:

Don't be afraid to replay completed missions to level up. Grinding is effective in this game. And best of all- it's fun! I had a blast replaying one mission dozens of times over the course of the game and improving my rating on it.

Here's the thing. When something is against the rules, people breaking the rules does not make it okay to break the rules. It means they're breaking the rules.

What I'm saying is that you should be reporting the people port begging to PC, not thinking that people port begging to PC makes it okay to port beg period.

I know, right? What's next, the Tales series?

You never know. At the rate things are going, I wouldn't be surprised! Like I said, some of the stuff we got this year and the last had basically no chance in hell to ever get ported to PC. Yet it did. So, abiding to GAF's motto: believe!

Just saw some of the art of Valkyria Chronicles 2 and the contrast with 1 is notorious. I mean, we go from long dresses and fully suited up people to high school miniskirts? In 1930s/40s? I know it's a fictional setting and all but, hey, Gosick managed to maintain some (slight) consistency at least...

Ah, well, they can bring that too of course, I don't mind :P
